TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From the desk of Father Ronald A. Potts:

In our first reading from the Prophet Isaiah, we see the generosity of God’s love and mercy. The Israelites are in Exile for having abandoned God and His covenant but He has not abandoned them. They must seek Him, “while he is near,” before they stray even farther away from Him. He will set them back on track because He is “generous and forgiving.” The Lord proclaims, “so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” God has a plan that is clear and is not disturbed in its unfolding and always leads to His appointed goal. When God asks of us to let go of our ways and thoughts, He does not ask for blind trust but for wisdom—to see things as He sees them. Here is our faith, the sure foundation of our hope, to follow the Lord and not go astray by going our own way.

In St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians, we must remember he is in prison at this time and his trial is underway. He knows that the death sentence is a possibility and this explains his mixed feelings. “I long to depart this life and be with Christ, . . .Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit.” He entrusts himself to God’s grace in completing the will of the Father. St. Paul speaks to all of us, “Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.” He calls us to live our lives according to the gospel of Jesus Christ and not the way of the world. This line reveals to us how the Word of God burns within his own heart. The gospel consumes him and leads him to undertake his missionary journeys to preach the word, endure persecution and hardship for the gospel, and now he prepares to die for the gospel. Paul gives us an authentic example of faith, hope and love in living out the gospel in our world.

In our passage from Matthew’s gospel, we find the parable of the workers in the vineyard. Jesus uses this parable to teach a very important lesson that God is just. He will not fail to give all of the workers what He promised them. In the parable, those hired last are paid first and this is certainly not meant as a reward for the ones and a slight for the others. The point that must hold our attention is the good luck that befalls the workers hired at the end of the day. The master does not discuss salary with them; nevertheless, they go to work in the vineyard, relying on the master’s judgment and generosity, not worrying about the wage they will receive. They are the models of God’s servants who boast of nothing; they have done only their duty and they are first. The others do not feel penalized. They have had the good fortune to have worked since dawn. It is the master who mentions the wage and indicates the amount and he has nothing to reproach them with. But their behavior at pay time marks them as servants who are jealous of their companions and murmur because God, the master of the vineyard, is good. Those who resemble them will be last, even though they will have borne the day’s burden of work in the heat of the day. God calls each of us to work in the vineyard. To answer this call and to remain available for what He wishes is our joy and our reward.
