7- 1 REPORT OF SURVEY CHAPTER 7: COMMERCIAL 7.1 Introduction Commercial sector is one of the important components for urban and residential area on the state of Melaka. These activities assist in the development of local economy; provide facility and job opportunity for local people. Through the study of this sector, a lot of beneficial program can be done in order to cater the demand for commercial sector in line with strategies and policies for Melaka to become developing state 2010. 7.2 Existing Condition Figure 7.1 shows the structure of Commercial categories for State of Melaka. Based on the table below it shows that the main activities are retail and wholesale (65.0%) and followed by community, social and individual services (15.0%), financial, insurance, property, investment and trade services (12.0%) and transportation and communication (7.0%). While utilities sectors, which consist of electrical, gas and water, is 1.0% only from overall commercial activities. It is because Melaka state government currently adopted certain policies to make the State of Melaka as a center for shopping and tourism, which well known in Malaysia. 7.2.1 Distribution of Commercial activity in Melaka year 2007.
