What Are the Seven Wonders of The World?

This trivia question has been asked so

many times! Yet, the answer is confusing

because there are so many lists of “Seven

Wonders.” There are:

1. The Original Seven Wonders of the

Ancient World

2. The New Seven Wonders of the

World

3. The Seven Natural Wonders of the

World

4. The Seven Wonders of the Industrial

World

5. The Seven Wonders of the Underwater World

The Original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

When someone mentions the Seven Wonders of the World, they often mean this

list.

1. Great Pyramid of Giza – This is the only one of the original seven that is still

mostly intact. Giza is the largest and oldest of the three Pyramids in El Giza,

Egypt, and it is open to visitors.

2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon – No one really knows if these gardens existed,

but the paintings are spectacular! Some say that King Nebuchadnezzar II built

the gardens for his wife. Others say King Sennacherib from Assyria built them.

3. Statue of Zeus at Olympia – The Ancient Roman Emperor Caligula wanted

the Greek God’s heads replaced with his own on all the statues. Stories are

not clear how the state of Zeus got destroyed but involve burning.

4. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus – This temple was rebuilt 3 times for the Greek

Goddess Artemis. The first was destroyed by flood, the second by arson and

the third in a Goth raid.

5. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus – This above-ground tomb was built for

Governor Mausolus of the Persian Empire and his wife/sister Artemisia and

was naturally destroyed by several earthquakes.

6. Colossus of Rhodes – This statue of Helios, the Greek titan god of the sun,

was built to celebrate Rhode’s victory over Cyprus. At 100 feet high, this was

the tallest statue in the ancient world! Destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC,

it was snapped at the knees and sent crashing into the harbor.

7. Lighthouse of Alexandria – This super tall lighthouse was also destroyed by

an earthquake! French archaeologists found some remains in the Eastern

Alexandrian Harbor.

The New Seven Wonders of the World

In 2001, a Swiss company called New7Wonders created a list of the new seven

wonders! Here they are:

1. The Great Wall of China – You were probably surprised this wasn’t on the

original list, right?

2. Petra – This city in Jordan is known as the “Rose City.” The architecture is

carved from ancient rock.

3. Christ the Redeemer – The massive Christ statue in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil.

4. Machu Picchu – The “Old Mountain” from the 15th Century sitting above the

sacred valley in the Andes Mountains in Peru.

5. Chichen Itza –Full of Mayan culture and history, the Kukulkan Pyramid (El

Castillo) is the greatest attraction.

6. Colosseum – The Colosseum in Rome recently started to accept visitors in the

cages, underground passages, and rooms where prisoners, gladiators, and

animals waited to enter the arena.

7. Taj Mahal – The Taj Mahal is a famous Mausoleum in India considered a

legend of eternal love between an emperor and his favorite queen.

The Seven Natural Wonders of the World

The Seven Natural Wonders are:

1. The Grand Canyon in Arizona.

2. The Great Barrier Reef on the east coast of Northern Queensland in Australia.

3. The Harbor of Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara Bay in the background of Christ the

Redeemer photos.

4. Mount Everest

5. Aurora Borealis (northern lights) and Aurora Australis (southern lights).

6. Parícutin Volcano in Mexico renowned for its cone-like shape.

7. Victoria Falls in South Africa on the Zambezi River on the border between

Zambia & Zimbabwe.

The Seven Wonders of the Industrial World

Also called the Seven “Man-made” wonders.

1. S.S. Great Eastern – “Great Babe,” an iron steam sailing ship in the 1800s,

held 4000 passengers. It could travel from Britain to Australia without

refueling.

2. Bell Rock Lighthouse – On the shores of Angus, Scotland, this is the world’s

oldest sea-washed lighthouse.

3. Brooklyn Bridge – The hybrid of cable-stayed and suspension bridge is the

oldest of either type in the United States.

4. London Sewerage System – An impressive engineering feat that came after

“The Great Stink of 1858.”

5. First Continental Railroad – The first public transport in the U.S.

6. Panama Canal – The canal that connects the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans

between North and South America.

7. Hoover Dam – The massive dam on the border of Arizona and Nevada along

the Colorado River.

The Seven Wonders of the Underwater World

1. Palau – Three ocean world currents meet to bring over 1500 fish species,

coral, and marine life.

2. Belize Barrier Reef – The second largest reef in the world is along the

Caribbean coast of Belize.

3. Great Barrier Reef – The largest reef in the world in Australia is seven and a

half times longer than the second largest!

4. Deep-Sea Vents – Pockets of hot jets produced in volcanic areas where

tectonic plates constantly move apart to create hot spots!

5. Galapagos Islands – The 20 islands off the coast of Ecuador support over

2900 marine species. Penguins, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, giant turtles,

dolphins, manta rays, sharks and an incredible array of colorful fish and coral

all live here.

6. Lake Baikal – With over 1700 species, two-thirds absolutely unique to the

area, this is the world’s deepest and clearest lake in Siberia in Russia.

7. Northern Red Sea – A sliver of ocean between Asia and Africa has many

wrecks on the ocean floor for an entertaining dive site.

So, next time someone asks that trivia question about the Seven Wonders of the

World, you can answer with… “Which list?”

broke one of the statue’s thumbs.

3. Petra is built out of pink sandstones, which shows that the Middle East was the

most influential region of the world in the Middle Ages.

4. The stones that were used to build the city of Machu Picchu weighed over 50

pounds and no wheels were used to transport these rocks up the mountain.

5. It is said that over 10,000 animals would be killed in a single day during games

that took place at the Colosseum.

6. One legend about the Taj Mahal is that the emperor had every worker's hand

cut off so that they couldn’t recreate the design.

7. The exact location of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon is unknown as it was built

in Mesopotamia.

8. The statue of Zeus is entirely made of marble and ivory.

9. Colossus of Rhodes is the tallest statue in the ancient world.

10. The original Great Wall of China took about 20 years to complete.

11. Machu Picchu is one of the top 100 most endangered places in the world.

12. A massive fire in 207 AD destroyed the top levels of the Colosseum

structure.

13. The Great Pyramid of Giza is estimated to weigh over five million tons.

14. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a big white structure made of marble

and stood 43 feet tall.
