Finding the Subject in a sentence

Sentences consist of two basic parts: subjects and predicates.

To find the subject, ask who or what is doing something or whom or what is being talked about.

The subject may come at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence.

Lets focus on the complete subject.

Examples of Subjects in Sentences

Example: The young ladies on the team were all good players.

Example: The pitcher struck Felicia out. Example: After practicing for hours, Timmy

bowled two strikes. Example: When will the afternoon train arrive? Example: How kind you are! Example: Hiding in the tall grass was a baby

rabbit.

Copy the paragraph below. Highlight the subject or underline the subject once and underline the predicate (verb) twice.

Ray Bradbury is a writer of science fiction. The Golden Apples of the Sun is a collection of Bradbury’s short stories. The main character in one of his short stories is called Mr. Eckels. For ten thousand dollors, Mr. Eckel sold his short stories to another writer. Bradbury’s short stories made time travel exciting reading.
