One of the most important activities that you can do with your child to make them good at reading is to spend 15 minutes a day reading with them. In addition to the traditional way of making a child read while you sit next to them, there are some great trips and tricks that can work wonders.

Check out these tricks that could help boost literacy skills as you continue reading with your child and make them awesome little book worms!

This could sound simple, but placing your fingers under the words as your reads has many valuable lessons for young children. The left to right and top to bottom orientation in the English language is not something natural to young children. (You may notice this when he or she starts to write her name, often times right to left.) This is a simple skill that has to be learned for great reading skills. You may even treat them to ice cream once they read left to right.

If your child is curious, she may ask the meaning of words she does not recognize. Reading is a wonderful opportunity to expand your child’s vocabulary as most picture books contain some words that your child may not know. After she has read the picture book, try to play simple word games with your child. One example could be where you tell her the meaning of the word and ask her to guess the word. Children love detective games!

Although your child does not need to know perfect punctuation, understanding the meaning of everyday common punctuation could help them out a great deal in the world of reading. Point out to them the meaning of a exclamation point, a full stop and a comma.

Another great detective game is the letter hunt! Ask your child to pick out all the capital Cs in the picture book. Give them a magnifying glass if you have one and let them have a go! If they are really good, time it. At the end of a hunt, give them a great treat!

If your child is mastering some basic techniques, , you can begin to help him or her recognize some easy sight words found in most picture books. The ten most common used words in the English language (ordered by frequency) are: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it. Let them play a scavenger hunt game with sight words!

Before you start reading with your child, ask your child to make a guess about what the story book could be all about. Ask your child to imagine what kids of characters the story could have, what emotions could be in the story and what kind of ending the story could have. Kindling the imagination of children is a very important skill to have for the years to come

Make a forecast

After your child has read the story, ask them a few questions to verify that they have understood the story. If they do not know the answer, help them find the answer in the story book and read the page again. Comprehension skills will never go to waste. As a skill this is one important one to have.

Check for comprehension

Creating a love of reading and learning in your young child is a very important skill to nurture. There must be a fine balance between perfecting a skill and loving to read. Enjoy great books together often and when it feels ok, and sneak in a little bit of extra learning as you begin to read. Remember, children mostly end up doing what their parents do. So, if you want your child to read, spend 15 minutes a day reading yourself!
