Best Practice is to sample
on a regular basis& TEST TUBES
A Boiler Tube Sample Says So
deposit weight density (DWD) indicates that it is time

We’ll elaborate
And, because this is a BEST PRACTICE
Regularlyscheduledtubesample
BEST PRACTICECollect a tubesample at least onceevery two years
After afailure
Take sample from area(s) of thehighest heat transfer & when circulationproblems are known to exist
Take sample from failed tube as wellas sample an adjacent tube
Tube sample should be18-24 inches in length
Utilize proper procedures fordeposit collection & measurement
Measure the deposit on the hot and cold sides separately
Perform analysis for the type of deposit present (i.e. iron, copper, calcium , si licon, etc.) & quantity (g/ft2) of deposit present
For more information on boilertube sampling and analysisprocedures:
Refer to ASME CRTD-103“Consensus on Best TubeSampling Practices for Boilersand Non-Nuclear SteamGenerator”
Compare results from year-to-year
NOTE: For chemicalcleaning, the hot side ismost important.
Recommended removalprocedures are ASTMD3483 Method A or C
18-24 in
NOTE: This determinesbuild-up rates to helppredict chemical cleaningschedule
BEST PRACTICECollect a tubesample duringeach major outage

If you’ve determined your boiler needs cleaned, we recommend consulting an expert to determine the best chemical treatment program.
And, why not have that expert be us?
WHAT DO I DO NOW?
Best solution depends on cycle chemical treatment program used, types and amount of deposit, waste handling costs and other factors that can vary from site to site.
