3 Contingency Model

Use this Checklist to evaluate an application of the 3-contingency model of performance management.

All Contingencies The Same Response

Test-Is the response the same in all three contingencies?

Ineffective Natural Contingencies

Natural Contingency Test-Does the contingency exist prior to performance management?

Ineffective Contingency Test- Is the change in the size and probability of the outcome too small to control behavior?

Competing ContingencyTest- Is this a natural competing contingency? If so, then it is not the ineffective natural contingency.

Performance-Management Contingencies

Effective Contingency Test- Is the change in the size and probability of the outcome large enough to control behavior?

Planned Contingency Test- Is the contingency added and planned? (Designed to manage performance)

Analog to Avoidance Test- If the indirect-acting contingency is to increase or maintain performance, is it an analog to avoidance?

Analog to Punishment Test- If the indirect-acting contingency is to decrease performance, is it an analog to penalty or punishment?

Deadlines for Analog to Avoidance Test- Is a deadline used only for analogs to avoidance and not for analogs to punishment?

Explicit Deadline Test- Is the avoidance deadline explicitly stated as part of the SD?

Delayed Outcome Test- Is the delay of the outcome specified in the before and after condition?

Theoretical Contingencies Need for Theoretical

Contingency Test- Is the theoretical, direct-acting contingency used only when the PM contingency is indirect-acting, and not when the PM contingency is direct-acting?

Direct Acting Test- Is the theoretical contingency direct-acting?

Inferred Test- Is the theoretical contingency inferred rather than observable?

Linked to PM Test- Is the theoretical contingency related to the PM contingency and not to the ineffective natural contingency?

Escape Contingency Test- If the PM contingency is to increase or maintain performance, is the theoretical contingency an escape contingency?

Punishment Contingency Test- If the PM contingency is designed to decrease performance, is the theoretical contingency a punishment contingency?
