Sports and games are popular competitive activities that people enjoy in their leisure time. Other types of hobbies include hobbies of observation, like bird-watching, hobbies of collection, like stamp-collecting, and craft hobbies, like knitting and wood-working.

9:40-9:50 Vocabulary Conversation

• Hobby: an activity pursued for pleasure or relaxation • Leisure: freedom from work, duty, or responsibility • Spare: in excess of need, extra • Compete: engage in an activity for the purpose of winning. • Game: a competitive activity with rules. • Observation: the act of watching with the eyes. • Collection: group • Craft: an activity that requires special skill, usually manual (hands) • Knitting: creation of a fabric by looping thread or yarn • Wood-working: creation of an object using wood • Philatelist: someone who collects stamps • Binoculars: a device consisting of 2 telescopes that enhance vision

Conversation: Hobbies are enjoyable activities that families can participate in together. Here is a conversation in which a family is talking about their plans to do some fun things together. Practice this conversation at least twice. The second time, take a different role.

Jon: Dad, are you going to be able to come to my baseball game? Dad: Yes, I can’t wait to watch you play ball. Jon: Mom, will you be able to come?

Mom: Yes, I can bring my knitting along and knit while I watch your game. Nate: Hey, you guys! I just saw a funny bird in our backyard! Dad: Let’s get the bird book and see if we can identify it. Nate: Ok! It was big, and gray and had a white and black striped tail. Mary: Mom, I found the coolest pink rock in the driveway. Mom: Oh, it’s pretty! That will be a good addition to your rock collection.

A pronoun refers to a noun, and has the same meaning. Example: Darlene is my mom. She is a good cook. Just like nouns, pronouns can be used as the subject in a sentence. Example: He doesn’t like to cook. Just like nouns, pronouns can be used as the object of the verb in a sentence, or as the object of a preposition. Examples: Jan baked a cake. It is delicious! Jan baked the cake for me.

Depending on its use in a sentence, pronouns have different forms: Subject Object Singular neu. I me You you It it fem she her masc he him Plural we us You you They them Singular is one; plural is more than one. For most nouns, simply add s to form the plural. Example: Jan baked 2 cakes today. For other nouns, there are some general rules to make the plural. Noun ends in –y – if the –y is preceded by a vowel, simply add s; if the –y is preceded by a consonant, change the –y to –i and add –es. Examples: You may bring 1 toy, not 2 toys. I’m making a strawberry pie. I love strawberries. Noun ends in –fe or –f – change the -f to -v, and add –es. Examples: There is a pretty red leaf. I need to rake the leaves. Jesus gave His life for us. Our lives should reflect that. Noun ends in –sh, -ch, -ss, or –x – add –es. Examples: There is one true Church. There are many churches in my town. He was using an ax to chop wood. He has two axes.
