#1: Ask Questions

To determine what is impacting their attitude, ask questions such as the following:

1. Is the employee aware of their job description? 2. Does the employee feel they have part in decision making in their role? 3. Does the employee feel they have an open, comfortable work environment? 4. Has the employee had the training they require for their role?

#2: Assign an Activity Have your team members do any of the following:

1. Email you three things that motivate them outside of the workplace. This can help you motivate them when they are on a downward swing.

2. Indicate to you three items that distinguish them to clients (whether internal or external). This also can be used to improve attitude when someone is on a downslide.

3. Form small groups to discuss attitudes. This can be used to discuss poor attitudes and how to escalate them, as well as to discuss why attitudes are high.

#3: Assign a Learning Project Have your team members do any of the following:

1. Read two articles then pair up with a teammate and explain two things they will do to increase their own motivation.

2. Listen to a motivational CD and ask them to email you how it will increase their motivation in the next week.

#4: Role play Allow team members to role play any of the following situations below. Have partner reinforce the positive aspects of each situation:

1. A salesperson who missed out on a big sale 2. A customer service rep just off a call with an upset customer and couldn’t fix the

issue. 3. A manager faced with an entire team of employees with poor attitudes.

#5: Observe Someone With a Positive Attitude After observing someone with a positive attitude, ask the employee:

1. How does this person exemplify a positive attitude verbally? 2. How does this person exemplify a positive attitude physically? 3. How does this person exemplify a positive attitude toward those around them?

#6: Read a Book After reading a book on a topic related to their role:

1. Ask them to email you three things they read and will utilize over the next week. When the week concludes, ask them to email you how they successfully implemented what they took away.

2. Ask them to only read a chapter a week. Each week they can pair up with someone new to discuss what they learned and how they will implement it.

3. After reading the book, meet as a group. Split into small groups and have each group discuss specific chapters. Each group will present takeaways from their chapters to the entire group.

#7: Keep a Journal Have team members keep a journal that will be utilized for:

1. Individual reviews 2. Team meeting discussion items 3. Idea generation/problem solving 4. Observation of others … Look for Positives
