The hottest ticket of the cold winter is back. The Nelson Harness Racing Club’s winter meeting is being held at Richmond Park racecourse this weekend with another two days of action planned.Twice a year the excitement and thrill of the races comes to Nelson and the winter meet has firmly established itself as a must do for Nelsonians as well as the hundreds of trainers, breeders, drivers and race fans that travel to Richmond Park for the two day event.Committee member Bill Monk says the entry to this years meet is free, although a donation to the Nelson Hospice will be appreciated, and he hopes locals

will take the opportunity to enjoy the spectacle of the races. The races have grown in popularity over the past five years in particular

since it has placed increasing emphasis on providing entertainment for all the family. Gone are the days when dad went to the races and left the family behind. At the races on Sunday there will be plenty of fun things to do for the kids

without any cost. These include bouncy castle, balloons, face painting and pony rides, while in Birch Hall kids’ favourite movies will be screened. The Richmond track is one of the fastest all-weather courses in the country and a few years ago Starship set a national mile record here. When the grit is flying at Richmond there’s no better sight in NZ harness racing sport.Bill says racing on the home track is a highlight for the several hobby

“I took my kids for a walk last Sunday and we came across at least a dozen dogs and all of them off their lead. I under-stand most dogs are pretty safe but I don’t know that, how am I meant to know this dog isn’t ag-gressive or isn’t going to attack my kids.”Stephen says Nelson has three zones – where dogs are allowed, where they are allowed but only on a leash and where they are not allowed at all. He says of-fenders will usually get a warn-ing if it is there first offence but owners can expect a $200 to $300 fine otherwise.Liam says Nelson dog owners are complacent because there

has not been a serious dog at-tack in Nelson, but he feels that one is on the way. “It is only a matter of time. Dogs shouldn’t be there if it is a no dog area, I wouldn’t have a problem really if dogs were on a leash and were handled but they are running around in a no dog area. It’s totally unsafe, what can I do if my kids are getting at-tacked by one or two dogs that are large.”Stephen says council will con-tinue to monitor the problem.

With the price of mutton at an all time high, a lo-cal stock agent says farmers will have to keep an eye out for “rustlers”, or stock theives.PGG Wrightson stock agent Richard Eddington says he expects the region will soon start to see people helping themselves to stock because of the high price. Richard says it doesn’t matter wheth-er you have a large farm of a lifestyle block, rustlers will be searching for the right opportunity to nab your prized animals and he has seen it happen before. “You don’t need to flog many lambs to have a couple of grand’s worth,” he says. With fat lambs currently fetching between $150 and $170, just a few of the woolly animals will bolster a rus-tlers pocket or provide a “cheap feed” for their family, says Richard.Rustlers generally target properties at night so Richard says there are several ways the public can do their bit to help out the local sheep owners. “If you see a truck swing by in the middle of the

night, if you’re going past and see some sheep be-ing loaded on, you’re going to have to ask ques-tions. What are they doing loading up lambs at midnight?” After recent cases in other parts of the country Richard believes sheep rustling in Nelson could soon be a major concern for farmers. “There are that many sheep that are scattered around the

region, especially on orchards and it can be hard to keep too close an eye on them all.”Richard says there has even been the odd case in recent years when rustlers have butchered the animals in the paddock before taking the carcass’ away, “but that would be fairly risky.”Determined stock rustlers even tar-geted the local sale yards a few years ago. Since then security cameras and lights have been installed. If an entire farmer’s stock was rustled, Richard believes they would take a huge financial hit. “Farmers don’t usually insure for live-

stock, it’s too expensive, but I have heard in the past cases where there have been five or six hun-dred sheep stolen, but that doesn’t happen very often.”

Date set for amalgamation hearingNelson and Tasman ratepay-ers will find out next Thursday if they will have the chance to vote on amalgamation. The local government commis-sion announced last week that it would make its decision on whether the regions two coun-cils should amalgamate at Sax-ton Field on June 16. It follows

months of interviews, research and investigation by the com-missioners.It began looking at governance options for the region after a petition by Aldo Miccio was signed by 20 per cent of rate-payers in Nelson and Tasman last year.If the commission decides

amalgamation should not be explored the idea will be dead for the mean time. If it believes amalgamation could be a better model, ratepayers in both Nel-son and Tasman will need to vote it in.Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is opposed to amalgamation.

Because you’re different. We’re different. The best care is the care that meets your very own needs.

It would certainly be easier providing a fixed set of care services to our residents, but we think it’s fairer if they only have to pay for the services they need. Which is why we do things differently. We tailor our care services to meet the requirements of an individual and we do so in a way that helps them stay independent for longer. It’s an approach that makes perfect sense to us and a world of difference to you.

Why chose the Metlifecare way of doing things?

Window competition kicks off in CBDThe great window dress up is on and some Nelson stores have already started. To celebrate the countdown to the 2011 Rugby World Cup and welcome the four teams that will play in Nel-son during the tournament, Nelson businesses have adopted a “second team” and will be showing their support by dressing their windows during the month of June. At the end of the month the business with the best window will win a $2000 advertising prize in Nelson Weekly.Stores around the city have been getting into the com-petition with several great displays already up and at-tracting plenty of attention. Displays must be finished by June 22, when judging will begin.Glen from Glen James Jewellers, says he finished his

display on Friday and says it is a great idea for Nelson to show their support for the tournament and all the fans that will visit the region. While some stores have used national flags for inspi-ration, TRB’s skate shop, who are in the Australian quadrant, have used yellow and green stock already in the store to show their support for the Wallabies. But say that is only a starter. “We are planning on getting a fridge full of VB in the window and some Australian hats with the corks on them. It will be look awesome by the end of the month,” says owner Deanne Briggs. The city has been divided into four quadrants for the promotion, each supporting either Italy, USA, Aus-tralia or Russia. To find out which team quadrant your business is in visit www.facebook.com/NelsonWeekly.

Performing Arts Centre: Yes, say youth. No, say existing venues

If it were up to the youth of Nelson the proposed Rutherford Park performing arts centre would go ahead. The Nelson City Council’s proposed $58 million development of Rutherford Park into a large-scale venue incorporating a conference centre and performing arts centre was the dominant topic at annual plan hearing process, with one submission from the Nel-son Youth Council carrying a “certain amount of weight,” according to Nel-son Mayor Aldo Miccio.A survey by the NYC showed more than 70 percent of Nelson youth sup-port the arts centre. “Lots of things like that haven’t come out in the media. But they have a certain amount of weight within council and its decision mak-ing,” says Aldo. The survey included a range of 300 children and teenagers within the region. But while the arts centre is music to the ears of the non-rate paying youths, members of the Nelson School of Music, Theatre Royal and Suter Art Gallery have combined to oppose the pro-posal. It is too early to say whether it will be in the final plan though says Aldo. “It is a big decision and we all have to make sure we listen carefully to all sides before making a decision.”Aldo says the one of the two positives to come from the hearing was the arts community came together with one voice. “It’s progress. It’s highlighted the dissatisfaction.

It’s a good thing that it’s come to the council’s attention.”Aldo says the council does not receive many youth submissions, but receieved one from the NYC for the proposed Stoke skatepark.Councillors have finished the marathon process of reading and hearing submissions to the an-nual plan, this week they start making changes.Nelson City Council received 1688 written sub-

missions to the draft annual plan, with 200 residents and organisations want-ing to speak in support of their sub-mission. Each submitter was given 10 minutes to speak during the four day process. Aldo says the process is vitally impor-tant to the region and he is thrilled so many people took the time to prepare their case and come and speak to the council. “It’s really heartening to know that so many people took the time to prepare their case and come and speak to council – not an easy or comfort-

able experience for some people. We were all impressed with the level of preparation and the passion for their cause that most speakers dis-played. As well as reading all the submissions, hearing from so many people has been a hugely valuable experience for us as a council and will guide us in the tough decision making process that is to come.” The next step in the process is the council meet-ings to discuss making changes to the draft plan. These will begin on Friday and are scheduled to run through until next Wednesday. The final an-nual plan will be adopted on 23 June.

Decision on $58 million complex begins this week

A charity race for local racing super-star Jason Richards has sold out and with less than two weeks until the big day, donations are rolling in say organisers.Last week Nelson Weekly reported on the group of local men aiming to raise money to help one of the region’s most famous athletes – Aus-tralian V8 supercar driver Jason Richards – overcome an extremely rare and aggressive type of cancer. The 12-team Bathurst-style karting race at ProKarts in Tahunanui was organised over a beer and has not only been filled, already 75 per cent of the adver-tising spaces on the karts and around the track have been sold. Now the focus is bring-ing in other attractions to draw race fans, families and other keen spectators for the June 18 race.A school friend of Jason’s, Tony Dyer and mates Nick Fowler and Brendan Gridley say they have been overwhelmed with feedback and support, even having to add an extra team to accommodate demand. Now the focus switches to filling an online auction and bringing in other attractions, including a car show. The trio says all donations, whether product or money, is welcomed with every single cent collected going di-rectly to Jason’s fight with cancer.“We’ve had a lot of stuff donated, businesses calling up saying ‘we’ll give you this and that’ which is great. The more stuff the better,” says Nick.A TradeMe account, dubbed Race-4Jace, launches tomorrow and has been set up to sell all of the donated

gear, which includes signed Josh Coppins riding gear, a Hamilton 400 jacket signed by Greg Murphy, signed John McIntyre jacket, signed Dale Ewers t-shirts, a 7-day use of a Discover NZ campervan and many more.Tony says the auction will be a great way for locals to help out Jason. “They have a website in Australia as well but ours will have hats, t-shirts and other gear from locals.”People can also donated directly into a new Westpac bank account set up for the fundraiser,

Brendan says the other key focus is on making a day of the race with the boys keen to set up a mini car show. Al-ready they have speed-way cars, go-karts, a formula Ford, a Suzuki Swift and of course Fords and Holdens that will be on display dur-ing the day, but they would like to hear from anyone who has a car they would like to dis-play during the day.

Classic Hits and Hauraki will also be there on the day, helping promote the event. The race starts at 9.30am on Satur-day, 18 June. If wet it will be held on Sunday, 19 June.To donate or enquire about showing your car email [email protected] or call Nick on 548 5278, Brendan on 021 887 871 or Tony on 027 544 1541.Jason grew up in Nelson, getting his first taste of motorsport at the Kart-sport Nelson track going on to the big-time, racing for the past decade in the Australian V8 supercar series.

Graham Drummond likes a bit of good ole kiwi ingenuity, although for him the process has changed somewhat over the years. He started with wood and metal as a youngster but when Rheumatoid Arthritis robbed him of his hand strength in his late 20’s Graham was forced to switch from building to designing and is now on the verge of having a patented chop-ping board he invented mass produced.Graham says the “simple” idea came to him a while ago but just recently decided to make it happen. It is a normal chopping board with a spring-loaded bar across one edge. Under the bar you can sit the end of a kitchen knife which allows the user to cut with complete control and only a fraction of the strength needed without it. Graham says he finds the board incredibly use-ful himself and now that he has gone through a long and complicated worldwide patent process, is ready to take it to the world. “The trick with it is you don’t need a special knife or anything like that and the board can still be used by people who don’t need to use the bar, it is still a good chopping board.”Graham says the board is particularly useful for elderly, people with arthritis or even children. “It means you can cut things easily and we all need to cook so it’s something that a lot of peo-ple will find useful,” he says.Graham is hoping to sell the patent to a bigger company to produce after spending almost two years gaining patents, doing most of the paper-work himself. “I’ve become a bit of expert on it that’s for sure, but the internet is a wonderful thing and I’ve been able to sit down at my com-puter and pretty much figure it all out. But now I’ve done that I don’t really want to spend the 20 years trying to push it and I don’t expect to be-come a millionaire off it. To be quite honest I’ve got a few other ideas I’d now like to move onto.”Graham says he hopes to produce a few boards and start selling them to locals before selling the copyright to a larger company. “I get so much use out of it, it would be great if I could help make other people’s lives a bit easier.”

RSA graves get makeover A project to tidy up the graves of Nelson’s returned ser-vicemen is on track after careful collaboration between the RSA, cemetery and workers. The headstones of returned servicemen at Marsden Cem-etery had been set in the ground, meaning the headstones would often move and sink into the ground. But Veteran Affairs has come to the party, pouring close to $100,000 into a project to put all the headstones on concrete beams.

Marsden was one of the last cemeteries in the country not to have the headstones on beams. The project, which is ongoing and won’t be finished for an-other four years, is a delicate one for contractors with Mike Goodyear of Independent Kerb and Concrete saying staff needed to be briefed before it started.“It’s a sensitive job, we come along with a wee digger and working amongst the graves so we had a briefing about it

and we worked hard to make sure it was done right.”To break the old concrete off the headstones work-ers had to dig out the headstone, put it face down on a doubled over foam mattress and carefully break off all the old concrete. The headstones were then reset in the new concrete beams.Sexton at Marsden Cemetery, Alister Papps says it is part of a wider project by Veterans Affairs to tidy up the area, including building a new wall and seat-ing area.“We get a visit once a year from Veterans Affairs to make sure it is up to scratch and they have been pushing for beams for years, we are one of the last cemeteries in New Zealand that aren’t on beams. All our headstones were set in the ground.”So far the entire project has cost close to $100,000 with that figure set to rise. The latest stage of the project started in February and is now finished until the next wave of funding is secured says Alister. “It is a work in progress, but we are getting there and it is needed, it’s going to make things a lot easier for mowing and keeping things level. Some of the headstones were sinking quite bad and some of the elderly widow’s found it hard to move between the headstones.”Nelson RSA president Buzz Falconer says feedback about the new beams has been “excellent, they look fantastic”.

LETTERSTO THE EDITORI was shocked to see Pete Rainey appear on this weeks cover (Nelson Weekly, 31 May) attired in a USA rugby jersey. For four days of the Nelson City Council annual plan submissions councillor Rainey has had his loyal followers parade into the council chambers bagging how much sport was getting in relation to the arts. In fact Cr Rainey provided his ilk with some figures but forgot to mention sports have to pay for the use of the facilities the NCC provides and that those in-volved in sport in this region would be ten to one in relation to those involved in performing arts.It has been a circus with speaker after speaker tell-ing the councillors they only got six lollies in their bag and sport got seven and that’s not fair. Surprisingly (perhaps not) the Arts fraternity did not offer to get their cheque books out in support of their demands. They just want everyone else to pay for their pleasures. Big voices and deep pockets eh!

When the Maungatapu Track was acknowledged to be too steep for a practical road to Marlborough, interest returned to the old Maori track from Happy Valley, over the Whangamoa range to the Collins and Rai Valleys. James Mackay had explored this route as early as 1867, but with Government funding delays it was nine years before a bridle track was formed, and another nine before the

route was finally opened as a Nelson to Blenheim coach road. In 1885 the route caught the imagination of many Nelsonians who drove their horse-drawn vehicles over that new, narrow, precarious, winding road. Even three young men on penny-farthings tackled the mountain. One crashed and returned to Nel-son carrying his bike. The other two made it to Blenheim in two days.

After a fatal accident at the intersection of Waimea West Rd and Golden Hills Rd, locals are getting behind a petition to improve conditions at the junction.Redwood Valley resident David Van-stone lives a few kilometres up the road from the intersection and uses the connecting roads a lot.Coming from Upper Moutere and Richmond the 90 degrees angled bend is signposted with a speed limit of 35, but it is the visibility and the give-way confusion that is causing the main problems according to David.David says the recent accident which killed Foxhill man Richard MacKay isn’t the first to occur at the intersec-tion. “Two or three people have ended up in the church yard; they’ve gone clean through the fence.”David has been in Redwood Valley for eight years and several other vehicles have also gone straight through the intersection, narrowly missing a power pole on the corner of Waimea West Rd and the Moutere Highway.

David has lived in a lot of places around New Zealand and believes Nelson is one of the only places where you will find a right angle bend on a main road. “It doesn’t make sense,” he says.

Along with his neighbours, David is now putting together a petition with the hope council will be able to make improvements to the section of road.People David had already talked to agree the section of road was “not flash” and that it was “shocking”.He believes there is a huge difference between the “state of the art” River Rd and Waimea West Rd intersection, which is just down the road, and this one. The petition has been organised to try

and get improvements on the intersection, even if it’s only to take out the hedge, which in Da-vid’s opinion, is preventing clear visibility. “I get around the country a bit and this is as bad as it gets really,” he says. The intersection petition can be found at the Stoneridge Café on the Moutere Highway, just past the kart track.

IN BRIEFCHATHAM CUP: AMI Nelson Suburbs lost its second round Chatham Cup football clash with arch-rivals Richmond Athletic yester-day. Suburbs were the first to score thanks to a Gagame Feni goal but Richmond hit back with two strikes to Ben Wright in the first half and Wes O’lea in the second.

MULTISPORT: Sharp Attack has won the Rollo’s 24 hour Adventure Race in 19 hours and nine minutes, after a hard night racing in a story Nelson. Sharp Attack is; John Harris, Tony Bateup, Trevor Voyce, Lynley Coventry. The team were runners up last year.

FOOTBALL: Nelson College first XI football team is the only thing that stands in the way of Nayland College qualifying in the top half of the national secondary school champion-ship draw. Nelson College thrashed Waimea College 6-1 last week and will now take on Nayland and Nayland College on Wednes-day. The game kicks off at 1pm.

Nayland College’s German giant wants to lead school haka

GERMAN GIANT: Nayland College first XV star Hassan Rayan has been a revelation in the side’s debut Press Cup season. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Hassan Rayan wants to be the first German to lead the haka. The 16 year-old Frankfurt-born Nayland College lock has caught the eye in the side’s debut Press Cup season with his barnstorming runs and grafting work at the breakdown. In Nayland’s 17-15 victory over Waimea College Hassan was par-ticularly impressive and backed up another strong performance in its 39-10 loss to Rangiora High School. Hassan says the win two weeks ago gave the side a huge amount of belief. “You could see the disappointment in their eyes. I was just amazed we finally won our first game. It was just awesome,” he says. But with only six weeks left on his 12 month exchange, he his hoping to lead the haka before he departs, and it’s something coach Ant Holder has not ruled out. “That would be fantas-tic and it’s a memory he will cherish forever. I wouldn’t say no to it that’s for sure,” says Ant. “It’s not really a decision for me to make, it’s for the players.”Hassan says he “loves” performing the haka and is going to teach it to

his club back home. The German under-16 international has been playing rugby for two and a half years and his love for the sport drew him to New Zealand. He played a handful of matches for the Nayland College under-18 side last season but has been one of the standouts in Nayland College’s debut Press Cup campaign. “You can see the other teams are better drilled and do this for way longer. I guess it’s the fact that you’re new in the competition. Our win showed we can do it. We can step up to that level.”Ant says Hassan’s work ethic and eagerness to learn are his greatest at-tributes. “If we had 15 Hassans then we’d be right up there, in regards to his energy.”Forwards coach Kerry Shaw moved Hassan from prop back to lock in the pre-season and it has been a master-stroke move.Hassan’s goal is to earn himself a professional contract in the future as well as representing the Germany national team. “I thought about go-ing to France, but they speak French, that’s a problem.”

The Nelson under-17 and under-15 teams competed well in the Marj Jen-don Tournament in Wellington on the weekend. The under-15 team had powerful per-formances to record four convincing wins from five. They defeated Wellington Gold 41–20, Wairarapa Development 50–13, Wel-lington Talent 50–13 and Kapi Mana 40–28.Kapi Mana was previously unbeaten and was level pegging until the final quarter when Nel-son rattled home a ten goal advantage.Coach Tish Jamieson said her charges were brilliant, both on and off the court and were a great team unit.Thirteen year-old, defender Hannah Davenhill has been outstand-ing, pulling in 15 intercepts over the first two days while Courtney Robin-son, who is normally a shooter, has had some commendable performances in the unaccustomed position of goal de-fence.Lucy Ingham was superb through the mid court, providing direction while putting in some great feeds to shoot-ers Ellie Bell and Shaun Aindow who worked the circle well.Nelson’s only loss was against Kapiti – going down 27–35. They lost the first half by eight however they finished strongly, drawing the second half. The under-17 team looked a little over awed in their first up game against Wel-lington Black when they were defeated

23–33.Nelson came out firing on all cylinders against Marlborough, making every post a winning one as they accounted for their neighbours 45–14.Coach Sam Lowe said it was a great team effort as all ten players experi-enced court time. The girls gelled to play an excellent full court defence and had great ball speed.Maddison Billens put in a sterling per-formance at goal shoot returning a 91

percent goal average - 32 from 35 - while Emese Bis-mark and Ella Marwick worked hard to ensure an abundance of quality ball.Goal keep Paige Pointon rebounded strongly while Jordan Webby had a superb game, pulling in an astonish-

ing five intercepts in one quarter. Ash-ley Laing created valuable turnover ball and drove well through court.Maddison put in a MVP performance when she put in a flawless performance at goal shoot against Western Wanganui netting 17 from 17. Kelsey Whiting and Rosa Edwards provided the sup-port at goal attack. By applying pressure through court there were numerous in-tercepts in the 38–28 win.Although there was considerable ball gained, it was not always converted in the Wellington Gold game. Three of the quarters were tied, however it was just two goals deficit in the second quar-ter which remained in the 27–29 loss. Maddison had another fine game shoot-ing 92 percent.

Maddison was again the go to girl in the match up against Kapiti, shooting 10 from 11 in the first half, while Caroline Fergusson did a power of work around the circle edge in the 25–32 loss.Another great team effort and a lift in stats by Kelsey Whiting and Rosa Ed-wards paved the way for a 37–28 win over Kapi Mana. Jordan had an out-standing game while Whitney Orange

Town fight off Country in the rain to take game one

GOING TO TOWN: Eliot Smith hits the ball up in the ProLeague Town versus Country match at the Tahunanui Playing Fields on Saturday. The rain-riddled match was won by Town 32-28. This was game one of a three match series. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The passion of origin took center stage as Town held off a spirited Country 32-28 on Saturday.Tasman Rugby League’s ProRugby League Town versus Country game was played in a wet downpour at Tahunanui Playing Fields, but it was Tahunanui Tiger’s Simon Dun-can who heated the game up with a 20 point contribution in the tight victory. The match went down to the final whistle with Country throwing a forward pass in the build up to a disallowed try on 80 minutes, to give Town the early bragging rights in the three match series.Town is a combined representative team made up of players from the table topping Stoke Cobras, Tahu-nanui Tigers and Victory Vikings. And while a quick look at the TRL standings would suggest Country, made up of Motueka Tigers and bottom-placed Wanderes Wolves, would be easy beats, they very quickly proved there was a lot more substance as it opened the scoring early in the game with a try by Hal-ley Atama. But it wasn’t long before Town answered back with a try to Eliot Smith. The game went back and forth with both sides struggling to complete

sets. Rain continued to play its part in the match, leaving the half time score at 16-12 to Town in an enter-taining first spell.Conditions worsened into the sec-ond half. However, Country were fired up and the momentum started to go their way as they took com-plete control on the scoreboard with a hat trick to Sam Hedges. But in true ‘Origin’ style, Town an-swered back with the game’s sec-ond hat trick, this time to Simon, who also converted four times in the game. Stoke Cobra’s center Phil-lip Asi scored a well taken try and after a good break by Hoani Tau-whare and a nice chip through into the corner, Jamein Bristowe went over the line to give Town the lead for the first time in the second half. There was enough time on the clock for one last attempt as Coun-try were eager for the important win on away soil. Country looked to have scored a four pointer, but unfortunately for them a call by the touch judge ruled a forward pass and the try was dis-allowed.Town managed to hold on by the slimmest of margins and lead the series 1-0.Game two will be held at the Tahu-nanui Playing Fields on June 25.

Gabriel Callaghan is a young man on a mission. Like any athlete, he has high hopes of one day wearing the silver fern. But Gabriel is slightly different to his rowing team mates and competitors. He’s deaf. But he says this doesn’t hold him back in any way, as rowing is about using your body to move a boat. There has been one race that the 17 year-old missed though, because he didn’t hear his name being called out. “But I rowed in the next race and used the time from that to compare to the race I missed, so I don’t get affected as much.”The Stoke resident has followed his mother into rowing and in April returned from a successful Maadi Cup competition. Gabriel made it into two finals for singles in the Under 17 and Under 18 division. This past season he also won a bronze medal at the South Island Secondary School championships in the U17 four.Gabriel has been rowing for three years and says he most enjoys the thrill of the race and trying to push himself ahead of other people who have trained just as hard. “The feel of the boat moving in harmony with the body is a glorious feeling during a race.” The down side to being a rower for Gabriel is the early wake-up call. The Garin College student wakes up at 4.30am so he can get ready, all while he is hungry, tired and “cranky”.

“But it’s not too bad, I know some people who wake up at 3am to get to rowing,” he says. And losing races isn’t that flash either, according to the teenager. Some of Gabriel’s team mates are already in England rowing so he now has a goal of doing that too. Gabriel says he also wants to get to the Olympics one day. Training at Port Nelson and along the Boul-der Bank every morning, and a few times after school means Gabriel is on the water around six or eight times a week. But the fortnight before Maadi Cup, his training sessions were bumped up to around 12 sessions a week. Gabriel says his motivation for rowing is having something in life that he is good at. “Without it, I wouldn’t really have a purpose in my life and I would be bored and unmotivated for everything else.”Gabriel says his mother has helped him a lot with his sport. She has helped with costs and was an avid spectator, even if the cost to get to the venue and watch was also high. She has also given her son tips from her own rowing career to help him compete better. Gabriel says he also wouldn’t be where he is today without his coaches, who have helped him to use a single scull. Rowing is a tough sport according to Gabriel, but he also says it’s a great sport. “You can really get fit doing rowing. People should come and give it a try and you will make friends for life.”

What is the most important thing to do when you want to sell your house?

You need to choose the right agent to work for you. Who you choose to market your property will directly impact on the time it takes to sell and how much money you end up with in your pocket. How your agent markets themselves to you is how they are likely to market your property to prospective buyers. Do they appear professional? Are they knowledgeable? Have they prepared well? Can they demonstrate success? Are they a clear communicator? Do they offer choices to suit you rather than themselves? And are they excited and motivated about the property and the opportunity to work for you? If an agent can satisfy all the above questions, has a comprehensive service programme, and is a strong negotiator who will work hard to get you the very best outcome, then you can be confident that your real estate experience will be a positive and successful one. What is a hospital in residential care?

Kensington Court has a hospital unit which allows its staff to provide hospital level care for those clients who need it. Only a geriatrician or the local assessment agency can decide whether a client requires that level of care. Hospital care in residential care is very different from rest home care. It requires higher staffing ratios as staff need to work in pairs to complete cares for the clients. There is no doctor in a residential care facility hospital, but there is a registered nurse on duty as well as care assistants (caregivers). Many clients require the assistance of items like hoists to help move clients from bed to chair and vice versa, safely. Kensington Court Hospital has large spacious rooms, some with an outside door, and most rooms have a full en suite which is also spacious. The hospital has its own entrance that can be accessed by family and friends. It boasts a large lounge with a dining area at the end of it with a small kitchenette. It also has a quiet lounge which can be used by family or clients of the facility. Come and have a look at what Kensington Court Lifecare has to offer you or your loved one.

NEW WORLDSTOKE

Stoke win four out of fourAccessman Stoke revelled in the deluge on Saturday with wins in all their senior grades last Saturday.Stoke showed strength, character, patience and determi-nation as the division one side swept away New World Huia 24-0 at Greenmeadows.Stoke continue to improve each week as they edge closer to a playoff berth, the win cementing them of a top three finish before the semi-finals.Stoke struck the only points of the half with a well timed run by Tasman Mako Sione Holani, resulting in a try. Shaun Begg nailed the conversion.Stoke were not content with just playing safe secure rugby and forced the pace on numerous occasions, but luckily held strong on defence to deny a resurgent Huia any hope of scoring a try.  CJ Webber scored mid way through the second half and a second try to Sione effec-tively jolted Huia’s momentum.  Begg converted all three tries and added a penalty.Stoke’s division two side kept their playoff hopes alive with an exciting 27-17 victory in against a hearty Collingwood side struggling for numbers, and in front

of Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder. Center Chad Lowrie was again the star of the show, scoring twice. Jared Haveill, Sami Sami and Craig Groome also scored. They will need to beat arch rivals Waimea Old Boys this weekend to stay in the title hunt.Tahunanui Super Liquor Stoke Reds cruised past Rangers 55-8 at Upper Moutere rugby ground.Thirty-three unanswered points in the second half sealed the victory after leading 22-8 at half time. Some good forward work against an at times dominant Rangers pack saw the backs finally getting the ball they needed and showed, given an inch, they will definitely take a mile scoring out wide with some impressive skills on a very wet pitch. Stoke Reds host Waimea Old Boys at Greenmeadows this weekend.Stoke Womens beat Central 46-0 on the weekend.Players of the day were Sallyanne Archibald and Tori Hunter. It was a convincing win with both forwards and backs dominating territory and possesion. The girls were pleased to hold Central scoreless after getting off to a flying start.

They are from back left; Thomas Bailey, Thomas Te Kai, Asher Craig, Brook Watkins, Celeste Bowman and Joshua Nell. From front left; Zion Scott. Max Fraine, Justin Gardyne, Josh Beal, James Blackler and William Loversidge.

TOO FAST: Stoke division two winger Brett Dickens scoots past his Collingwood counterparts at Greenmeadows on Saturday. Stoke won the game 27-17. The win keeps their playoff hopes alive, but they now head in to a must win clash against arch rivals Waimea Old Boys this coming Sat-urday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
