Nelson Police would like to thank members of the public who came to the assistance of a po-lice officer who was being punched in the head by a man in Richmond last week. The officer was driving his patrol car on Salis-bury Rd about 5:30pm when he witnessed a scuffle between the man and a woman and stopped to speak to the pair. The man verbally abused the police officer be-fore punching him several times in the head.Members of the public came to the aid of the officer and the man was eventually restrained and handcuffed.Sergeant Craig Barker says he was very grate-ful that people had stopped and helped the of-ficer out. An 18 year-old man appeared in the Nelson District Court and was charged with male as-sualts female and assualt on a police officer.

“I think it’s fair. If the speed limit is 50kph then you should watch it.”

Dave Shand, Richmond.

“I suppose it doesn’t really matter does it. That’s the law.”

Clint Redwood, Richmond.

“No it’s not. My partner has been done by that many times. It’s not wrong necessarily, but I think they should make it more known.”

Mel Powell, Richmond.

“If I had been caught by it I would say that really sucks, but it does seem a funny place to put it.”

Claims police have been attempting to “trick” Richmond drivers by catching them speeding at the bottom of a hill have been completely re-futed.Hill St resident Steve Hannah spotted the sil-ver speed camera van parked on the downward slope on the northern end of Hill St, between Templemore Drv and Champion Rd.He questioned why a speed camera would be parked on the downward slope of the road, say-ing it “reeks of revune gathering.” “I’ve got no problem with speed cameras being concealed or tucked around behind a bush or something, but it needs to be on a level ground. It would be very easy to slip from 55km to 61km going down that hill,” he says.Steve says the posi-tioning of the van leaves the police wide open to accusations of revnue gathering. But police say the an-swer is simple: don’t speed and you don’t have a problem.“If you do go over those little humpy bits and you’re doing 50kph and you creep over then you’re fine. But if you’re trying to drive to the tol-erance that everyone knows that the police oper-ate, then yes it might creep up to 61, 62, 63kph,” says acting road policing manager Stu Wright. “If someone gets a ticket at 61kph that’s actually 22 percent above the speed limit.”Steve says he had seen the speed camera in that spot many times over the past couple of years and thought the next time he spotted it, he would take a photo.

Steve approached the police officer in the van and questioned why he was there. One thing the police officer told Steve was that speed cameras were not allowed to be set up within 250m of a speed change zone, enabling drivers sufficient time to slow down, and Steve says the Hill St situation is the same argument. “People are automatically going to speed up at the bottom of the hill but that speed will wash off when they hit the level road again.”Stu says speed cameras are parked in certain ar-eas due to a variety of reasons, one being com-plaints by residents. With Hill St commonly used as a thoroughfair, there was a high chance

of people speeding towards their destina-tion, creating a higher level of danger, says Stu.The tolerance is there to allow for speedo error or a slight creep up, and Stu says that there is a very big dif-ference between a pe-destrian getting hit at 50kph to one getting hit at 61kph. “There is a much long-

er reaction time. If you’ve got a young child or a pedestrian running out then you’ve got a lot longer stoppage time. We’re just trying to get everyone out there driving safely.”The camera was not there to target people going down the hill, but to target anyone speeding. “If they hit someone walking across the road we are going to have a serious injury or worse.”Stu says drivers must realize the tolerance is not a target. There are states overseas where anyone over the speed limit would be handed a fine, but Stu says he doesn’t want it to get to that stage here in New Zealand.

What happens when a building can’t be built in earthquake-ravaged Christchurch? – it’s built in Richmond instead.Skyline Buildings constructed an on-site office and smoko building with bathroom and amenities and within three weeks it was sent packing one way to the Red Dale mine in Reefton, a job usually given to builders in Christchurch.Stuart Flowerday says Skyline and Trubet have constructed buildings for schools in towns like Kaikoura, Maruia and Westport, but Christchurch’s situation could now become Nelson’s gain with the com-pany stating the possibil-ity of constructing buildings within the region and truck-ing them down via the Lewis Pass to Christchurch, as the city continues to rebuild. “I believe that any timber floor and framed buildings is a real option to construct here and truck it down,” says Stuart. “Everybody is too busy think-ing about earthquake work. There is a lack of transporta-ble-type buildings. A Porta-com type building would nor-mally be used in this situation, but there is limited availability in Christchurch.”

Stuart believes his company could truck down a building once a week if the demand was high enough.Stuart admitted their latest project, which was building an on-site office for an opencast coal mine on the West Coast, would never have come about if Christchurch hadn’t had the earthquake. “We see ourselves as an option for ready-made buildings going to Christch-urch. We’re certainly an op-tion to go to the Coast with more buildings, and while it looks expensive to lift a build-ing with a crane, Nelson has the resources we can use. Our builders and sub-contractors don’t want to shift out of Nel-son away from their families, we can build here, send a building off with the floorcov-erings, painting, electrical and plumbing work all done by lo-cal contractors”Stuart says building them in Nelson is a much cheaper op-tion than building on site, out of town. In the past they have had to send subcontractors down, clocking up ten hours just by travelling, which mul-tiplies costs. The 9 x 6m building was driv-en down overnight last Thurs-day and was up and running by Friday.

International mathlete Benedict Morris-sey claimed Nelson’s biggest Dux trophy, handed out at Garin College’s end of year prizegiving on Thursday. The 17 year-old says the accolade was a bit of a giveaway when the seating ar-rangement had been planned prior to the prizegiving. “Dux is traditionally called last. I thought ‘this looks good,” he laughed.Benedict will head to the University of Canterbury to do an honours degree in mathematics.

Toy Run attracts 300More than 300 motorcyclists took to the streets of Nelson, collecting toys for the Salvation Army on Saturday. The Ulysses Nelson Toy Run is held each year and gives motorcycle enthusiasts a chance to give back to the children of Nelson. Each rider brought at least one toy along for the ride, while members of the public stood out on the road as a truck gathered them for collec-tion.The route ran from Cambridge St in Richmond through to Trafalgar Park in Nelson, where the toys were handed over to the Salvation Army.Organiser Lorraine Lindsay says the turn out was down on previous years, when 500 people participated, but was still a great success with hundreds of toys being gathered. Twelve riders came from Hokitika.

School leavers create their own summer jobWhen one Richmond school leaver couldn’t find a summer job, two of his closest friends took some initiative and created a business for him.Titled BAM, Ben Alder, Alex Davies and Mitchell Ross, all 18, have created a labour-ing specialist business where they charge just $10 for common, every day jobs around the house.Whether it be mowing the lawns, washing the car or even walking the dog, they are confident they are the cheapest option cur-rently on the market. They will also do ‘per hour jobs’ like gut-ter cleaning, gardening, window cleaning, painting and others, on negotiation.

Ben says he was sick of having to shout Mitchell McDonalds, and he had been sit-ting on the business venture since he was 10 years-old, after his father told him to go around the neighbourhood seeing what jobs he could do for $10. “We were gonna give up on him because he was going to go on the dole. So we thought we’d give him one more shot and we’d try get him a job,” says Ben. “The main idea was to get him money and a job because he didn’t have one.”Ben is a full-time builder but will be the administrator for the business. “I take the phone calls,” he says.Alex works around 30 hours a week as a

roofer, but will also take any extra hours he can get.Ben says school leavers struggling to find work just aren’t looking in the right places and that they should be open to doing any-thing they could at their age. “There’s plen-ty of work out there. You just have to look hard enough,” he says.Post NCEA exams, the boys had spent the last couple of days handing out flyers ad-vertising their idea to people in the com-munity. The trio can also supply some equipment but charges may apply. To contact Ben, please call 547 3215 or 027 244 4194.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Putting together the Nelson Arts Guide has been a heck of a task for three local artists, selling it hasn’t been anywhere near as dif-ficult though. As of this week the guide has sold just under 2000 copies, almost half of the entire stock, in just three months. The guide is only published bi-annually so organisers are thrilled with the early re-sponse. “We had it released in time for the Rugby World Cup and that certainly gave us a great start,” says Nic Foster.”Now the group hope to see another 1000 copies go over the summer period and have added a couple of incentives to help tempt

locals into buying it. Each guide has a jacket with a special code; text that in and the win-ner will take home a Kate Gold bowl. Second place will win a night’s accommodation at Warwick House and there are also t-shirts to give away. Louise Allan says she hopes people will take advantage of the promotion and buy the guides for Christmas presents. “It’s a great gift; it looks great, a nice size and is designed like a coffee table book so can hang around for some time and it has so much great information in it too.”The guide, featuring 66 local artists, can be found in stores all over Nelson or by visiting www.nelsonartsguide.co.nz.

An arty success for guide

SUNSHINE SUPREME: With less than a month to go, the sunshine race appears to be over with Nelson holding onto an unassailable lead. Contenders Blenheim and Whakatane are too far behind, mean-ing Nelson will hold onto the title it won back from Whakatane last year, unless the weather gods pull a huge upset and park a rain cloud over our sunny region for the next four weeks. The most recent data from the National Institute of Water and Atmos-pheric Research, or NIWA, shows Nelson has had 2287.8 hours of sunshine this year, until the end of November. Over the same period Blenheim, in second place, has had 2191.3 hours and Whakatane in third has had 2188.4 hours. Nelson’s lead over Blen-heim is 96.5 hours. The official sunshine stats won’t be released from NIWA until early January 2012.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING CLOSE TO HOME IN TAPAWERA: Have you heard about the new event that is happening in Tapawera? On December 10, there is to be a farmer’s market and Christmas Fair at the Hidden Café. The market and fair will start at 10am and be open until 5pm with a wide variety of stalls and produce available. The Hidden Café is located in a very attractive setting and this would be a very pleasant day out in the country. The idea was born after a group of local ladies visited the an-nual Christmas Fair at Culverden. There has been an enthusiastic response from people keen to have stalls showcasing their talent or produce, and all that is needed now is for lots of people to come and support this new initiative.

SANTA WALK: The most ringing bells and best Christmas costume will win turkeys in the annual Classic Hits Jingle Bells Jog and Santa Walk on Sunday. The annual fun run/walk which is a family favourite and supports the local activities of the Heart Foundation starts in the carpark of the Tra-falgar Centre and follows the waterfront to the beach. Registration opens at 9.15am with judging of the costumes just prior to the 10am start. Entry fee is $5 for individu-als or $10 for a family.

A new Maori immersion school is set to be-come the first 5 star rated green building in the top of the South Island. The new school is being designed under the Green Building Council’s green star rating sys-tem, with a 5 star rating considered New Zea-land excellence. The region’s first all Maori language school will have features that include a rain water collec-tion system, solar water heating, glazing walls which utilise the winter sun and the best insu-lation available, says David Grigor of Arrow Inter-national. Pro-ject and construction managers, Arrow In-ternational, refer to the rating system as “com-prehensive,” but in real-ity the system guide is about as thick as three phone books. Overall it all adds up to an ex-tremely smart building that is more efficient, productive, healthy to work in and less of a drain on natural resources.Establishment Board of Trustees chairperson Dayveen Stephens says the conservation and sustaining the Maori language go hand-in-hand, and the new school will be a reflection of that. “Care for the environment is huge in Maori culture. Looking after what is around us, how we can sustain that and grow what we already have,” says Dayveen. It’s not just the building that is scrutinised under the green star rating system, so are the

materials and construction. All products that can be sourced locally will be used and those products will have a percentage of recycled ma-terial from reinforcing steel to insulation. An environmental management plan has been set up for the construction phase with a focus on waste minimisation. “We will set up recycling bins for metal, plaster board, plastic and non-treated timber, which can be used for the hangi pit,” says David.Four million dollars of Ministry of Education

money will fund the school, in a boost for Mao-ri language and the local economy. Ninety per cent of the contracts have been tended, which are all local. Building consent has been granted and construction is due to start on the site next to Salisbury school in early 2012.Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi will be a composite school catering for year zero to year 13. Te Kura will educate 61 students, with all instruction in Te Reo Maori, apart from the subject of English. Students are enrolled and classes are scheduled to begin in term three next year.

they are easily recognisable – EERST hopes that one day all students around New Zealand will be using the same Paper4trees bin system. EERST does not collect any paper or cardboard, it is up to the schools to organise a collection.Since 2008, 1189 native trees have been donat-ed to Tasman schools, which have been planted in their school grounds or in the local commu-nity. They have diverted 297 tonnes of paper and cardboard from the landfill, saved 2378 cubic metres of landfill space and have prevented 748 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the at-mosphere. EERST is currently looking for local sponsors to support Paper4trees in Tasman schools. If you or your business is interested in support-ing Paper4trees in Tasman please contact EE-RST on 0800 727 4873.

It was labelled ‘the immortal story of a forgotten Wakefield School teacher’. But for at least two Tasman residents, Annie Jessop certainly hasn’t been forgotten.Local historian John Dearing recently displayed a story pieced together by 45 postcards sent to and from Annie between 1906 and 1909, at the Richmond Library. The three year journey told a brief snippet of a regular woman’s life as a school teacher in the early 19th century.John is a postmark collector and noticed that a handful of the postcards he had been collecting were addressed to the same person. It was only then that he decided to look for more “Annie Jes-sops” in order to establish a story. But the more he found out about Annie, the longer the wait grew without knowing whether any of her relatives were still alive.Until now.Irene Rosser was at her home in Mapua when she got a call from her brother, who had just been reading about Annie’s postcard display in the Waimea Weekly. “I didn’t realize all those postcards were in ex-istance. She used to keep a lot of papers and things, but I hadn’t ever seen so many postcards. I got more and more excited as I read them,” says Irene.John had heard of a handful of distant relatives who only knew of Annie as a great aunt, and was stunned to get the phone call from a woman claiming to be her granddaughter. “When Irene rang I was just knocked over,” says John. “I talked to a lot of people, but she was gone. She was only in Wakefield for three years.

Nobody had any record of her, other than in tra-ditional school record books. John says the display was also about bringing Annie back to life. “I wanted to immortalize her. I sort of began to realize if I knew her, just from those little messages.”Irene was able to connect some missing pieces, including photos of Annie’s husband Ben Strat-ford, and confirming many things elluded to within the short messages on the postcards. It was suggested in the postcards that she was going to marry Ben, although she did have many suitors. “It’s good that it’s now backed up with substan-tial facts,” he says.Annie taught at Tophouse School just six years post the Tophouse murders, which John thought showed strength in her personality. “She was tough and I mean she did go to Den-niston which was all rough and tumble.”The story gradually faded following Annie and Ben’s marriage, although Irene mentioned that she had lived her adult ages in Hira on her own farm, which was then passed through the gen-erations.Irene has plenty of photos with Annie when she was a little girl, despite her deceasing when she was just six years-old. But she remebered her quite well. Annie always had a lot of paperwork and made her own soap. “But when you get older you wished you knew more,” she says.Irene has plenty of family throughout the coun-try, including one sister that followed the family tradition of school teaching. Once the exhibit is over, John and Irene are plan-ning on creating a biography which will be given to other members of the family.

Last night I had the privilege of watching students from Waimea Intermediate perform various items – yup it’s the season for end-of-year functions. The talent was amazing – some of the young people had very powerful voices, some displayed skilled musicianship or dancing competence – overall there was a high level of confidence. I hope caregivers and the students are thankful to the teachers for all their work over the year. Watching the young people one couldn’t help but think how valuable the youth are – a bunch of princes and princesses – I hope we as adults don’t make choices that will hurt them. I say this because the decisions we make matter and if we are not wise and considered in our decision making we really hurt those closest to us. Lately I’ve been enjoying listening to Coldplay’s latest album “Mylo Xyloto” (pronounced MY-loe ZY-loe-toe). The lyrics from the song “Princess of China” (which is a duet by Chris Martin and Rihanna) offer an insight to the importance of wise choices. In the song a couple who were once close, “burnin’ bright”, who were “once upon a time on the same side” then for whatever reason things turn to custard and “He” runs away. Could it be that over time there was a series of lapses of reason, several unwise choices, perhaps some driven more by hormonal urges than sound decision making, but overall choices made without thinking things through properly and considering the consequences? Because this couple could have ended up as “princess” and “king”, he with “a castle”, she with “a ring”; but instead he throws it all away and steals her “star”. And what is the result? The song ends with

Rihanna singing from the depth of her heart, repeating eight times the result of selfish decision making. She cries “you really hurt me…you really hurt me…you really hurt me…you really hurt me…” Self-centred choices create a pain that words can barely express. If you are having a sudden rush of blood to the head and thinking of calling it quits in your relationship; if

you’re thinking of abandoning those closest to you; if you’re about to make a lifestyle choice that is purely self-centred; listen to the haunting words of Rihanna. Selfish decision making really really really really really really really really hurts those closest to us – it devastates them. If you can’t see a way out of your problems, talk with someone who will help you truly, and not someone who will give you only what your ears want to hear. Talk to someone who is wise. The Bible says “A fool will believe anything; smart people watch their step. Sensible people are careful to stay out of trouble, but stupid people are careless and act too quickly.”(Proverbs 14:15-16).

May all of our decision making help and not hurt those closest to us. May we learn to be more like Jesus Christ who had a remarkable ability to make selfless decisions rather than selfish hurtful choices. God Bless you this Christmas, Jon.

Wrestling up a stormIt takes a real man to enter a wrestling ring surrounded by 200 die-hard Blenheim fans exhausting their lungs as you are thrown around in a pair of yellow tights. But for Nelson’s Justice Sharpe and D-Mac it’s definitely worth the trip over the Whangamoa for.Rhys Walsh, aka Justice Sharpe, and Duncan McDougall, aka D-Mac, are Southern Championship Wrestling’s sole performers from the Nelson region, and they’re set to take on each other in the “King of Nelson exhibition match” at Rock ‘N’ Wrestle this Saturday at Marlborough Boys College Hall.Rhys says he originally began wrestling when he was trying to get into shape, and a friend “out of the blue” mentioned Blenheim’s SCW.The pair were trained by Nelson’s Sam Macmillan, who recently spent three months in Canada under the tuition of former WWE wrestler Lance Storm. “He taught us absolutely everything we know. Sam is like the perfect wrestling package, not to get really weird about it, but he’s tank, he’s got all the moves; he can do high flying, he can do power. He could man-handle me and I’m triple digit weight,” says Rhys.Wrestling Marlborough fighters on their home turf means the pair are often competing against the audience too. “You go out there and you never know what you’re

going to get from the crowd. You just have to go with it really,” says Duncan. There had been talk about bringing a show to Nelson, but without a ring trailer to carry it over here, it is currently unlikely. Although the duo would love a bit of home support every now and then.Rhys and Duncan have always wanted to be wrestlers since they were kids and they both have a joint admiration of WWE wrestler Chris Jericho. “Since I was a kid that’s all I wanted to do. Getting into the crowd is great. Working off their boos off their cheers.”Justice Sharpe’s signature move is the sit-down spine buster, while D-Mac finishes with a bridged Indian death-lock.But they are training regularly to perfect a catalogue of wrestling moves and techniques.Duncan says there is a lot of choice about future suitors, but it is not until you reach the United States of America that it starts paying off financially. “We’re lucky because technically we’re starting at the bottom. So anywhere for us, we can go to Wellington if we’re good enough, we can go to up to Auckland if we’re good enough.”Wrestling in Auckland is televised on a local T.V. channel. But first they must survive each other in the ring this Saturday at 6pm at the Marlborough Boys College Hall.

He grew up in Richmond and completed his building apprenticeship locally, starting his own building company at the ripe age of 21. His first venture was successful, building around 20 houses a year, and the skills he gained both in house construction and business ownership meant he was well placed when he moved on to bigger things with Jennian Homes. His building background and understanding of the industry have been fundamental in the growth and success of the Nelson Bays branch of Jennian Homes, and it’s not difficult to see how they have gained acclaim from the industry, their peers and their customers. To see what a completed Jennian Home looks like, you can visit their show home at 3 Daelyn Rd. Built in 2009, the home demonstrates one of the most popular house designs, which can be altered as you will to suit your vision of your perfect new home. WAKEFIELD COMMUNITY COUNCIL REPORT“Window on Wakefield” in the Waimea Weekly, was a great success - thanks to Sonia Emerson for her colla-tion of the community news for it. We had a well at-tended meeting in November, with some discussion of roading and signage around Wakefield. We were de-lighted the Council has provided repainted entry signs to the South of the Village. We addressed the need for a rubbish tin near the BMX track and issues re weeding the area. Police mentioned that cycling along the foot-paths is not legal and cyclists should stay off them. As always the danger to pedestrians and cyclists on the now very busy Church Hill Corner was raised. The painting of new white-lines is a priority, as is the placement of signs for both motorists to slow down, and for foot and bike traffic to take a detour up through the church foot-path rather than risk the road. At the Village Green, this council - is volunteering to clean and paint the bollards holding the chains around the green, and the informa-tion board update appears imminent!! Spooner’s Range lookout has multiple ownership, but we are requesting they work together to reinstate the view we once had from there. We would value new members of the Com-munity Council, and the next meeting will be at St Johns Worship Centre at 7.30pm on Tuesday 13 December. Councillors reminded us that roading and grasscutting etc is on a constantly reducing national budget, which we will have to adjust to. Policing was also discussed and we heard that the 24 hour police centre at Rich-mond is now based back in Nelson. Allan Wasley, Chair

WORSHIP SERVICES AND UPCOMING EVENTSIf you’re in Wakefield or Brightwater, for a relaxed, friendly, social meal you couldn’t do better than the monthly get together at the Worship Centre at St. John’s Anglican Church in Wakefield. This event takes place the third Thursday of every month at midday. This past year the occasional pirate showed up at the meal, and the last lunch of the year was a beautiful High Tea with all the trimmings. But generally we just lay on hearty, seasonal meals you’ll enjoy bringing your friends along to. A gold coin donation is good. Meals start up again in the new year with the first meal on February 16. Make it a date!

FAMILY PICNIC - St John’s family picnic is being held at Rabbit Island on Sunday 11 December at 1pm - All welcome. If you would like to come along phone Brenda 541 9413 or just turn up at 12pm on the day.

Just bring yourselves, and if you can

afford it, a gold coin donation towards the feed. Lets make it a real village Christmas Celebration for the kids and the whole family!! (Organised by the combined churches of Wakefield).

WAKEFIELD HEALTH CENTRE WAKEFIELD CONTINUES TO PRODUCE TOP

TENNIS PLAYERSTennis in Wakefield dates back to the 1880’s. There have been various courts and clubs formed and re-located over the decades and often in the early days would involve the social gathering of tennis players for afternoon tea and a game of tennis.

THE WAKEFIELD TENNIS CLUB The Wakefield Tennis Club is again seeing a surge of activity and is still being seen as a social gather-ing for tennis players including 60-70 school aged kids enjoying a BBQ together most Friday afternoons, commencing annual home and away matches against Golden Bay Tennis Club and is also producing some of the best players that Nelson Bays has to offer.Ash Calder is currently number one woman in the Nelson Region and travels to Wellington and Auck-land most weekends. Alex Hunt is the number one senior man, and he also travels to Wellington for in-terclub. Monique Hore won the girls Nelson Primary School tournament and Jordan Berry came a close second. Monique travelled to the South Island Prima-ry Schools finals in Timaru. Marshall Hore won the Boys 8u Nelson Bays Grasshoppers tournament last week and Sam Smith received the Fair Play Award.

Ngaire Calder is the Head Coach at the Wakefield Tennis Club, and has been the key driving force behind the success of these local players mentioned above. She is successfully implement-ing the Grass Hoppers in Schools programme at Wakefield Primary which is proving very successful for all involved. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those volun-teers who gave up their spare time on Sunday at a working bee at the club where we started to paint the clubrooms. We would also like to thank the TDC and Fulton Hogan for pro-viding the means and the funding towards the much needed resurfacing of three tennis courts at our club, which will be completed the first week of December. So as we go into the summer months, why not dust off your racquet and come and see what your local tennis club has to offer, we would love to see you at one of the following weekly events:Social Club Night on Thursdays, 4:00-5:30 for Juniors, 6:00-8:00 for Seniors, organised group coaching on Fridays, 1:30pm for Adults, from 3pm for Students, family day on Sundays 1:00-3:00.

Marshall Hore is pictured attending tennis training ses-sions at Wakefield Tennis Club.

Waimea serve up double goldWaimea College is the first school in 20 years to claim the junior boys and girls titles in the same year, at the South Island Secondary School Junior Championship last week. The two championship victories were made even sweeter thanks to the outstanding performances by the two year nine teams. The year 9 girls finished third, claiming bronze, while the boys were the only year nine team in the top 16 and finished a respectable eighth place. The year 10 girls’ success caps off a perfect run in 2011 where they didn’t lose a single game. The year 10 boys met rivals Nelson College in the final and beat them in straight sets, 25-16 and 25-21. The result turned the tide following a loss in qualifying for the tournament. Coach Peter Malthus says Nelson College cracked under the pressure. “Our boys served too well and hit too well. We had some stunning floor d[efence]. It was pretty impressive all round,” he says. Caleb Laing was the star of the show for Waimea, while Hugh Hendrickson and Justin Wehner showed plenty of strengths on the court. This was also the first time all season that Waimea College were able to field a full strength side. “It’s like having Richie McCaw but not having Dan Carter on the court. But finally in the final we had Richie and Dan.”The year 10 girls edged Nelson College for Girls in two very close sets, 25-22, 25-20, to win the girls division.Britanni Harrington showed class throughout the tournament. “They were very skillful and very focussed. Their serving and floor d was outstanding. They’re not a tall team, but they work around that.”Peter says the success proves volleyball has grown a certain culture throughout the school. “The year 9 team did really well because they’re obviously only year 9, so to finish third in the girls division, they’re a really good prospect for next year. The older players are always helping the younger players. We’re lucky that we’ve got some very good coaches. We’ve got more coaches than the other schools now and that makes a bit of a difference.”

Phillip Rollo

GOLDEN GENERATION: Volleyball is at an all-time high at Waimea College and the year 10 boys and girls teams are evidence of that, claiming the South Island Secondary School Junior titles. The year 9 girls also finished third. It was the first time in 20 years one school has won both divisions. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

November has generally been a month of missed fishing weekends due to windy weather which is typical for this time of year. Hopefully the weather will start to improve and looking at the long range forecast for this weekend, fine with light winds, boat ramps around the re-gion should see plenty of action. The water temperature is on the rise in Tasman Bay and fast approaching 18 degrees. If this continues the snapper will possibly start spawning in the next few weeks. There have been good snapper caught in the middle of the bay and once the fish spawn the slightly bigger fish will move in closer to shore, just in time for the holidays. Large schools of kahawai have been seen in the cut this week, and it would be well worth while to start trolling the Boulder Bank for kingfish from now on. Kenepuru has produced some large snapper in the last 2 weeks but fishing is still quite patchy. The Marlborough Sounds Area opens this month for Blue Cod on December the

20th. Below are rules pertaining to this area that everyone should be aware of when fishing there. Marlborough Sounds Area: This area will be closed to blue cod fishing for another two weeks, until 19 December (inclusive) each year to protect the core spawning season. For more information on the new rules and how they protect blue cod for future generations to enjoy, go to www.fish.govt.nz.

This week’s picture features Kaleb McKay with a fearsome looking barracoutta caught in the Kenepuru last week. Not the snapper he was hoping for, but a good fight all the same.

Tapawera Area School Primary School Athletics Day dawned cool and with the occasional rain occurring it kept people moving along between events. This event organised by teacher Kirsty Griffith was for students from Year 0-8, in age group events. Usually in the past we have made use of the senior secondary students to run the events but they were off doing NCEA exams so we instead used the Year 9-10 students. It was the fourth time that Lake Rotoiti Primary

School had been invited to join the athletics day and principal Giles Panting was thrilled to have his students at the event. “It was a great day for our students.” Lake Rotoiti School brought along most of the school, including parents and the school’s staff. It was an opportunity to provide some challenging opposition for the smaller school while introducing new blood into the different age groups in the Tapawera competition.

Roy’s OddyseyRoy Oddy’s blood is definitely red.The 79 year-old is set to be honoured with a Lifetime Contribution to Sport award at the NZCT Nelson Sport-sperson of the Year award ceremony tonight, following a life creating the legacy of Richmond Athletic AFC.Roy was a centre-half for Nelson Ath-letic when the 4-2-4 formation was popular, three years after shifting from the UK to New Zealand. The club, which only had one sen-ior team, played its home matches at Victory Square, before amalgamating with Richmond, which only had jun-ior teams. Roy hung up his boots when he was 40 years-old, before moving in to the presidential role at Richmond Athlet-ic, a spot he would hold for 24 years between 1964 and 1988, although he wasn’t president by choice. “They had an AGM and I didnt go, so I was voted president. It just came out of the blue, so I just stuck to it,” he says. But Roy enjoyed every minute of it and has made “hundreds of friends”.Roy has done everything for Rich-mond. He helped build the men’s toi-lets when a player/brick-layer left the region and the job half done. He built the goal posts and put them up every weekend. He was president of the club when the clubrooms were bought off the council for $10,000 in 1982, but he didn’t take part in the construction. “They told me to keep away,” he says.“When we first came to Richmond they didn’t have a changing room or a toilet. They had a long-drop in the corner. That was our toilet. I made the goal posts. We had to get the steel from different places. I used to dig the holes every year, but we always had troubles with the athletics track going around. It’d kill the bloody grass. But these grounds are marvelous now.”Roy always had a dog alongside him, and nowa-days it’s his lab, Jazz.Roy remembers Richmond’s most famous result, a Chatham Cup win over the Greek influenced Wellington Olympic AFC. Richmond won 1-0 to cement a spot in the quarter finals against Mi-rarmar Rangers. But they were pumped 9-0. “So that was the end of it. But that was the only time we’ve got that far in the Chatham Cup.”Although, he was in the stands at Saxton Field when Richmond Athletic stunned rivals Nelson Suburbs in the second round of the 2011 edition of the tournament. He also recalled watching All White Jeremy Brockie and Team Wellington midfielder Mike White playing as juniors at the club. The pair are two of the most talented players to ever come out of the club. Roy is at Jubilee Park every week watching the boys and was proud to see them win another Nelson Pine Industries Men’s First Division title this year.Despite the controversial choice not to challenge for Robbie’s Premier League promotion, due to financial reasons, Roy clearly understood the sit-uation, saying the club has always relied heavily on sponsorship to survive. “We’ve always been short on money, but we’ve got through the tough times.”

While he is sad to see captain Joe Green destined for Nelson Suburbs and coach Steve Bignall leaving for FC Nelson, Roy says there’s always another star around the corner. “We’re virtually starting new. It’s sad in one way [not to challenge for promotion] because we’re not going to get the better class games. But on the other hand it’s a bugger raising all the money all the time. We used to run raffles every week just to have the strip washed and to get a couple of chooks. But now we’re talking thousands of dollars.”He has always been a one man club, since arriv-ing in New Zealand. When he played his football in Manchester on a Saturday, he never had time to go watch any of the top flight teams play. Un-til flood lights were introduced bringing football to Wednesday nights. He had five different clubs within five miles that he could go watch, so he never had the chance to support just one team. But ever since he joined Richmond Athletic, he’s been red ever since. “[The club] is my life really. The wife was sick of me every night going out training or coming out here. Half the time she used to wash the strip because you’d say ‘righto you take the strip one week a piece boys.’ But there would still be some on the floor, so I had to take them home for the wife to wash.”He can’t understand why players chop and change clubs each season, because as he puts it, he will die a Richmond boy. In fact, it’s in his will to have his ashes scattered on the football pitch. “I know quite a few boys who go and play for United or Suburbs, but it disappoints you. You wonder why they need to go, because we treat them all well. I only support one club.”Roy says he is humbled to be receiving the award for his contribution to Richmond football.

Rowan Dron is heading to Mur-chison to installing My Freeview, HD digital television. And the best news is, right now he won’t be charging mileage to Murchison customers, so if you’ve been think-ing of installing My Freeview now is a perfect time to do it. Rowan offers a choice of great deals depending on your individual re-quirements. Three different instal-lation options are available and all options come with a new satellite dish, cabling and all labour and GST included. ‘The range of re-ceivers available locally is increas-ing all of the time so now there is quite a variety to choose from,’ says Rowan. ‘Not everyone needs all of the technology that the top end op-tions offer and will find the less ex-pensive models will be more than sufficient. I’m happy to come and have a chat about what you need and recommend the best options for you.’ Rowan’s deals start at $500 which includes an entry level record-able, NZ made Freeview receiver through to an $850 package which includes a “MY FREEVIEW” HD

satellite receiver. When the digital switch over takes place the current free-to-air ana-logue signals are switched off and New Zealand will move to digi-tal only television transmission. Freeview is the only way you can continue to get free TV and Rowan can look after the transfer for you. Because Rowan is a qualified and registered electrician he offers a complete package from a simple switch over for your current televi-sion, right through to installation of new TV’s, audio systems or home theatre packages, even installing new power points if you need them. Rowan will arrange for the transfer to Freeview to be a simple process and you won’t need to replace your current television set. There are no monthly fees and no contracts to access Freeview and you will be able to watch programmes with crystal clear digital quality and sound. With MyFreeview you’ll be in control of your TV viewing and will be able to pause, record and re-play live TV to fit around your busy schedule. Phone Rowan today and he’ll get it all sorted for you.

If you are looking for something different to the same old Christmas decorations that line the shelves of retail stores then you should definitely make a trip out to visit Cate Bacon at the Flip Side Barn Shop. At The Flip Side Barn Shop you’ll find many alternatives to the commercial and mass produced items available every year. Cate’s decorations have a natural focus – like thin slices of translucent rock - and include a range of kitsets that you can take home to create your own masterpiece. You’ll find kits ideal for children such as snow globes; packs to make your own photographic decorations; and a kitset wreath. You can buy the wreath and take it home or you can select from a range of ideas.Cate and Frank Bacon purchased the lifestyle property five years ago and wanted to create a property with an organic focus. The existing orchard of apricots, plums and various fruit trees was extended to include figs, lemons and crops of lavender (which Cate uses to make

the oils, room sprays and soaps available in the shop) and saffron (the entire saffron crop is presold every year)Sadly, Frank passed away two years ago, but Cate’s boundless enthusiasm, energy and determination, combined with a lot of hard work have seen her

realise their dream. A selection of Cate’s own artwork is available in the shop together with pieces from other local craftspeople. If you are looking for a Christmas gift with a difference check out the sculptures, wooden products, three dimensional pictures,

rock specimens and lavender products. Produce, hanging baskets, eco-friendly crystals and plants are also available.Cate also has a selection of Christmas trees growing on the property and you can buy a pre-cut tree or take a wander amongst them and select your own.tree. If you are unable to visit during the weekend Cate will be opening this Wednesday and Thursday evening for sales of pre-cut trees.

Looking for Something Different this Christmas?

Cate Bacon.

Round two of the ELF Super Cup wasn’t any sweeter for Nel-son’s super saloon drivers.Nelson’s top two challengers, Ian Burson and Shane Carey, surren-dered to the middle of the track before the night’s end, handing victory to the impressive Josh Boulton.Shane showed form of old as he demanded his way to the front of the 16-car field, sitting in second place during the 25-lap thriller. But losing a wheel on lap 17 dented his chances of catching the Christchurch driver and his night was over. The final race of the night was

not short on drama with four restarts keeping the crowd nerv-ous.But Josh wasn’t to be denied, fin-ishing ahead of Kane Lawson, Ray Stewart, Richie Taylor and lone Nelson survivor Mark Car-ey across the line. The ELF Super Cup has three rounds remaining, in Christch-urch and Dunedin with the final scheduled round for Cromwell.Nelson speedway resumes in two week’s time on December 17 with the Xmas Xtravaganza, featuring the club championships for side-cars and superstocks, round two of the TQ midget champs and a hit-to-pass promotion for stock-cars.

Wizards pull one out of the hat

Phillip Rollo

Steering down the barrel of a 249 run chase, Waimea College Wiz-ards showed plenty of promise to claim a four wicket victory over Nayland College at Greenmeadows on Saturday.Nayland won the toss and elected to bat and off 43 overs they were all

out for a credible 248 runs, thanks to their captain Angus Riley who made 112 not out. The Wizards were convinced that they would not even get near Nay-land’s total but a series of well-con-structed partnerships saw them catch the target after 43 overs.
