FEATURED SPEAKERS

Michael Botticelli is one of the nation's leading addiction experts, and served as the Directorof National Drug Control Policy at the White House under President Obama. He was the firstperson to hold the position who was also in long-term recovery from a substance usedisorder and who came from a public health background. Mr. Botticelli previously served as Director of the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services at theMassachusetts Department of Public Health. He has served in a variety of leadership rolesfor the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors. He was a member ofthe Advisory Committee for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health ServicesAdministration's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the National Action Alliance forSuicide Prevention. He has also co-authored many peer-reviewed articles that havesignificantly contributed to the field. Born in Upstate New York, Mr. Botticelli holds aBachelor of Arts degree from Siena College and a Master of Education degree from St.Lawrence University.

Presidents AwardEstablished in 1983, the Massachusetts Health Officers Association (MHOA) President’s Award recognizes anindividual who has been a "champion of public health" throughout his or her career. The recipient has made asuperior and lasting contribution to public health in Massachusetts, providing dedicated service to the membersand officers of MHOA and generously offering his or her time and talents. Our organization's highest honor, thisaward salutes an outstanding individual whose commitment, dedication, and contributions set an example forthe entire public health community in Massachusetts and beyond.

John D. Crowley AwardIn honor of the late John D. Crowley, who served the City of Cambridge as Executive Health Agent and amember of the Health Department for over 50 years. He rendered distinguished service to the MassachusettsHealth Officers Association as a founder of the Metropolitan Health Officers Association and served assecretary for many years. This award is given annually to a regular member of the Massachusetts HealthOfficers Association, who contributed to the growth and success of the Massachusetts Health OfficersAssociation through outstanding leadership and extraordinary service.

Curtis H. Hillard AwardIn honor of the late Curtis M. Hilliard, one of the founders of the Metropolitan Health Officers Association, whichlater became the Massachusetts Health Officers Association. He was Health Supervisor for Wellesley,Needham and Weston from 1926-1956. He was recognized with honors from the Massachusetts HealthOfficers Association, American Public Health Association, and Massachusetts Public Health Association. Thisis awarded annually to a citizen of the Commonwealth who has demonstrated his/her concern for theadvancement of public health programs to the benefit of citizens, of which it is their right to expect, and hasassisted in the delivery of health services and programs to fulfill these expectations.

Michael D. Saraco AwardIn honor of the late Michael D. Saraco, who was instrumental in the formation of the Board of Certification ofHealth Officers and was appointed by the Governor to serve on that Board for eight years. He was dedicatedto the Massachusetts Health Officers Association since its inception, and served as its President and ExecutiveSecretary. He was involved with many civic associations and served on numerous health committees and taskforces in Massachusetts. This award is presented annually to a member of the Massachusetts Health OfficersAssociation who has exemplified the qualities of the man for whom it was named. Through Mike’s dedication,loyalty, friendship, enthusiasm and leadership, the Massachusetts Health Officers Association has grown to bethe most prestigious and leading organization of Public Health in Massachusetts.

Public Health Nurse AwardThis award is presented annually to a Public Health Nurse who has demonstrated exceptional dedication incarrying out the public health mandates of a regional or local municipal agency.
