Today’s Readings

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"The leprosy left him at once and he

was cured." First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46 Although hygiene was a concern, the reason a leper or other skin-diseased person was religiously or socially ostracized was their consequent lack of bodily integrity thought to be necessary for worship. Second Reading: I Corinthians 10:31-11:1 The community needs to have a missionary mindset. Paul’s lifestyle he admits must mirror Christ’s own, inasmuch as his Corinthian community members never saw Christ. Gospel: Mark 1:40-45 Biblical “leprosy” was not the disease as we know it today. Rather, it referred to any “repulsive skin disorder.” The victim in this scene benefits that Jesus was “moved with pity.” Yet, the cured man’s misplaced story-telling took away Jesus’ anonymity.

The Word This Week

Thankfully, we do not encounter leprosy in our

culture. It can therefore be difficult to enter into the

real depth of today’s

readings. We have to

understand that leprosy

meant exclusion, rejection

and the end of “normal” life.

For your leprosy to be cured

would be like being given a

second chance at life. What

is the cause of exclusion and

rejection in our society – or

even in the Church? Who are

those who must “live apart”? And how can we put

into effect in our day those most touching of the

words of Jesus, when asked if he wants to cure the

leper: “Of course I want to!”? Contemplating

exclusion and rejection in our world can be hard work:

Saint Paul guides the way: the Christian path is not to

work “for my own advantage, but for the advantage of

everybody else”.

Thank you for supporting our parish!

Inspiration

With respect, admiration and thankfulness we pray for those who are currently serving around the world and those to be deployed in the near future in defense of our nation.

Together, We Change Lives

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who made a commitment to the 2015 Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). To date, 132 of our 1,036 parish families have responded. However, we need the support of all members of Visitation if we are to be successful in reaching our parish goal of $72,415.00.

Now is the time to make a return to the Lord for all He has given us. Even a small gift can make a big difference in the lives of those in need. Whether your gift is $50, $365, $1,000 or even $5,000, it is truly impactful and appreciated. If you have not yet responded to the 2015 ABCD, please consider making a gift—a gift from the heart—by using the pledge envelopes available in the pews or by making a gift online at www.isupportabcd.org. Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it! God bless you!

Sixth Sunday in

Ordinary Time

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

They say (whoever “they” are) that only people aged sixty and over make up the demographic of those who still faithfully watch the network evening news. Cable and the ever-present internet have apparently ended the long-running monopoly of the “Big Three” networks at that dinner time slot. (“FYI”, this writer, by dint of birthdays and conditioning, is a watcher.) Naturally, the makers of medicine try their best to sell their pills and potions during these nightly programs. Skin cures included. Check me out.

Our general cultural obsession with youth and comeliness feeds right into the popularity of such products, especially those of the “beauty” label. The cosmetic cover-ups for the unstoppable aging process are not limited in appeal to one gender. One could write a thesis on our national preoccupation with external perfection as opposed to the internal kind.

All of that said, Our Lord’s tender cure of a leper is the kind of thing Sun society would celebrate. In Christ’s time, such a cure would readmit the person to society from his/her forced exile and more importantly to community worship, a most treasured component of life.

Certain spiritual writers have waxed eloquent about the “leprosy” of sin on the soul, a

worthwhile teaching metaphor. But I prefer to focus on the compassion of Jesus in such scenes. He well knew the prescriptions of Leviticus we hear today. And He would respect the intentions of the lawmakers based on their primitive medical knowledge. Yet He could look beyond the codified exile such laws imposed on the victims to consider the deeper implications of the penalties on them, namely shame and isolation.

Lent 2015 begins this coming Wednesday with its ancient physical symbol of ashes on the forehead. A chief component of a well-lived Lent is repentance for past sins and a resolve to change. As we face the uncomfortable facts in our past, we can be tempted to judge ourselves “wretched,” as the hymn “Amazing Grace” puts it. It is more than comforting to me to realize in Lent that my just Judge was once “moved with pity” for the plight of this unnamed begging leper. That kind of good news can

brighten all of our days and nights as believing Christians. And, as one writer put it: “The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.”
