6 th Grade Independent Reading Portfolio Dear 6 th graders, For your end of the year reading project, you need to assemble a “reading portfolio” with the following items inside: 1)Your RNB 2) Your Booklist and mini reviews (this packet) 3) 10 Book reports (see below) You will need to choose 10 books out of the 40 just-right books you have read this year for your book reports. Dear 6th graders,

For your end of the year reading project, you need to assemble a “reading portfolio” with the following items inside:

1) Your RNB2) Your Booklist and mini reviews (this packet)3) 10 Book reports (see below)

You will need to choose 10 books out of the 40 just-right books you have read this year for your book reports. Your book reports can be in any of the following formats. You need to have at least 3 different formats for your 10 book reports. Have fun!

25 Book Report Alternatives (from Scholastic.com: “Classroom Activities: 25 Book Report Alternatives”)

1. Write a letter to the main character and the character’s reply.

2. Write a different ending for the book.

3. Pretend you are a talk show host and interview the main character.

4. Create a travel brochure for the setting of the story and scrapbook pages about key characters.

5. Create a book jacket, including illustration, synopsis, author bio, and favorable reviews.

6. Summarize the book into a comic or story aimed for younger students or your classmates.

7. Write a news article about an important event from the book.

8. Would you make the same decisions if you were the main character in the book? Write a reflection or essay.

9. Dramatize a scene from the story with your classmates or using puppets. Make a video out of it. You are free to use Ms. Tu’s Flip Camera.

10. Write a publishable online Book Review. You can go to amazon.com, bn.com or goodreads.com for samples.

11. Choose two characters from the story and write a conversation they might have.

12.Write a letter or email to a close friend recommending the book you read.

13.Make a list of new, unusual, or interesting words or phrases found in your book.

14.Prepare a television commercial about your book. Act out the commercial and video-tape it. Ms. Tu will share the video in class.

15.Write an essay explaining why you think this book will or will not be read 100 years from now. Support your opinion by stating specific events in the story.

16.Write about one particular episode in the story that you remember most. Describe why you think it remains so clear to you. Add illustrations if you want to.

17.Write a letter/email to the author of your book.

18.Writ e a ballad or song about the characters and events in your story (or nonfiction book!) Set the words to the music of a popular song and sing it to the class.

19.Record a dramatic reading of a scene.

20.Make “facebook” type profile (in details!) for three characters in the story. List reasons why you would or wouldn’t want to get to know these people.

21.Design a mini-poster or new book cover depicting the climax of the story.

22.Write three poems about the book from three different points of views (first person/third person limited/third person omniscient).

23.For nonfiction/informational books: Make a scrapbook about the topics.

24.For poetry books: Choose one poem you like the most from the book and respond to the poem by writing your own poem. Provide illustration if you want.

25.For biographies/autobiographies/memoirs, write a news article about an event in the book, as written in real time.
