Hot Spots create a mid-life crisis? Premature end-of-life for the data center.
Hot Spots
6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15th – 17th November 2011
Why is there stranded capacity?
• IT operation decisions have engineering impact on:• Efficiency (increased Opex through energy costs)• Resilience (increased risk of thermal downtime)• Longevity (increase in Capex caused by stranded capacity)
• Causes:• IT Deployment decisions do not take into account the engineering
impact of operational decisions• IT Deployment decisions do not consider air flow/cooling management
6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15th – 17th November 2011
Lack of Airflow Management
• Did you know that all mission critical facilities lose more than 30% of their data center capacity because of hotspots?• Why?• IT Equipment is air cooled• There are no standards for cooling
design of IT Equipment.• IT equipment designs change over time.• IT equipment deployment changes over
time.• Data Center cooling infrastructure is
fixed over its lifetime.• The owner/operator has the
responsibility to deliver sufficient airflow and cooling to every piece of IT equipment at all times.

Capacity planning is impossible without airflow management
Same equipment, one works... one fails.
