A comprehensive rangeof exploration rigsThe Diamec range comprises fiveexploration rigs. The smallest, theDiamec 232, is designed for shortholes up to 120 m deep. The latestedition is the Diamec U4 for drillingholes up to 500 m. The Diamec U6 isavailable in two versions a standardversion and a deep hole version forholes up to 1 000 m. Finally, youllfind the Diamec U8 for holes up to2 000 m deep at the top of the range.

Meeting customer needsThe Diamec range of core drill rigscan be operated in a multitude ofapplications. They can be used above

Moving into positionWhile its easy set up these rigs andmove them into place with the stan-dard skid-chassis, the unique optionalAtlas Copco crawler system makeslight work of the larger rigs. This

powered crawler moves the rig into place without the aid of any othervehicle. And all the modules aremounted on-board, keeping dirt anddust at bay.

Drill in any directionAs the size and height of drill sitesvary, Diamec rigs are equippedwith standard feed frames of 1 800 mm,while a short version of 850 mm isavailable for tighter sites. Whetheryou want to drill vertically upwards,downwards or horizontally, Diamecrigs solve your problem. With just one

operator at the controls, the unique positioner arm moves the feeder frameto the angle of your choice, facilitatinga new drilling position quickly andeasily.

Making work easierAt Atlas Copco we make our rigs asuser-friendly as possible. Based on ourexperience of underground drifting

rigs, the Automatic PerformanceControl system (APC) helps increasedrilling productivity. Thanks to APC,all the operator needs to do is set thedrilling parameters the rest is doneautomatically. This unique optionmeans maximum rig performance andservice life of the in-the-hole, (ITH)equipment and more time to work,for example, with the core samples.

Diamec U4 the latest member of the range

Diamec U4, our most recent additionto the range, is based on the triedand tested Diamec U6 rig. Its verycompact and powerful for its sizeand easy to set up. Ideal for bothunderground and surface drilling, itcan be equipped with a long or shortfeed frame and wire line equipment.The push-equals-pull feed cylinderalso allows for maximum capac-ity uphole and downhole drilling.Diamec U4 is ideal for both con-ventional and wire line drilling andusing A-sized ITH tools it reaches asdeep as 500 meters.

Diamec U6 and U6DH reaching down to 1 000 m

Diamec U6 is a truly flexible explora-tion rig, drilling up to 1 000 m withboth A-size and B-size ITH tools.(The later, thanks to the DiamecU6DHs more powerful feed cylinder.)

They are both at home in under-ground and surface exploration.Theres also a wide choice ofequipment available, includingtwo feed frames, four rotation units,two chassis models and two types

of control systems. This powerfuland compact rig has become verypopular amongst those wanting todrill deep and large holes.

The unique positioner allows youto move the feed frame through180. The operator wont need anyhelp setting up the right drillingangle be it vertical, horizontal or inbetween.

The Diamec U8 is a true deep holeexploration rig. Its quite simplythe most powerful exploration rigfor its size on the market today.At home both above and belowground, the Diamec U8 can drillup to 2 000 m.

Frequently operating for weekson end with the same bore hole,its imperative that the rig keepsrunning efficiently. Heres wherethe Automatic Performance System(APC)* comes into its own. Automatic Performance Control (APC) a computerized rig supervisor

Your drilling supervisorWith APC, the drilling operationis supervised by a computer. Onceyouve entered the key parameters,the APC computer assumes control inorder to maintain a constant penetra-tion rate. The system reacts instantly tothe slightest change in rock formation,adjusting feed force, or torque accord-ingly. It can even shut down the rigif necessary.

A real one-man operationWhether its a Diamec U4, U6 or U8,one operator on the job is enough. Infact, this system is so user-friendlythat both experienced and less experi-enced drillers can get the best out of a

Diamec rig. And while the rig handlesthe drilling, the operator can check the

core samples or carry out other main-tenance work. APC provides efficientrod handling, improved bit life, lesscore blockage and minimum deviation.

Not to mention fewer human errors.

Touch screen computerAPC uses the latest in computer tech-nology. Based on Atlas Copcos field-

proven RCS-technology, APC is themost user-friendly and efficient systemon the market today. All relevant infor-mation is displayed on a touch screenthat enables the selection of the right

parameters. Theres a separate menufor drilling, rod running and wire lineoperation. Whats more, theres a built-in operators manual and if need be

a manual override.

All the operating data is saved anddiagnosed, or can be downloaded onto

a USB memory stick for future analy-sis by external computers.

Feed frameThe feed frame is the backbone of thedrill rig. This robust system uses adirect feed cylinder with push-equals-

pull characteristics. This means therig can drill uphole just as easily asdownhole while having better con-trol of the drilling process. It alsofacilitates rod handling. There are nochains, sprockets or shafts that needadjusting and self-centering slide shoesensure straighter holes.

To up safety, the feed frame isequipped with a special guard that pre-vents anything from getting in the wayof the moving parts.

Rod holderPlaced at the base of the feed frame,the rod holder uses the latest in gasspring technology. A gas cartridgeensures high clamping force while the

machines hydraulics open the holder.This safety measure means the rod is

always clamped in place when the rig isshutdown. This extremely reliable hold-er has a seal life of 1 000 000 cyclesand is easily serviced or replaced.For extra safety, the gas pressure ismonitored from the rigs control panel.Furthermore, as it features fewer partsthan competing systems, youre lookingat a lot less maintenance.

Rotation unitThese units are the muscles of the rig.Depending on the size and applicationof the rigs, theres a unit to fit the job.Each model is designed with oversized

bearings to increase reliability. Thegear case is thoroughly sealed to handle

In fact, today we surpassthe rigorous standards laid down bythe European safety organization, CE.For example all our rigs are equippedwith a feed frame guard as standardthat helps to minimize the risk of acci-dents for the operator.

PositionerOnly available on the Diamec U4and U6, this unique positioner sys-

tem facilitates movement of the feedframe through 180. With the aid oflevers, the synchronized dual hydrau-lic cylinders move the feed frame fromvertically downwards all the way upto vertically upwards and theres noneed to move the wire line winch. Thisingenious device ensures exact liningup to existing holes.

A turntable is also available for easierhorizontal adjustment on the DiamecU4 and U6 models.

Power unitsAtlas Copco offers electrical or dieseldriven power units, depending uponthe type of site. In general, Diamecrigs use a dual hydraulic pump system,a main pump and a service pump.These two pumps split the supply of

power to the various hydrualic unitsthus optimizing performance. They

are also generously dimensioned.The Diamec U8 is equipped witha triple-pump power unit.
