    Graduate Studies at UWindsor

    UWindsor is a student-centred universitythat takes great pride in enabling people tomake a better world through education,scholarship, research and engagement.

    The University of Windsor began asAssumption College in 1857. It is a non-denominational, medium sized,comprehensive institution.

    Approximately 16,500 undergraduate andgraduate students attend programs asdiverse as business, engineering, arts andsocial sciences, education, natural andhuman sciences, law and nursing.

    The University is entering its most ambitiouscapital expansion since 1963. As part of thisexpansion, with the help of $40 million inOntario government funding, and a matchingamount from the federal government, theUniversity has built the 300,000-sq. ft.,$112-million Ed Lumley Centre forEngineering Innovation (CEI), a structure thatwill establish revolutionary design standards

    Graduate assistantships (GAs)

    What is a GA?

    A graduate assistantship (GA) is a stipendpaid to a student to assist with the teachingneeds of the department. This can includehelping a professor with an undergraduateclass, lab or tutorial.

    Who is eligible?

    Full-time students in most programs.GAs are allocated by the departments.

    What is the value of a GA?

    The current value of a GA is $4,911.20for Masters students and $5,472.60 forPhD students for 140 hours of work persemester.

    Other funding opportunities

    Research assistantship funding isavailable in many departments wherefaculty members hold external researchgrants. The amount of funding variesfrom program to program. For furtherinformation, contact the relevant program.

    Students may also be eligible for research

    internship funding opportunities throughprograms such as Connect Canada(www.connectcanadainternships.ca)and Mitacs (www.mitacs.ca).

    Graduate entrance scholarships

    Who is eligible?

    Students who have achieved a first-classstanding (80% North American equivalent)entering a full-time eligible Masters or PhDprogram may be considered for these awards.Offers are based on either your completedfour-year Bachelors degree if entering aMasters program, or your completed Mastersdegree if entering a PhD program.

    Scholarships, Awards and Costs

    Applicants wishing to be considered for entrance scholarships must applyby the specified deadline. Refer to www.uwindsor.ca/grad for details.

    Early application is recommended inorder to be considered for financialsupport.

    A satisfactory score on an Englishproficiency test is required for applicants

    whose native language is not English.

    The Graduate Record Examination (GRE)and Graduate Management AssessmentTest (GMAT) scores are required forcertain graduate programs.

    Applicants whose academic credentialsare difficult to assess may be required towrite the GRE.

    Living in Windsor

    Residents enjoy 2,000 acres of parkland,including a riverfront recreational bike/rollerblading trail that begins at theAmbassador Bridge, approximatelyone block from UWindsor campus.

    Located along this trail, the OdetteSculpture Park is a display of large-scalesculptures that stretch for more than fivekilometres along the Detroit River.

    Close access to the US makes Windsorunique in Canada. The state of Michiganis just a few minutes away by tunnel orbridge. Here, you will find world-classmuseums, art galleries and historicallandmarks. For live entertainment, visitthe citys theatre district or take in majorleague sports including pro baseball,basketball, hockey and football.

    Transit Windsor offers public bustransportation in the Windsor area, andoffers shuttle service to Detroit, withspecial shuttles for sporting events.

    The city of Windsor is also situatedclose to Pelee Island and Point Pelee,the most southerly point of land inCanada, popular among recreation- andnature-minded locals. You can visitthese beautiful areas for a chance to seeextraordinary migratory birds, monarchbutterflies and second-to-none sunsets.

    Housing costs in Windsor comparefavourably in affordability with the restof Canada. The average cost to rent aone-bedroom apartment in Windsor isapproximately $650 per month.

    Windsor is located at the extremesouthwestern end of Ontario, at alatitude south of northern California,with mild weather to match.

    Country living can be had just a fewminutes drive away from the downtowncore and the UWindsor campus.
