One trip to the Abaco’s and one trip to the middle keys of Florida. Two club tournaments in two different weeks, what an awesome way to start the summer. I wanted to state, right out of the gate this month, that to have a life full of great memories, you need family and great friends with whom to build them. As you can tell from the photo to the right, my ASWSC friends had big fun in the Abacos (in this photo we’re goofing around at Pete’s Pub dock on the southern end of great Abaco Island). I’m really excited about this summer as the weather has been good so far (knock on wood) and we’ve got a number of fun events planned for the club. Tourna- ments, social get-togethers, the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run, and ASWSC friends just calling each other and choosing to “road trip” to scratch their fishing itch. I know many don’t think of themselves as writers or photographers but choose to shoot a few candid shots and write up a short article of your fishing forays for the club news. Your trips, experiences and stories are what makes great reading for those who are stuck at work or worse yet, stuck on dry land with no plans to go somewhere salty. Your willingness to dive in and meet people in the Saltwater Club is a great way to expand your network of fishy friends and improve your odds of getting invites to go fish. Of course, if you write and article about your trip, and you stuffed the holds full, members who own boats will be more impressed and likely to call you up to join them on their next trip. All it takes is a little self motivation and willingness to push your shyness aside. By the way, I’m sure there are not many shy members in the club so that’s a broad generalization on my part. I’d like to congratulate an impressive catch which occurred during our Abaco’s adventure. Laura Lazar caught her first blue marlin of her life. She has caught other billfish and is an accomplished angler, but this was her first blue. We estimated the fish at 104-108in (lower jaw to fork of tail) based upon the beam of my boat at the transom. That puts the fish in the 400-475 lbs range! Laura did an excellent job as the angler on this fish, Richard Watkins was on his game as the wireman (making sure to get his prized Bart Blue Break- fast Lure back) and Ben Lazar was a focused assistant to Laura making sure he had a firm grip on the back of the harness since we had Laura strapped to the rod. 30 mins is all this team needed to get the fish to the boat and released. A great experience, on a great trip with great friends. It just doesn’t get better than that! Tight Lines, Cap’n Keith 1

TOURNAMENT REPORT: COMBAT IN THE KEYS

By Dennis Daniel

The “Combat in the Keys” tournament started off in Islamorada with great weather after the previous week had been filled with an early season tropical storm, including tornados, water spouts, heavy rain and wind. Captain Rick Rodriguez of Sea Horse Charters spoke at the Captain’s meeting on Sunday night and offered us some good insight into current fishing conditions and suggestions on where to get started. We used Mon-day as a practice day and shared information on how Keys reef fishing for Yellow tail snapper differs greatly from red snapper strategy in the Gulf. We also spent Sunday and Monday scouting around for some great schools of tuna and Mahi. The Captains shared a good deal of information each day. It was really important that everyone have a great time and catch some fish while we were in the beautiful Florida Keys! When the tournament began on Tuesday the weather and fishing were excellent. Several teams limited out on Mahi several times during the week while catches of Tuna and snapper were impressive. Laura Daniel landed a Tuna in the 20+ pound range before the tournament began on Sunday, and lost a 50 pound class Mahi at the boat. Casey Trichel caught the biggest Yellow-Tail snapper of the tournament as it weighed in at a solid 3 pounds. The Keys are a great place for the Junior anglers to sharpen their skills. We were fortunate to have three very good Junior anglers in the Keys tournament and they all had a great time. All three of them should be recog-nized as they are all becoming quite accomplished with rod and reel. They were valued crew members and were critical to their teams’ overall success. The young Spencer men used their experience and seemed to adapt quickly to Keys fishing. Hannah Daniel, fishing in her first ASWSC event, was all over the boat help-ing out and was almost always the first of our crew to set the hook on another nice fish. During the week, most teams took time to do some activities other than fishing. The Trichel family took the big red Hydrasport up to John Pennekamp State Park one afternoon. Everyone took time to spend at least one

day in Key West and of course, the Daniel and Spencer ladies found multiple opportunities for shopping and sightseeing. In addition to the great fishing, there are many other opportunities for a good time in the Keys. Almost every restaurant in the Keys will cook your catch. We ate well all week!! Captain Matt Bellinger, with Bamboo Charters, does a daily fishing report that is broadcast throughout the Florida Keys. On Wednesday, he welcomed the Atlanta Saltwater Sportsman’s Club to Islamorada on the radio and mentioned several of the boats, captains, and crew mem-bers by name. That evening at the Outdoor World (Bass Pro Shop), an employee saw us wear-ing one of the tournament club shirts and said he heard about the club on the radio! In short, it was a great week and we look forward to another tournament in the Keys next year. Dennis Daniel

Cuatro de Mayo By Judy Kump

This is the event that was almost cancelled several times and moved 3 times. It started on Club Island—nope under water and a tree fell in the middle, then to Corn Hole Cove, last years Summer event, but water was too high to beach boats. Then the high winds and cold weather changed it all, we moved it to the Port Royale docks under cover, again too windy and cold. The Full Moon was tad warmer and the porch out of some of the wind. Thank you, Jace for keeping every-one up to date on all 3 moves and then could not make the event himself. It places second, 50 degrees, for the coldest event, in ASWSC Club history, only to be topped by 17 degrees, for a Jan. 1990 Striper Tourna-ment on Lake Lanier. It placed first for the “sardine rating”, for packing the most on The Full Moon, of 22 and second place went to Kurt Stotter’s son Matthew’s baby shower, we had 16 on it. As all Club events go, even though the weather was cold and wind was blow-ing misting rain, it never dampened the spirits of those attending. Steve Fritz got all the food and supplies, but was helping his folks pack and move to Calif. (we will

miss Gordon and O’Linda), we hate to see you go. Dan French and Phil Scarborough picked up the food and supplies from Steve and proceeded to get stuck in traf-fic on I-85 for more than a half hour, standing still. I am still not sure if Dan or Phil Scarborough was driv-ing, but many thanks goes to you for enduring the trip to get us all the food. Also thanks goes to Norm Bo-wen for volunteering to cook, the tamales. With hot tamales and cheese hot sauces, yummy deserts, none of us went hungry and our adult beverages help kept us warm, sort of. Our President, Keith got it all right, he brought and wore his foul weather boat gear and kept warm (??) and dry. I could not get many photos, since the boat was packed. I have got to say it is sure an event to remember. The next event is the Pirates Poker Run on Lake Lanier. Please see the section for it on our web site. Maybe in August or Sept., the water will be down enough to take our boats to one of the islands for our summer picnic event. See the next page for photos of Club Island and Corn Hole Cove, taken in June. It is looking like we may do a Sept. 14th summer picnic on Corn Hole Cove, as of some recent comment. The Christmas party is on Dec. 7th at the same place as last year, just a name change, the Mar-riot is NOW the Sonesta Gwinnette Place Atlanta. same great food, people, just a lot of remodeling eve-rywhere.

Living & Fishing in AbacoLiving & Fishing in AbacoLiving & Fishing in AbacoLiving & Fishing in Abaco by Skip Hudginsby Skip Hudginsby Skip Hudginsby Skip Hudgins

What's the best way to own a home on the ocean in the Bahamas? First you stop by the ASWSC booth at the Atlanta Boat Show! Well maybe not a such direct connection, but the ATL Saltwater Club certainly played a role in our having a home in Abaco. In 1991, we bought a Whaler for the lake. Also enjoyed saltwater fish-ing but not many chances to do it and little on water experience other than chartering until we walked by the booth at the boat show and joined up. From ‘91 to ‘96 we actively fished tournaments and soaked up the knowledge of members. Never forget how helpful members were in Atlanta (meetings, Henry Bishop's how to semi-nars before each tourney, etc) and during tournaments on the water. The learning curve accelerated with more charter boat fishing and multiple trips to Bahamas. Then a new business opportunity re-sulted in owning a lot on Great Guana Cay (home of Nipper's) in the Abacos. Construction started about a year later and we moved in October 2004. It was a process that was much easier than the nightmare we were anticipating.

What's it like living in a remote island in the Bahamas? We get asked that ques-tion a lot. There is a saying down here that "Abaco is not for sissies". There's some truth to that. You learn a level of self reliance that you don't need in the States. Things break. A lot. If you bring a part down from the US, you learn to bring 2. Power can be unreliable. So you have a generator house. Groceries can be scare. You learn which days the boat "reaches". Fuel prices keep going up. You curse a lot. Category 2 and 3 hurricanes. No cute re-sponse for this one. Lost our boat in Irene. Thank God for insurance. Any storm less than Category 2 is considered a nuisance that locals don't even care about.

AND we wouldn't change it for anything.

We live here about 8 months a year now. The weather is usually great. The water is beautiful, both on it and underneath. The fishing is good. In some months, like right now, it is great. But a major reason we like it so much is the people.

13

Page 14:  · 6/8/2008  · was too high to beach boats. Then the high winds and cold weather changed it all, we moved it to the Port Royale docks under cover, again too windy and cold. The

The Bahamians in the Out Islands are some of the nicest folks around. Think Ireland. Our second home-owner friends are friends for life. Never had better friends in US. People who will literally do anything for you. Fishing the ASWSC Abaco tournament 2013. Your club officers have picked a great time to come to Abaco. Weather is consistently good. Water is warm, probably about 80. It is prime fishing time, especially for billfish. If January is a time you can catch a sail in Palm Beach, June is your chance for a

blue and white marlin in Abaco. There's a reason that 3 big sport fishing tournaments are going on around the same time as our tournament. And the run to lines first in is about 10 top 15 minutes. In addition to bill-fish, dolphin should still be here. Some yellowfin and more blackfin tuna will be here. An occasional wa-hoo is possible. We caught a forty pounder just last week. Bottom fishing is always good. The reefs are only 5 minute boat ride away. It's not too late to sign up. If you are concerned about bringing your boat over, it looks like there were be 2 different times folks are planning to run over so you will have a "buddy" to run with.

Better yet. Rent a boat here. There are good size boats in mid 20 ft size. While you may not have a sounder with some rentals, all you need is a handheld GPS. We can supply the waypoints. You can use boats offshore. I did for years. The rental boat companies don't want to come get you out there, but if there is a problem, we will have lots of boats out there. Plus Bahamians help each other on the water. I have been the rescuer and the rescuee over the years. In addition to fishing, we have great list of things to do. Lots of places to visit, some fun restaurants, great snorkeling and diving. Fun vacation for the kids. This is a vacation they will remember for years. Our kids started with vacations in the Exumas and next thing I knew my son was a mate on a 70 ft sportfish in the Bahamas! So come on down. It's Better in the Bahamas. Summer Updates

• Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper is closed in Federal waters after June 28, 2013. Red Snapper continues to be open in Florida state waters until July 15, 2013.

• Gulf of Mexico gag grouper season will open in Federal waters on July 1, 2013. The closure date will no longer be automatically October 31 but rather a date when the annual catch target is projected to be caught. Gag grouper will also open on July 1 for most of Florida state waters in the Gulf, but will close on July 1 for the four Eastern panhandle counties: Franklin, Wakulla, Taylor, and Jefferson (roughly from Indian Pass to the Steinhatchee River).
