67th Independence Day of India celebrated The 67th Independence Day of India was celebrated on the morning of 15 August with a flag hoisting ceremony at the Embassy premises. Ambassador Sujan R. Chinoy hoisted the Tricolour, which was followed by the singing of the National Anthem, led by the Embassy ladies and children. Ambassador read out excerpts from the President of India’s address to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day, both in Hindi and in English. Besides the Embassy personnel and their families, the 150-strong gathering included prominent members of the local Indian community from different walks of life, including academia, business, etc., Mexican friends of India and others. The function concluded with a cultural programme consisting of patriotic songs and dance by the Embassy children and local Indians, organized by the Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre, followed by refreshments. Ambassador Chinoy also gave an interview to TV Azteca, a leading TV channel in Mexico. The interpretation into Spanish was done by Mrs. Vidya Chinoy. Earlier, on 12 August, the Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre (GTICC) of the Embassy of India in Mexico had organised a concert featuring scintillating Indian dance and music performances to celebrate the 67th Independence Day of India. Ambassador Chinoy attended as Chief Guest and Mrs. Vidya Chinoy presented bouquets to the artistes at the end of the function. The concert featured Mariana Flores (Mohiniattam), Sak-nicte Romero (Odissi), Patricia Torres (Bharatanatyam), Hollving Argaez (Sitar) & Illyas Khan (Tabla), all teachers at the GTICC. Manuel Sauceverde played the Tanpura and the Dilruba. Ambassador addresses Business Coordinating Council of Puebla Ambassador Sujan R. Chinoy visited Puebla on the 20 August to address a luncheon meeting at the Hotel Presidente at the invitation of Mr. Fernando Treviño Núñez, President of Business Coordinating Council of Puebla. The business event was preceded by a city tour organized by the state authorities. A total of about 40 participants including heads of major business chambers and firms in Puebla attended the event. Mr. Roberto Marquez Alonso, President of India-Mexico Business Chamber, was also present. In his interaction with the business heads, Ambassador mentioned the linkages between India and Mexico with special reference to the state of Puebla. Earlier, last April, India’s Samvardhana Motherson Group had inaugurated its plant in Puebla to make automotive parts for companies like Audi and Volkswagen. He emphasized on the strong economic fundamentals of the Indian economy, and the role played by the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sectors in Mexican imports from India. He particularly pointed out that India is among the top five emerging pharmaceutical markets in the world and also referred to the growing penetration by Indian companies in the Mexican market and similar presence of the Mexican firms in India.The lively discussion following Ambassador’s address covered issues like prospects for investment, potential for export of consumer goods to India, patent policies of India, logistics of import and export, social development and the security situation in India. Ambassador clarified all the concerns while emphasizing that India is one of the safest countries in the world with rule of law and protection through modern patent laws. He highlighted that there is high potential for trade and investment between the two countries in sectors like energy, automobile and food processing. In infrastructure alone, India would make an investment of $1 trillion investment in the next five years, which provides opportunity of Mexican firms and entrepreneurs. The meeting was followed by a separate press conference with participation from major electronic and print media in Puebla. Ambassador provided an overview of India’s economic reforms and trade and economic engagement with Mexico. He added that the bilateral trade and investments has witnessed a high rate of growth in recent years. Several hundred of millions of dollars worth of investments have been made by some 35 Indian companies in Mexico. As of now, almost all major Indian IT companies (TCS, Infosys, NIIT, Aptech, Hexaware, Wipro, Patni Computer Systems, Birlasoft etc.) have operations in Mexico, as well as several Indian pharmaceuticals firms (Zydus Pharmaceuticals, Strides Labs, Claris Life Sciences, Hetero Drugs, Axis, Wockhardt, Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s Lab, and Solara, etc.), and in engineering, auto parts, tyres, packaging, and electrical items. Tornel, which makes tyres for cars and trucks in Mexico, is owned by JK Tyre, an Indian company. Bajaj Auto has a tie-up in Mexico with Autofin for assembling and marketing its motorcycles. Similarly leading Mexican companies like Homex, Prolec-GE, NEMAK of Alfa Group, TREMAC, Metalsa, Ruhrpumpen and Cinepolis have invested in India in recent times.

India News, August, 2013|3APEDA mounts India Pavilion at ABASTUR 2013 Mexico APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) led India’s participation in ABASTUR 2013 – Latin America’s biggest Hospitality and Gastronomy Fair targeting mainly the supply chain of major hotels and restaurants, taking place at “Centro Banamex” Exhibition Centre in Mexico City. The India Pavilion consisted of approximately ten Indian firms, such as Haldiram Snacks Pvt. Ltd., Shree Mahalaxmi Agro Farms Pvt. Ltd., Kusha Foods and Rajmaya-Pragya and others, offering products like basmati rice, mango syrup, spices, biscuits and cashew nuts. Ambassador Sujan R. Chinoy inaugurated APEDA’s India Pavilion on 26 August, the first day of the 4-day exhibition. This is the first time that Indian companies participated in ABASTUR. The Fair has 800 participating companies in an exhibition area measuring 34,000 sq. m. About 25,000 local and international visitors are expected to have attended. ABASTUR’s main partner in the organization of the show is AMAIT – Mexican Association of Tourism Industry Suppliers – and participating businesses include those dealing in with furniture, equipment, and machinery related to the hospitality and gastronomy industry. Two years ago, APEDA had also participated in the Latin American Food Show in Cancun. This is in keeping with the surge in bilateral trade between India and Mexico over the last few years, with the trade volume touching US$6.3 billion in 2012.

President, PM greet nation on Independence Day Greeting the nation on August 14 on the eve of India’s 67th Independence Day, the President of India, H.E. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and all others who had fought for India‘s freedom. Noting that the Constitution provides a delicate balance of power between various institutions of the state, he advised that this balance should be maintained. "We need a Parliament that debates, discusses and decides. We need a judiciary that gives justice without delays. We need leadership that is committed to the nation and those values that made us a great civilization. We need a state that inspires confidence among people in its ability to surmount challenges before us. We need a media and citizens who, even as they claim their rights, are equally committed to their responsibilities," he said. He also mentioned the role of democracy in realizing India’s dream. He stated that there is a direct relationship between a successful democracy and a successful economy and it serves their interests best when they participate in decision-making at the level of panchayat (village council) and other forms of local government. He called for rapid empowerment of the local bodies with functions, functionaries and finances to improve their performance. On economic growth he cautioned that faster growth does not guarantee better outcomes. He said that to achieve inclusive growth we must create inclusive governance. "We have to pay heed to his advice as we work towards building a modern democracy. The ideals of patriotism, compassion, tolerance, self-restraint, honesty, discipline and respect for women have to be converted into a living force," he mentioned. Concluding his speech with a reference to Bhagvad Gita where the teacher propounds his views, he quoted a verse, "even as you choose, so you do. I do not wish to impose my views on the people. I have presented to you what I think is right. Now it is for your conscience, for your judgment, for your mind to decide what is right."Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in his address spoke on the inclusive and inspiring growth in the country and mentioned the efforts taken by the government to shape up a new India. "[My] government since its formation in 2004 has worked hard to help India progress in an inclusive manner," he stated. He stressed the role of various schemes including Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and Right To Information Act that have been adopted by the government during its tenure in taking India forward. He also mentioned recently issued ordinance aimed at making a Food Security law. “This law will benefit 75 percent of our rural population and half of our urban population. Under the law, about 810 million Indians would be entitled to receive rice at 3 Rupees per kg, wheat at 2 Rupees per kg and coarse grains at 1 Rupee per kg. This is the largest effort of its kind in the whole world”, he said. He concluded his

Defence Minister Mr. A.K. Antony said this was an "important" first step towards a long journey in the area of warship building for the country. Only a few advanced countries have capability to design and build such aircraft carriers," he said in his speech on the occasion. The ship, which will have a length of 260m and a breadth of 60m, has been designed and manufactured locally, using high grade steel made by a state-owned steel company. Vice-Admiral RK Dhowan of India's navy has described the launch as the "crowning glory" of the navy's programme to produce vessels on home soil. Fighter aircraft - Mig-29K, Light Combat Aircraft and Kamov-31 helicopters - will deployed on board the carrier which will also carry an array of other weapons systems.

India launches world’s largest programme to provide subsidized food The government launched the USD 20,000 million welfare scheme to give cheap food to nearly 70 per cent of the population. Under the scheme, a beneficiary will be entitled to 5 kg of rice, wheat or coarse cereals at nominal price. Also, the monthly supply ranges from three to seven kilograms per person, depending on their level of income. Earlier, Parliament had passed the ambitious National Food Security Bill, 2013 that seeks to provide highly subsidised food grains under the Targeted Public Distribution System. The beneficiaries will be identified by the States based on parameters prescribed by the Union government. In a speech in Parliament, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of Ruling Coalition Alliance described the measure as a “big message” about India’s capability to take responsibility for the food security of all its citizens. She said the Bill was a fulfilment of her party’s promise to “wipe out hunger and malnutrition.”Raghuram G. Rajan appointed Governor of Reserve Bank of India Raghuram Govind Rajan, hitherto Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India, was appointed as 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s central bank, for next three years, taking took over from Mr. D. Subbarao. Rajan, who is credited to have correctly predicted the 2008 financial crisis, took over the mantle of the central bank chief executive at a time when the economy is witnessing major external and internal challenges. “These are challenging times for the Indian economy, and the RBI and the government will work together…We don’t have a magic wand to make the problems disappear. But absolutely we will deal with them”, he said in a statement after his appointment. Dr. Rajan was the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund between 2003 and 2006. He is the author of Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy, which was awarded the Financial Times-Goldman Sachs prize for best business book of 2010. He also chaired a government of India committee on financial sector reforms in 2008, recommending several monetary policy reforms including inflation targeting and hiving off the RBI's government debt management function.India announces USD 27.46 billion Infrastructure Projects Finance Minister Mr. P Chidambaram has announced that the Cabinet Committee on Investments (CCI) had given its approval for speedy execution of 36 infrastructure projects entailing investments of USD 27.46 billion. The approval, aimed at lifting investor confidence, covers 18 projects in power sector alone. Apart from power projects, the CCI has also cleared 18 projects with an outlay of almost USD 15.2 billion. These include Reliance Power’s 4,000 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power project (UMPP) and Essar Power’s 1,800 Mw Jharkhand power project. Apart from power projects, the CCI also cleared nine projects with an outlay of USD 135 million. Mr. Chidambaram noted that these measures would help boosting investment scenario in India. “The message we are sending through the approval is that we are keen to get the investment cycle restarted. The cycle has started and we are pushing it further,” he said.

India News, August, 2013|5Indian Companies invested USD 57.37 billion across Europe A recently released report titled ‘Indian Companies in the European Union: Reigniting Economic Growth’ by the Europe India Chamber of Commerce (EICC), a body that promotes bilateral trade between the European Union and India, has noted that Indian companies had invested US$56 billion across Europe between 2003-2012. “Despite the challenging global economic scenario, the companies have managed a gradual turnaround in their European operations by successfully repositioning and realigning their operational capabilities in a demanding and organized market”, the report stated. Reportedly, India exported goods worth USD 25.83 billion in July 2013, registering a growth of 11.64 per cent. “The primary driver behind this investment is the rapid growth of Indian Multinational Corporations (MNC) which are seeking new markets for growth and diversifying risks, access to new technologies, R&D capabilities and leveraging their cash rich positions against low valuations in today’s financial market”, noted the report. It also mentioned that Indian companies employ 134,000 professionals in Europe and the biggest pan-European employer is the Tata group, with about 80,000 employees across its 19 companies in Europe. A dominant 47 per cent of the Indian greenfield investment and 63 per cent of the employment creation was accrued to the United Kingdom followed by Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Italy.

The air transport (including air freight) in India has attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) worth USD 449.26 million from April 2000 to march 2013, as per the data released by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

Key Developments and Investments Jet Airways, India's second largest airline by market share, is in talks with Abu Dhabi-based

Etihad Airways for a strategic alliance. In the light of the discussions, the two have been involved in various collaborative agreements. Jet has recently leased a wide body aircraft along with 60 of its cabin crew to Etihad. According to the ‘aviation’ jargon, a wet lease of an aircraft is an arrangement whereby the lessor (Jet in this case), provides crew, maintenance and aircraft for a consideration. In turn the lessor takes on the responsibility for supplying and operating the aircraft.

Jet Airways, that carried the largest number of international passengers from India in 2012, would also be offering visa procurement services to its passengers who have travel plans for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and are flying the carrier. It has partnered with Dubai-based travel service firm Dnata wherein the travellers from India to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah would have the option to individually secure their visa prior to departure. Passengers would be guided through the visa process by Dnata's travel specialists, who will collect all the necessary documents and submit the visa application to the UAE Government on the passengers’ behalf.

In a bid to offer a more convenient transit to international passengers, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is set to commence ‘visa on arrival’ facility, after it gets a nod from the Centre.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), managed by Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd. (MIAL) has been honoured with ISO 14064-1:2006 certification for its Carbon Emissions Accounting by Bureau Veritas, a global leader in carbon certification worldwide, for the second year in a row.

In 2012, CSIA had become the first ever airport in India and the second in Asia, to be acknowledged for its consistent efforts in reducing its carbon footprint. With the certification in 2013, CSIA is now in the process of upgrading its ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation Rating from Mapping (Level 1) to Reduction (Level 2). CSIA has introduced a variety of measures to reduce carbon emissions from its operations. CSIA was the first airport in India, to initiate the mapping process voluntarily and submit emission levels to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in 2012.

Government InitiativesThe Indian Government is dedicated to the development of the Indian aviation industry and has introduced several policies and regulatory reforms to boost private participation and investments in the same. Recently, the Government allowed 49 per cent FDI by foreign airlines in the sector. Some of the deals like Tata-Air Asia and Jet Airways – Etihad have already been announced and are likely to boost civil aviation in a big way. Moreover, in order to fuel growth in maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) business and to make it competitive, the Government has made several concessions in the Union Budget for 2013-14 including extension of time period allowed for utilisation of aircraft parts and equipments from three months to one year, exemption of custom duty on parts, equipment, accessories, spares required for MRO purposes to private category aircrafts also and inclusion of foreign airlines for the purpose of duty-free imports of parts, etc as applicable for scheduled air transport services. The industry has widely welcomed these concessions.The Indian government has also proposed investment of USD12.1 billion in the airport infrastructure during the 12th (Five Year) Plan period, of which US$D.3 billion is anticipated to come from the private sector. The scope of development would include construction of new airports, expansion, modernisation of existing airports and development of low cost airports to keep the tariff at its minimal at smaller airports, improvement in connecting infrastructure, and development of world class Air Navigation Services infrastructure. The Government has also made significant initiative to spur development of the aviation industry by privatising five major airports under public-private partnership (PPP) model and endorsing emergence of Greenfield airports which envisages synergy between the public and private sector.Road AheadPrivate participation in expanding air transport network and related infrastructure has propelled growth of air traffic in a big way in India. Industry analysts estimate that India would be the third largest aviation market by 2020, whereby it would be well-equipped to handle 336 million domestic and 85 million international passengers. Mr. Ajit Singh, the Minister for Civil Aviation, has further revealed that in order to enhance air connectivity, airlines are expected to add around 370 aircrafts, worth USD 27.5 billion, to their fleet by the year 2017. Moreover, it is estimated that commercial fleet size would reach 1,000 by 2020 from 400 today, and 1,000 General aviation aircraft by 2020 including fleet renewal. Villagers use smart card to get free mineral water Womenfolk in Gujarat’s drought-prone Palodia village, 20 km from Ahmadabad, no more have to foot it to the far-away well in this hamlet to fetch drinking water. Thanks to a charitable trust, the villagers have an easy access to the most precious gift of nature. All they have to do is to reach the reverse osmosis (RO) water dispenser installed by the trust in the heart of Palodia and swipe the electronic card given to all homes. The 20-litre bottle brought by them is filled in a jiffy and the service is free of cost. The facility makes use of an electronic swapping system which reads the unique identification card given to each family. The Electronic ID and RO system combine to provide each family 20 litres of water every day. The Haridwar Mitra Mandal Charitable Trust, which has entered into a joint venture with the Palodia village council for introducing the wonder dispenser, has donated two RO plants which can purify 12,000 litres of water a day. Social worker Chandrika Bhavsar told Khaleej Times that the project would be helpful in maintaining hygienic environment and better health of all the 300-odd families in the village.
