    1.0 INSTALLATION

    1.1 Mounting

CAUTION: Do not attempt to precharge any I-Pdampener prior to mounting the unit into the pipingsystem.

All I-P pulsation dampeners mount on standard ANSIand API flanges and can be supplied to mate with ringjoint or raised-face connections. NPT connections arealso available. Refer to Figure 1-2 for recommendedinstallation piping for discharge dampeners and Figure1-3 for installing a dampener used as a suction stabi-lizer. Refer to Section 3 for applicable flange size andpressure class.

    1.2 Precharging Instructions

The correct precharge is vital for maximizing efficiencyof the pulsation dampener. Generally, precharge pres-sure is based on the average operating pressure of thesystem (see General Precharging Instructions below),but precharge can be affected by other system param-eters. For these applications, consult qualified Hydrilpersonnel for correct precharging instructions.

    1.2.1 Discharge DampenersFor normal operating conditions, set the prechargepressure at 50 to 60 percent of the average operatingsystem pressure or 3000 PSIG, which ever is lower.The precharge pressure can be as low as 30 percent oras high as 75 percent of system operating pressure;

Figure 1-1. Precharging IP Series Dampener

    NitrogenDampener

however, these precharge settings may shorten dia-phragm life.

1.2.2 Suction DampenersGenerally, unless the suction system is being pressur-ized by a booster pump, no additional precharging of asuction dampener is required. When using a boosterpump, set the precharge to approximately, but no morethan, 40-50 percent of the available suction pressure.

1.2.3 Precharge ProcedurePrecharging a Hydril I-P pulsation dampener requiresstandard hand tools, regulator, a charging hose as-sembly (available from Hydril - see Figure 1-1), and atorque tool capable of applying 120-150 lb-in torque.1. Unscrew the lifting eye counterclockwise to ex-

pose the charging valve.2. Connect the nitrogen source to the charging valve.3. Open the charging valve by turning the top hex nut

3 to 4 full turns counterclockwise (see Figure 1-4on page 5).

    4. Install nitrogen precharge.5. After precharge is installed, close the charging

valve and tighten it using 120-150 lb-in torque.6. Remove nitrogen source and install lift eye.

NOTE: (1) All I-P units are shipped with no precharge.(2) The precharge is based on absolute pressurevalues. (3) Always use a regulator when precharging.

2.1 PrechargeThe I-P series pulsation dampener is virtually mainte-nance free when it has been installed properly andprecharged. However, the vessel should be checkedperiodically for proper precharge and leaks. Unlessconditions indicate otherwise, checking the unit everysix months should be sufficient.

Remember: The precharge is based on the averagepressure in the system. If this pressure changes, adjust the precharge.

2.2 TroubleshootingRefer to Figure 2-1 for I-P series fault analysis tree.

2.3 Diaphragm Removal1. Remove all pressure from the pulsation damp-

ener. System pressure and precharge pressuremust be zero PSIG before removing the pulsationdampener from the line. To remove prechargepressure, open the charging valve and bleed it off.

WARNING: STAND CLEAR OF ESCAPINGPRESSURE TO AVOID INJURY.

    2. Remove the pulsation dampener from the line.3. Remove the jam nuts from the studs or the cap

screws if applicable.4. Remove the bottom plate by prying it loose with a

medium-size screw driver or pry bar.5. Take care not to damage the sealing surfaces in

the throat of the dampener body.6. Remove the diaphragm in one of the following two

ways:a. Cut around the metal insert and remove the

top portion of the diaphragm. Remove theremaining portion by folding it and pulling it out.

    b. Screw an eyebolt (refer to Table 2-1 for eyeboltsize) into the diaphragm insert. Invert thediaphragm with a crowbar or similar tool.

2.4 Diaphragm Installation1. Clean all interior surfaces of the vessel paying

particular attention to all sealing surfaces. Re-move all scale and/or rust around the mouth withfine sandpaper if necessary.

    2. Clean and inspect the bottom plate for damageand corrosion. Replace or repair if the sealingcapability of the bottom plate is in doubt. Removeall scale and/or rust with fine sandpaper if neces-sary.

    3. Lubricate the bottom plate and all interior surfacesof the vessel with a castor oil or equivalent.

    4. Take the new diaphragm in the at rest position androll one side toward the other forming a crudefootball shape. A thin belt or strap may be helpfulin holding this shape.

    5. Apply lubricant (castor oil or equivalent) to thediaphragm and insert it longways into the body ofthe vessel as far as possible (the diaphragmshould go over half way into the body). Fold theremainder of the diaphragm into the vessel andallow it to open inside the body. Position thediaphragm within the neck of the vessel.

    6. If the vessel is equipped with a teflon back-up ring,

    Top Hex Nut

    Stem

    Figure 2-2. Pulsation Dampener Assembly

install it over the bottom plate. Insert the bottomplate into the diaphragm neck taking particularprecaution not to push the diaphragm back into thebody.

    7. Thread the jam nuts over each stud and tighten thenuts until bottom plate is snug against the body.

    8. Clean and inspect the mounting flange. Repair ifnecessary.

    9. Install a new gasket and mount the dampener.Secure flange studs and nuts.

    10. Remove, clean, and inspect the charging valveand the O-ring seal. Replace valve if damaged orworn sufficiently to cause doubt in its ability to sealeither at the O-ring or stem.

    11. Clean and inspect the charging valve adapter onthe body. Remove all scale or rust with finesandpaper if necessary. Install the charging valveusing commercially available thread lubricant.CAUTION: DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE!

    12. Tighten the lower hex nut on the charging valveusing 50 to 60 lb-ft torque.

    13. Precharge the dampener with nitrogen only. Properprecharging is vital for maximizing the efficiencyand life of the diaphragm. Refer to Section 1 forprecharging instructions.
