695.Gaston Chaissac (French, 1910-1964)

Provenance: Private Southwestern collection, acquired circa1960 at the Galerie Iris Clert, Paris.
N.B. Chaissac’s brightly-colored primitive compositions runthe line between the French academic painting tradition andwhat is termed “Outsider” art. His paintings are closelyrelated to the work Jean Dubuffet and are often categorizedas part of Dubuffet’s “Art Brut.” Chaissac, however, came toreject this categorization and the theoretical implications ofthe Art Brut movement; while Dubuffet strove to create“raw” art, Chaissac’s eloquent figural images conveyed a widearray of pure human emotion.
Born in Burgundy in 1910, Chaissac retained a peasantidentity throughout his life. His first mentor was Germanpainter Otto Freundlich, whose primitive style and explorationof spatial sequences can be seen in Chaissac’s work. After hisfirst show at the Galerie Gerbo in 1938, he began to workwith Robert Delaunay and Albert Gleizes.
Both amusing and elegiac, Chaissac’s figural compositions areironic and uniquely provocative. His tight compositions arefilled with puzzle-like spaces, freeform shapes, bold outlines, and bright colors. Known for his collages, Chaissac used avariety of media and techniques including metallic andwooden debris and wallpaper scraps.

698.Salvador Dalí (Spanish, 1904-1989)
SignatureSigned “DALI 1963.”Oil on canvas, 30 x 74 3/4 in. (76.2 x 189.9 cm), framed.Condition: Light abrasions, craquelure, soiling/surfacegrime.
Provenance: Private collection; painted and gifted to BenSomoroff, New York, during a photo shoot for Lookmagazine, then through his family to the current owner.
N.B. Considered one of the most important artists of theSurrealist movement, Dalí is best known for his dream-likepaintings with a method termed “critical paranoia.” Thiswork however, reflects more of the Dadaist aesthetic.Dadaism, occurring predominately in Europe from 1916 to1923, is based on the principles of nihilism, anarchy, and
deliberate irrationality. As the movement faded, many Dadaartists turned to Surrealism, embracing the opportunity tocontinually challenge notions of rationality. Dadaismexperienced a revival, predominately in New York, in the1950s. By filling the canvas entirely with only a signature anddate, Dalí is challenging the notions of the established painteras well as acceptable subject matter.
A photograph of the artist next to this painting accompaniesthe lot.
