FROM THE PASTOR

“Likes” & “Love” The Media. Our President recently termed the media as the “enemy of the people”. Some have sworn off watching a morning or evening telecast. Some have cancelled newspaper subscriptions. The word “media” is treated as a curse word in some circles. The reputation of the media is taking a whole lot of bumps and bruises. I’m afraid that I am going to make it WORSE---oh no!!! Permit me to add one single word…I know…bear with me…SOCIAL media. Now, those are really fightin’ words! SOCIAL media---Instagram, Twitter, Google, Facebook—and a whole lot of other “types” are being torn apart during our lunch hour conversations! Most would like it all to just STOP! Well, MOST------except for one, yep, ME. I would like to rescue SOCIAL media---at least the SOCIAL media I use and understand. I like FACEBOOK. I said it. You can quote me. I just like FACEBOOK. Recently, I posted pictures of my 90 year old father who is coping with Alzheimer’s. He can no longer walk and is totally dependent on kind nurses for his morning, afternoon, and evening care. Dad is wheelchair bound and waiting to die. On Tuesday, February 21st I posted on FACEBOOK pictures of my Dad with my Mom---balloons, greeting cards, photos of his great grand-children and the one and only gift he wanted for his 90th----a small piece of apple pie. Just a few bites. My FB post received more than 175 friends and family across the nation extending love, prayers, words of encouragement---and plenty of ‘Happy Birthdays’ to my Dad. Those greetings changed a moment. He smiled. He cried. We all cried. He won’t remember tomorrow. My friends, sometimes all we have…is a “moment”. We change ONE MOMENT in one life. A hug. A smile. A word of encouragement. A word of scripture. A prayer. A text. And YES, A POST ON FACEBOOK. Miracles happen in a moment. So, before you aim a dart at the media---or smirk at the thought of SOCIAL media…..will you remember my Dad? A 90 year old man who had a moment…yep, a miracle on his birthday because of the media…yep, the media. We are grateful for your love and prayers. Pastor Matt

The month of March begins our walk to the Cross. This is not a new walk for us. We have seen the cross before. The cross hangs prominently in our churches. The cross hangs gently around our neck. The cross has a place in our homes. This Lenten season---the cross speaks to our hearts. Join us each Wednesday evening beginning March 8 for a series of evening devotions on the “The Cross He Carried”. Pastor Matt will share messages that will encourage us to carry the cross on our heart! Our children will distribute a unique pin each Wednesday that will remind you of the Cross He carried. Return to worship this Lenten season and pray that the Lord speaks from His cross to each and every one of us! Invite a friend to worship with you.

Looking Ahead to Holy Week 2017 Community of Christ is offering a series of events for all ages; children, teens, adults, seniors. We invite you to remember the upcoming Holy Week as a family dedicated to our Savior. Monday, April 10th - BIBLE, BREAD & BREAKFAST Early morning Bible study with Pastor Matt (studying the lessons Jesus taught in Holy Week). We will conclude with Holy communion and enjoy breakfast at Cracker Barrel; 8:00-9:30 a.m. Monday, April 10th - CHRISTIAN FILM & FELLOWSHIP Come and enjoy movie snacks and a fine Christian film during Holy Week! Tuesday, April 11th - HOLY WEEK IN A CHILD’S EYES Enjoy pizza with Pastor Matt! Pastor will lead an interactive experience for children (pre-school & elementary ages) to understand the teachings of Jesus, the Last Supper, and the Cross. Each child will complete a craft. We begin at 6:00 and will finish about 7:30 p.m. Parents are welcome. J Wednesday, April 12th - Community of Christ will host a Concert on Wednesday, April 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary incorporating musicians and singers from Community of Christ and Swanton High School. The concert will also include “The Jazz Passion” arranged and written by our very own Director of Music, Eric Dickey. This jazz interpretation of the Passion of Jesus Christ is based on the Gospel of Matthew. It tells the story on a literal level, as well as portraying the events in an emotional and symbolic manner through music. It is divided into four movements, The Garden, The Betrayal and Denial, The Trial, and The Crucifixion. Each movement begins with a reading from Matthew followed by a reactive jazz interpretation of the reading. At the conclusion of this original jazz work, “Via Dolorosa” (Way of Sadness) popularized by Sandi Patti, is presented as a final reflection upon this powerful Gospel story. Maundy Thursday, April 13th - Worship, the Lord’s Supper, and Stripping of the Altar at 7:00 p.m. Come and reflect on this last evening of our Lord’s earthly life. Good Friday, April 14th Two worship services to remember the death of Jesus. Traditional Seven Last Words Remembrance at 12:00 noon and Service of Darkness at 7:00 p.m.

Other changes: Because of increased demand for Edge of the Orchard after Tracy Chevalier’s visit, there will not be enough copies for our group, so Adrienne suggested we switch April’s selection to Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper and May’s selection to Husband’s Secret. She is hoping that

she may be able to gather enough of Edge of the Orchard for June. We will meet in the church library/lounge on Tuesday, March 21st at 1:00 p.m. to discuss our March selection. See you then!

Church Council Church Council Appoints Two Task Forces Our church council will review the two task forces of members who will examine the responses from our fall Stewardship Sunday retreat and a vision for adding an assistant pastor to the staff in 2017. These task forces will meet short term (3-4 meetings) and return a response to our council leadership. The church council will present ideas and staff recommendations to the congregation in early spring. Please pray for these gatherings and ask God to direct our mission and ministries. Thank you! On March 16 & 17, 1974 we had a festive, organizational weekend. It started on Saturday night with a potluck supper at Hope Methodist Church. The President of the Michigan District, Bob Wietelmann and Mission Director, J. Phil Wahl were present. The business included adopting a number of resolutions necessary for organization, ratifying our constitution, calling the Pastor and electing a Council. On Sunday Bishop Wietelmann preached the sermon, and the Reverent Wahl installed Pastor Gottschling. During the service, members signed the charter covenant. In remembrance of our 43rd anniversary, founding member Kathy Chamberlain has very enthusiastically offered to provide a cake at our Lenten Soup Supper on Wednesday, March 15th. Please join us as we celebrate our rich heritage as Community of Christ! Copies of the C of C Constitution As a supportive partner and congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, we are guided by a constitution with specific congregational bylaws. Thanks and Appreciation to Linda Wittenmeyer Linda served as our accompanist for a variety of choirs and as the pianist for the Saturday afternoon worship service.
