The University understands that sometimes

students experience personal circumstances

which may affect their performance. If

unforeseeable circumstances such as a

medical issue or a family death is affecting

you, it is important that you alert your School

before any course work deadlines or exams. If

you are unsure if your issue counts as a

mitigating circumstance please contact

[email protected].

You can do this by filling in a mitigating

circumstances form. The University has

created one single form which is now used by

all Schools. There is also a useful guidance

note which explains how the form should be

completed and instructions for where to send

it. If you need help filling it out please email

[email protected]. We would also suggest

you speak to your advisor of studies to make

them aware of the difficulties you are facing.

By filling out a form before an assessment

you can greatly increase your chances of a

more positive outcome. If you would like

further advice about mitigating

circumstances including assistance with

completing the form, you can contact DUSA.

If you did not submit a mitigating

circumstances form and still think that

something affected your performance you

can write a letter of appeal. If you wish to

appeal your course work or exam grade, you

can also contact DUSA for further advice.

You must clearly state how the mitigating

circumstances affected your performance

and all applications must be submitted with

supporting evidence. The mitigating

circumstances form and supporting

evidence provides the University with the

relevant information which they will consider

when marking your course work/exams.
