Before that, they lived in Cresco, working at the mission. While in Osage, they found a group of like-minded people among the congregation. The group looked for its own place to worship and found a home in the former Free Methodist Church building at 511 Woodland Av- enue in Riceville, which had most recently been a Mennonite Church. The church held its first serv- ices at the beginning of January, with members from Elma, Charles City, Riceville, Osage and LeRoy. “It was originally 12 people praying, and their prayers were answered,” Todd said. “It’s been a blessing,” Shan- non added. “We don’t want a spectator church,” he added. “We want people involved, to be part of the family. We enjoy worshiping and getting to know the people out here.” They have been working on remodeling the basement, so there is an area for children, and Schaeffers are putting their money where their mouths are, as their son, John Luke, attends the church’s children’s program. “We’ve met wonderful people in northeast Iowa,” he said. “We have friends from Waukon, Dec- orah, Cresco, Floyd, St. Ansgar . . . all the towns.” The name of the new church came from Shannon. “It’s for people who are struggling,” she explained. “Living Truth de- scribes who we follow and how we try to follow. The Bible says Jesus is the Truth, and we are try- ing to live our lives in truth. We’re living in the truth of God’s word – it’s something we have to continue.” “One lady came who grew up in the church to see what we are doing,” Todd said. “We hope the word gets out that something is going on, and people will come see us. “And I promise not to speak longer than three hours!” he joked. In the coming weeks and months, Schaeffers hope to reach out to the community, meet the people who live and work in Riceville and get to know resi- dents. “We’re used to very inti- mate contact,” Shannon said. “We’re not afraid to talk about the times we’re living in and help people sort out what is happen- ing. We want to offer help through prayer in uncertain times.” “I think we’re at a very unique time in history,” Todd added. “We’re welcoming anyone who’s curious and encourage people who are in search and want to get involved, hear testimonies from people who were delivered from drugs and alcohol. Whether it’s in person or over the phone, we’re willing to help in whatever way we can. “We want to experience and meet the needs of our commu- nity,” he added. “Deliverance, freedom and discipleship – I think those things are what years of ministry have taught me.” Living Truth Ministries meets for Sunday school and church services at 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Anyone wishing to learn more about the church can contact Todd at 870-219-4461 or can talk to Dianna Nicolai. Living Truth Ministries serving Riceville area – Continued from Page 1
