MONARCH Z CLIPSOverview

For a typical 8’ high x 4’ wide panel, customers mount the continuous lengths along the wall at 3 different heights paral-lel with the floor. These are secured to studs at 16” on center or to blocking at 8” on center. The shorter panel clips are secured to the back of the panel every 12-15” horizontally.

To match fastener locations on the panel with those on the wall a single template can be used or one can use a story pole.

Installation of the panel is accomplished by simply dropping the panel onto the continuous lengths mounted along the wall.

Monarch recommends a #8 Pan Head thread screw for attaching the shorter panel clips to the back side of MDF or particle board panels, and stocks these in 1/2”, 5/8” and 3/4” lengths.

The important constraint to remember for using the Monarch Z Clip system is that the height of the head of the screw must be less than .125” for our standard Monarch Z Clips.

System Requirements

• Continuous vertical support structure behind cladding

• Minimum general cavity depth (dimension from the sheathing or the face of exterior insulation torear of cladding) – 1” (26mm)

• Minimum localized cavity depth (dimension from the sheathing or the face of exterior insulationto rear of cladding) – 1/2” (13mm)

• Minimum ventilation at top and bottom of rainscreen cladding system (2.4in2/lft minimum)

• Appropriate weather resistive barrier*

• Emphasis on flashing and redirection of water

• Appropriate dead and live load structural design

Continuous Weather Resistive Barriers

Drained & back ventilated systems (D&BV) typically require a continuous weather resistive barrier at

the rear of the cavity, usually located on the outer face of the inner leaf. Typical characteristics are:

• UV stable

• Self-sealing or self-cinching

• Black in color

The UV stability requirement is due to the open joint design of the D&BV system and the potential

long-term exposure of the weather barrier to ultraviolet rays from the sun. The black in color

requirement is to minimize the visual impact of the weather barrier and increase the aesthetic

sensibility. If necessary, both of these requirements can be achieved through the installation of

a black flashing membrane over the existing weather barrier. The weather barrier should be

installed and all penetrations and seams should be sealed per the manufacturer’s written instruction.

CLADDINGKey Considerations

Thermal Expansion & Contraction

• The design must allow for continuous vertical

airflow behind the panels

• One anchor on each extrusion should be

installed in the top of the upper most slotted

hole to create a single fixed attachment point

• Remaining substructure anchors should be

centered vertically in the slotted, pre-drilled

substructure attachment points

• An approximate gap of 1/4 inch (6mm) should

exist between the ends of each substructure

component

• Individual panels should not span the ¼” (6mm)

gap above

• Substructure anchor must thoroughly engage in

the underlying support system (steel stud,

backing plate, etc.)

Concealed vs Exposed Anchors

• In Exposed Systems, the screws

securing the panel to the substructure

are visible in the face of the panel

and in Concealed Systems they are

not visible

• In Exposed Systems, the screws in

the face of the panel are often painted

to blend with the underlying panel

• Exposed Systems, like the TS-110, are

less expensive and easier to install

than concealed systems
