Welcome Golfer! We at Metro Pittsburgh Youth for Christ are very excited and grateful that you have chosen to take time out of your busy schedule to partner with us in our 2019 Golf Marathon (or are seriously considering doing so). We would like to thank you in advance and assure you that you are in for a great experience! The information in this packet is set up to help you successfully complete the Marathon and compete in the fundraising contests. If you read through this guide and follow the suggestions in it, you will certainly reach fundraising levels to secure a nice prize and quite possibly contend for the grand prize. HOW DOES THE MARATHON WORK? Marathon Focus The Golf Marathon event on Monday, June 10, 2019 has the potential to raise a significant amount of money to help sustain and expand Youth for Christ’s ministry efforts to middle and high school students throughout the Pittsburgh area. Marathon Format Two trips through the golf course, playing three balls, results in 108 holes played. Golfers play a personal scramble with 3 balls on every hole. All three balls are hit and the 2 worst shots are picked up and dropped at the spot of the best drive. This continues with every shot until putting out with all three balls. In golf swings you play the equivalent of 108 holes but go through the course twice instead of six times. Each golfer has their own cart and a caddy to assist in this effort. Marathon Food You will enjoy a continental breakfast, lunch from the Clubhouse Grille, and a sit-down dinner. These are provided for the golfers and caddies. Drinks are also provided all day long to keep you refreshed. Marathon Sponsors : ONLINE PLEDGES! You secure pledge commitments from sponsors. You will receive your own personal fundraising page. You can customize it, add photos, and send emails to friends, family, co-workers, and other potential supporters with a link for them to donate to sponsor you. See page 6 for instructions.

Marathon Guidelines Each golfer must raise a minimum of $500.

To be eligible for a fundraising prize, (one per golfer) a golfer must reach one of the fundraising prize thresholds of: $1000, $1500, or $2000. The grand prize goes to the highest overall fundraiser above $2000.

Each golfer must be able to participate for the entire marathon – Monday, June 10, 2019, from 6:00 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening.

If you get pledge commitments offline, you must bring your pledge forms on the day of the Marathon, complete with all the appropriate information for each sponsor.

Youth for Christ will take on the responsibility of collecting the pledges – but golfers must complete the appropriate information on the offline pledge form for each sponsor so that we can do that.

Fundraising Prizes Prizes will be awarded in the following categories and contests: Fundraising prize thresholds are $1000, $1500, $2000, and highest overall above $2000.

Mystic Rock Golf Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa. This grand prize promises golfers a challenge like no other!

Skill Competition Prizes Closest to the pin on every par 3 with every shot. That’s 24 tries to win! Lowest gross score through first 18 holes of personal 3-ball scramble. Prizes awarded to 1st &

2nd place. Lowest gross score through second 18 holes of personal scramble; finished by 4:15 to qualify.

Prizes awarded to 1st & 2nd place. Golfers and Caddies A YFC student volunteer caddy & cart are provided for each golfer Caddies drive carts, spot balls, fore caddy & tend to the needs of their golfer all day Each golfer will play the day with one other golfer. Answers to some questions you or others might have.

1) Where does the money go? To support the work w ith kids done by the staff of Metro Pittsburgh Youth for Christ (Campus Life); to help fund trips and events that occur throughout the year; to support the possible start of a new ministry in other school districts in the Pittsburgh area. All the funds raised are 100% tax deductible and stay with Youth for Christ in Pittsburgh!

Classic 100 Rules

Quick, efficient, but safe play is the general rule. No honors, hit when ready. Pick up your 2 worst shots and drop at your best shot. Ball can be moved one club length (except on traps and greens)!

Pick up after triple bogey. Spend 30 seconds looking for lost balls. Drop a new ball at the spot of your best

shot.

Play around slower groups, not through. Jump to the next open hole.

Teams should stay together until at least 80 holes.

Take care of the course: replace divots, repair ball marks. Temper the adjectives issued at your golf balls.

Hydrate or die.

7:00 a.m. ........................ Shotgun start (pending greenskeeper’s clearance)

9:00 a.m. ............................ Break stations open at far ends of the course.

11:00 a.m. .......................... Lunch available at the clubhouse snack bar. Pick it

up as you pass by or send for it.

4:00 p.m. ............................ Warnings for exit from Gold Course will begin. Start in for dinner.

4:30 p.m. ............................ Dinner served in the Clubhouse.

5:30 p.m. ............................ Back 9 of Gold Course is available to complete your holes.

Please note: Pledge forms are essential if you have offline pledges that you have received. We

cannot tally the results of our marathon without them. Please have them with you and ready when you arrive.

* All the water, sports drinks, and soda you can drink is complimentary! Cedarbrook Course does not permit coolers to be brought in from outside.

ONLINE REGISTRATION AND FUNDRAISING!

Youth for Christ 2019 Golf Marathon Registration Instructions Golfer Registration Thank you for your support of Metro Pittsburgh Youth for Christ’s Golf Marathon! To register for the Golf Marathon, go to yfcmp.golfreg.com. Once you register, you will receive the information you need to easily customize your own personal fundraising page, email friends and family, monitor and enter donations and pledges, and view pledge reports. Your page will have a fundraising thermometer that will track your goals and progress so that your supporters can see what you need to reach your goal! If you prefer to call people instead of doing this online, you can use the sponsor forms in the back of this handbook to record your pledges. Collecting the money is not necessary, but it is helpful! You can have your sponsors send their pledges directly to our office, as long as they are clearly marked that they are supporting you for the Golf Marathon. Checks are to be made payable to “YFC” with your name in the memo and mailed to YFC Golf Marathon, 6314 Library Road, South Park, PA 15129 Information about the Golf Marathon will be sent periodically via the “Tee Times” email newsletters. Steps to reaching your goal or more . . .

1. Start by registering online and customizing your fundraising page with pictures, videos, and your own message to potential supporters. Be sure to sponsor yourself!

2. Make a list (use the forms that we can provide) or go to your e-mail contact list of relatives, neighbors, friends, church members, doctors, dentists, co-workers, employers, etc. Try to come up with at least 50 names and their e-mail addresses for online pledges or phone numbers to contact them offline.

3. Set aside an hour one morning, another hour one afternoon, and another hour one weekend. Call or e-mail as many of your people as you can. Those who you did not reach the first time, try them during your next session.

4. E-mail the sponsorship link directly from your website to your potential sponsors. Ask them to sponsor you with a lump sum donation of whatever they think that they could afford to contribute. (It would not hurt to mention that you could be eligible for a prize if you raise the most amount of money!) Donations to Youth for Christ® are 100% tax deductible – just in case they ask – and they will receive a receipt from us when they donate.

5. IF you prefer to do all of this offline, the sample letter on the next page is available for you to use with your own personal note. Email pamhart@yfcmp.org to receive an electronic, editable copy of this letter. Remember though to follow up with a phone call or email if you do send a letter!

It is that easy! Don’t forget that you can ask face-to-face as well if you find that is easier. Go for it!

On Monday, June 10, 2019, I am teeing off at sunrise and playing 100 holes of golf. Now I love golf, but this is early for golf and it is a lot of golf. So you might be asking why. The undertaking of this challenge is not meant to prove to myself (or to you) how tough I am or how devoted I am to the sport. It’s actually about how tough it is to be a teenager today and the devotion of Youth for Christ to help teenagers navigate today’s challenges.

I want to help these teenagers, too, and I want to do that by helping Youth for Christ here in the Pittsburgh region continue to minister to today’s youth. The intent of this letter is to ask you to join me, effectively multiplying this Golf Marathon fundraising effort which in turn will multiply the number of kids reached.

My normal golfing efforts may be in vain (no comment please), but by sponsoring me in the Golf Marathon to chase, hack, chip, putt, and whack hundreds of little white balls for hours on end, my efforts on June 8 will definitely result in accomplishment. Forget golf for a second. Do you wonder how YFC staff members can accomplish anything considering how challenging it is to reach today’s teenagers? YFC staff members intentionally build relationships with middle school and high school students through weekly Campus Life meetings, student leadership training, and extended weekend and week-long trips throughout the year. Staff members also spend time with students outside of school whenever they can, in fun, casual, and serious settings, earning the right to be heard. This allows the students to trust the staff of YFC which leads them to accomplish their mission, “To provide every young person with the opportunity to make an informed decision to be a follower of Jesus Christ and participate in a local church.” This in turn provides these teens with the spiritual, emotional, and mental toughness and devotion necessary to combat and navigate life’s challenges. Would you join me in a terrific cause by sponsoring me? A $100 donation (or $1 per hole) would provide funding for over 50 students for one day!
