Octopus Card is in fact
• Subset of Smartcard: integrated circuit embedded in plastic card
• ETC card, HKID card, Mondex• Multiple purposes beyond e-payment
Smartcard’s involvement in Education
• Student ID card (photographic ID)• Attendance system• Library card• Charge card for purchase in school (bookstore,
canteen, school fee)• Door access system• Intra-school GPS system• Reward point system for behavior management
Benefits of using smartcard in school
• Single system for varying purposes• Centralized record system, all types of
activities available for review• Real-time update of transaction/records• Less paper used – environmentally friendly
Disadvantages of using Smartcard in Education (school)
• Affordability - high investment and maintenance cost
• Required trained expertise to operate and maintenance
• Security bleach on integrated system -> total access
• Lost card = Cease of all related services• High cost in replacement or expansion
Future use of smartcard in Education
