1 of 2 »MUSIC IN SIGHT« FACT SHEET FOR THE OPENING OF THE ELBPHILHARMONIE HAMBURG During the opening concerts in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, a one-of-a- kind display on the building’s facade will visualise the music in real time for a period of approximately two hours. This display will translate the music coming from the depths of the Elbphilharmonie into colours and shapes. Twenty-eight powerful projectors putting out a total of 800,000 ANSI lumen will put on a display on the Elbphilharmonie’s Kaispeicher with an overall resolution of 17,400 × 2,160 pixels. More than 800 spotlights draw the visuals out into the third dimension. For each of the 11 concert pieces, VVVV, an algorithm developed specially for use in the digital display in the software program, will be fed with up to 64 live audio tracks of the concert, thus enabling it to generate corresponding worlds of light and images in real time – with the help of 12 synchronised high-performance PCs – on the facade of the Elbphilharmonie. Interplay of light and shadows, net structures, particle and liquid simulations, 3D mapping effects and the materials of the building and the hall emblazon the facade, combining architecture and music in a style never seen before. The scope, length and complexity make this display a unique project in the field of generative music visualisation. The »Musik in Sicht« (music in sight) concept, which will bring colourful joy and anticipation to the whole of Hamburg, was developed by the global lead agency Jung von Matt as part of the comprehensive Elbphilharmonie campaign together with the Cologne-based subsidiary of the Jung von Matt Group gestalt communications GmbH, the specialist for communication within space, events and PR.
