Message from the President As I close out my third year and end of my term as board president, I am happy to reflect on Daemion’s progress and look forward to an exciting year ahead.

With our focus on mental wellbeing and reducing the stigma around mental health, Daemion expanded its services into the broader Chester County community. We partnered with Minding Your Mind to address the very serious topic of suicide prevention in a public education session at the Malvern Public Library. We also provided support groups for parents dealing with the addiction of adult children at Trinity Presbyterian Church and on Aging Well and Life Transitions at Surrey Services.

Focusing on overall mental wellbeing, we began working with the Maternal and Child Health Consortium of Chester County to support their staff in managing the daily pressures of serving underserved women, infants, young children, and their families.

Continuing to spread awareness of Daemion’s mission and engage the broader community, we hosted our sixth annual Taste of Berwyn family festival, our signature fundraiser held at Hilltop House in Easttown Township. It was a beautiful day with hundreds of folks enjoying lots of delicious food from great restaurants in our area, wonderful musicians, singers, and performers, shopping from a variety of vendors, and games for all ages, including Bingo for seniors from Genesis in Paoli and Dunwoody Senior Living in Newtown Square. Eagles enthusiasts experi-enced the game on two Best Buy jumbo flat screen TVs, thanks to Best Buy of Downingtown.

In keeping with mindfulness and mental wellbeing, we also sponsored a “Yoga on Tap” event at La Cabra Brewing in Berwyn, offering a relaxing activity for the spirit, followed by an outstanding La Cabra lunch to feed the body, with food sale proceeds donated to Daemion. There is so much more to tell about the year, so please read about all of our accomplishments in this Annual Report.

Looking to 2020, Daemion Counseling Center will celebrate its 50th Anniversary, a milestone for our small but mighty nonprofit. We hope that you will join us in honoring Daemion’s legacy of service and continuing to make a positive difference for the total health of our local community.

Sincerely,

Melissa E. Hawes Board President

What is Stigma? Stigma is when

someone, or even you yourself, views

a person in a negative way just

because they have a mental health condition. Some people describe

stigma as a feeling of shame or

judgment from someone else.

Stigma can even come from an internal place,

confusing feeling bad with being bad. National Association

Mission Daemion Counseling Center offers professional mental health counseling focused on helping community residents navigate life's many transitions, by providing expert yet affordable care.

HistoryDaemion Counseling Center is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit community-based counseling agency that opened its doors in 1970 when a group of concerned community members met informally in their residences and crafted the concept of Daemion House as a way of helping and

supporting run-away teens and their families, working ultimately toward reconciliation while trying to ensure the safety of the teenagers involved in the interim. The office and volunteer staff members were initially housed in the basement of the home on the property of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Devon, Pennsylvania.

Over the years, Daemion has adjusted and updated its

mission to reflect evolving community needs. It has transitioned from an agency that met critical needs in times of crisis to Daemion Counseling Center that works with individuals who struggle with a variety of issues and who are committed to devoting the necessary time with a professional therapist, one hour at a time, to heal and move forward with their lives.

In 2020, Daemion will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with special events that strengthen our roots, engage our local community, and build support for a future of serving their needs.

Our Programs Individual, Family, and Couples Counseling

Clients at Daemion Counseling Center have the opportunity to talk confidentially with one of our highly-trained, licensed therapists about challenges they are experiencing. Daemion’s therapists provide a welcoming, compassionate and nonjudgmental environment that creates a positive counseling experience from which a strong therapeutic alliance can form.

We see clients struggling with managing symptoms associated with mood disorders, such as unipolar and bipolar depression, a variety of anxiety and personality disorders, and adjustment disorders arising from transitions that occur across the lifespan, as well as those who are experiencing grief and bereavement that accompany many types of loss. We also see individuals who desire to improve their quality of life and personal wellbeing through exploring relationships, self-esteem, communication skills, health, and spirituality, and the many other dimensions that create a value-driven, meaningful life. Our therapists use a variety of counseling theories and techniques to explore new and healthier ways of thinking, behaving, and relating to and with others that help individuals meet their unique goals of therapy.

Anger Management Program Daemion offers a specialized, one-on-one, 11-session psycho-educational program thatprovides a structured format in which the clientand therapist-educator explore together his/herpersonal experience with anger and how itmanifests emotionally, cognitively andbehaviorally. Clients are evaluated at the first andlast session using a validated, evidence-basedanger management instrument that measures theexperience, expression, and control of anger.

Throughout the program, the therapist works with the client both in-session and through between-session assignments, to better identify triggers, to recognize and replace distorted thinking patterns that contribute to anger and related emotions, and to explore and practice positive and productive alternative behaviors to replace current reactive behaviors.

A two-session evaluation program is also available. Clients first meet with the therapist-educator for an intake and evaluation session. At the second session, clients receive feedback on the results of the evaluation and, based on the recommendation of the therapist-educator, determine best next steps that meet the individual’s goals.

Drug and Alcohol Evaluation Daemion offers a two-session Drug and Alcohol Evaluation service to clients using validated instruments designed to measure substance and/or alcohol use and the risk of abuse.

Clients first meet with the therapist for an intake and evaluation session. At the second session, clients receive feedback on their evaluation, are given appropriate educational information, and, based on the recommendation of the therapist, determine

best next steps that meet the individual’s goals.

***

Both the Anger Management and Drug and Alcohol Evaluation programs meet the requirements of many court-, school-, law enforcement-, and employer-initiated requests for professional, independent evaluations.

Program Impact Daemion Counseling Center is a cornerstone of support providing hope, one hour at a time for our friends, neighbors and family members who are in need. We offer professional mental health counseling to clients seeking help as they navigate life’s many transitions.

The majority of clients seen in 2018 came to Daemion Counseling Center due to Trauma- and Stress-Related Disorders; the most common among our clients was Adjustment Disorder.

The essential feature of Adjustment Disorder is the presence of emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor(s). Stressors may surround life transitions such as getting married, getting a divorce, failing to achieve work-related goals, or other difficult life changes.*

Adjustment Disorder often occurs with anxiety and/or depressed mood, as well as disturbance of conduct (behavioral problems). The distress or impairment associated with Adjustment Disorder is often made evident by a decreased performance at work or school and temporary changes in social relationships.*

myself and has given me tools to

This disorder may also complicate the course of illness in individuals who have a general medical condition. Additionally, Adjustment Disorders are associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts and completed suicides.*

In addition to Adjustment Disorder, individuals and couples come to Daemion to address concerns related to dysfunctional family matters, divorce and single parenting issues, trauma, job loss, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and an inability to manage their anger.

Client Stories All names and personal details have been changed to protect clients' privacy.

Olivia was married for six years before accepting that herhusband regularly used drugs, and a heroin overdose in front of her is what it took for her to enter counseling. Olivia was referred to Daemion Counseling Center from Women’s Resource Center. While she started counseling in order to help her cope with the stress and uncertainty that accompanied her husband’s chronic drug use, Olivia also worked on recognizing

her co-dependency in her marriage as well as in other relationships, and began to identify strategies for cultivating her own independence and self-advocacy. Olivia also appreciated having a place to share her feelings about the shame that surrounded her husband’s drug addiction, her feelings of inadequacy for not being able to control his drug use, and her own inner shame that began in adolescence. After two years, Olivia still comes to counseling regularly and has made significant changes in her life.

Karl is a 17-year old high school student referred to DaemionCounseling Center after an incident involving under-age drinking and the local police department. Karl was reluctant to come for his first appointment, but encouraged by his parents, he not only attended the two-session Drug and Alcohol Evaluation, but also came for additional sessions. Karl appreciated being able to talk openly about his struggles fitting in with his peers, the chronic

anxiety that contributed to his starting to drink alcohol, and about his fear of growing up, going to college, and being away from his family and friends. Karl came away with practical strategies to reduce his anxiety, remain mindful in the present, and cultivate relationships both with friends and family members.

Natalie is a 26-year old woman who experiences anxietythat is common with normal life transitions such as graduating college, moving away from home, a first job, living with a partner, and the natural waning of long-term friendships. Three years ago, Natalie came to Daemion Counseling Center on a regular basis, working to identify negative thinking, to acknowledge and articulate a fuller range of emotions, to

Page 13: (610) 647-1431 - Daemion Counseling › wp-content › uploads › 2019 › 04 › ... · 2019-04-26 · (610) 647-1431 Staff@DaemionCounseling.org 2 Message from the President As

accept what was in her control and under her influence and what was not, and to initiate change that was aligned with her values, strengths and goals. Though her goals and life events have changed over this time, Natalie continues with therapy, checking in with her therapist every few months and scheduling an appointment to help maintain the positive wellbeing that is important to her no matter her life circumstances.

Parent Support Group Twice a month, Daemion Counseling Center facilitates a support group of parents of teen and adult children with mental health and substance abuse challenges. The space created within this group is one of compassion, support and acceptance for those who find themselves navigating the often painful, shameful and conflicting

emotions that are common on what can be a long journey. While the sharing of strategies and solutions is one goal, another is cultivating an awareness that suffering is not unique, and that one can find comfort and unity in the shared experience of another. Perhapsmost importantly, in listening to each other, we can find hope and encouragement in the stories and life experiences of others who have traveled a similar road and who have found their own way.

Taste of Berwyn™ is our signature fundraiser and annual food, music, and arts festival with a taste of something for everyone.

This year we hosted our sixth annual Taste of Berwyn! We thank the local restaurants, vendors, and performers that came together for a day of fabulous food, fun, entertainment, music, and arts – and especially appreciate the hundreds of attendees who supported us from throughout the community. Folks strolled through the tables of vendors showcasing their wares while enjoying the tunes of the talented entertainers Cassidy Lynn, Madeline Knight, Brooke Falls, John McKee, and Jack Stanton and the Band. The Betsy Daily School of Performing Arts also commanded attention as they gracefully performed for the crowd.

There was much to do and eat – with delicious food from Margaret Kuo’s Chinese cuisine, TiraMisu, Texas Road House, Chinnar Indian cuisine to Little Miss Moffitt treats and irresistible Handel’s ice cream, and more. Besides musical entertainment, children were able to get their face painted, pop balloons for prizes, decorate a T-shirt, play lawn games, and enjoy the twisted balloon art of Marc Maraldo. Adults who weren’t waiting for the raffle of a 50” LED SMART HD TV could watch the Eagles game on one of two 75” HD TVs (raffle prize and large screens provided by BEST BUY!) -- or could get competitive with

Bingo, giant Jenga or lawn games.

It was a fun and festive day for everyone! The proceeds from Taste of Berwyn™ help us fulfill our mission of assisting those who are struggling with mental health issues and who cannot afford traditional therapy fees.

We are tremendously grateful for our 2018 Taste of Berwyn™ sponsors and volunteers. It is because of your generosity and support that it was a success!

The Betsy Daily School of Performing Arts energized the audience at Taste of Berwyn.
