TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city’s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was be-gun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city’s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick’s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year pro-ject. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as “an exceptional work of human creative genius.” This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

YEAR END GIVING

At this is the time of year, we take a look back upon our stewardship for the year. Some find it opportune to give End of Year Gifts to the parish. Because Christmas and New Year’s Eve are falling on weekends this year, our parish will not see the normal number of collections. St. Philip Neri Parish relies on these end of year gifts to help fund our much needed maintenance renovations and our many parish ministries. All financial gifts (cash, stock, real estate, life insurance with church as beneficiary, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, and IRA/retirement accounts willed to the church) can be considered. REMEMBER: All financial contributions are tax deductible. Have you remembered our parish in your will and your financial planning? This is a beautiful way to help our parish continue the work of ministry and service for years to come with future generations of your families who will continue to celebrate sacraments and our Catholic faith here.

As always, thank you for your faithful and generous support of our Church parish and the stewardship work of ministry.

Mr. Gatti’s Pizza Truck - Market Basket Parking lot every Wednesday from 5 til 8PM. A percentage of proceeds go to

“Let there be no one without a gift to offer, no one without gratitude as we celebrate the salvation of the world, the birthday of the human race.” - St. Basil the Great

PASTOR’S CORNER: Bethlehem Star The wise men went in search of the light of the world, realizing as they travelled that it was God, the maker of the stars, who was actually leading them by the light of the star. Although tradition tells us that there were three of them, the Gospel never states there were three, but likely comes from the three gifts that Matthew tells us were given to the child Jesus: “gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Sometimes they were called “magi”, a Greek word with the origin word “magic” for their unconventional way of life like astrologers, readers of the stars, rather than crowned monarchs Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium, speaks of how members of other faiths are part of God’s plan of salvation; “Nor is God remote from those who in shadows and images seek the un-known God, since he gives to everyone life and breath” (LG16). The magi went off in search of a greater light, the uncreated source of all light; all the while being guided by God the Father. The magi represent the pagan, Gentile nations, who will be evangelized by the Church. At least once, Matthew tells us the magi were lost on their journey, first arriving in Jerusa-lem rather than Bethlehem; but they were wise enough to ask for directions—even though they were men! May our church parish always be ready to welcome, encourage, provide opportunity and show the way, the truth and the life to those who are seeking. And like the magi, may they find Christ in us, the light of the world.

Did You Know? Why Magi Gifts? The Western Church has recognized the Magi as Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar since the seventh century. St. Bede most likely wrote this description of them: The Magi were the ones who gave gifts to the Lord. The first is said to have been Melchior, an old man with white hair and a long beard who offered gold to the Lord as to a king. The second, Caspar by name, young and beardless and ruddy complexioned honored Him as God by his gift of incense, an oblation worthy of divinity. The third, black-skinned and heavily bearded, named Balthasar by his gift of myrrh testified to the Son of Man who was to die. St Irenaeus wrote that the gifts of the

Magi were given to Christ for his offices associated with redemption. The gold was for Christ as King, the

frankincense as a symbol of His Deity and the myrrh burial ointment as a symbol of death for the Suffering Redeemer. On another level, St. Irenaeus said the gold signifies virtue; the frankincense, prayer; and the myrrh, suffering. Church Father Origen wrote of the gifts: “gold, as to a king; myrrh, as to one who was mortal; and incense, as to a God.” Dr. Peter Kreeft writes: Three wise men, three gifts, three offices (prophet, priest and king), three parts of the human soul (intellect, heart and will) because the Inventor and Designer of man is three. The medieval mind saw Trinitarian echoes everywhere, for a very good reason: Everything is made by the Trinity, and what is made must reflect its Maker.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

Over the next few weeks from the Feast of the Epiphany, (Jan 7) you might see curious grafitti scratched in chalk over some doorways: 20 + C + M + B + 18 The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for “May Christ bless this house.” The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the magi’s. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In the years of struggle, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi’s quest for meaning and peace. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. You will need a piece of chalk and a small container of holy water, sign of our baptism and consecration to the Lord. Gather with family members, friends, and perhaps some neighbors at the front door.

Epiphany Household Blessing January 7, 2018

Leader: In the (+) name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let the glory of Emmanuel be upon this household! Legend gives these names to the Lord’s visitors: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. With chalk, their initials sign this doorway, along with four crosses, and the numerals of the new year. [20 + C + M + B + 18] Let us pray: Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless this house!” May Christ bless us all, now and forever.
