Anhand empirisch erhobener Daten konnte Twar-dawa aufzeigen, dass die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung mehr als positiv ist. Alle wichtigen Indikatoren belegen: Die wirt-schaftliche Erwartungshaltung der Bevöl-kerung ist rundum positiv und sorgt damit für intensives Kosumverhalten.Insgesamt, so Twardawa, sei die wirt-schaftliche Erholung in Deutschland und deren Auswirkungen auf den Einzelhan-del, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Musikbranche, so gut wie seit 10 Jahren nicht mehr.

Für Taylor Guitars ist es die erste Musik-messe in neuer Konstellation: Der kalifor-nische Hersteller stellte im letzten Jahr die Vertriebsstruktur auf eigene Beine. Dafür wurde ein neues Logistikzentrum gebaut. Es steht in Amsterdam und fasst alles unter einem Dach zusammen: Büros, Service-Center, Reparaturwerkstatt und Verkaufsflächen. Das soll, so Taylor, die Versorgung des europäischen Marktes voranbringen, denn so könnten die Stütz-punkthändler nach optimaler Qualifikati-on sorgfältig ausgewählt und mit ausrei-chend Instrumenten versorgt werden. Diese Händler werden intensiv geschult, so dass sie mit den speziellen Eigenheiten der Taylor-Gitarren vertraut sind. The basses are made with a newly developed copper magnesium alloy which is free of cadmium, nickel and other harmful substances. What is slightly different is that a committed acoustic specialist such as FishMan should produce an effects pedal for bass players. Back to the future■ fishMan is harking back to the good old days with its Blackstack pickup, days when acoustic guitar pickups were not as pristine as they are now. The sound hole pickups used back then did have the ad-vantage however that they produced elec-

tric sounding mids that could cut through even in a loud rock band. The Blackstack

gives some of these sounds back to the acoustic guitar. As a

stacked humbucker this passive pickup produces a brilliant open tone that is free of sidetones. It can be installed with an end pin

jack or with a cable.

The Beast■ laBoGa has unchained the Beast, a two channel all-tube amp. The output can be switched between 15 W and 8 W. The character control lets you dial up all man-ner of clean sounds from 1 to 10, from jazzy soft to tight & bright. The overdrive channel provides sounds from blues to heavy metal, with high gain reserves. Another interest-ing feature of the new amp is the separate tone control for the overdrive section. The loudspeaker can be muted by means of the Dummy Load function.

Good news for performers■ Last year Martin Guitars presented its new Performing artist series. These instruments have become immensely popular in only a short time so it made perfect sense for the company to add three more models to the range: the DCPA4, OMCPA4 and GPCPA4. They are similar to the existing guitars but have sapele back and sides and a sitka spruce top. The instruments feature Martin’s High Performance Neck with its slim pro-file for ease of playing. The Fishman pick-up system makes the guitars ideal for live stage performances.

The next step■ Sonic systems from Shadow are firmly established on the market thanks to the excellent design of these acoustic guitar pickups. The Erlangen based manufac-turer now presents its new “MicroSonic” end pin preamps with sound hold con-trols. Very little work on the actual instru-ment is needed. Only the end pin jack and the pickup itself need drill holes. The

controls are accessible through the sound hole, and all the electronics are housed in the end pin jack. The systems are available with either the “Nanoflex” pickup or the magnetic “Nanomag” system.

NXT series electric cello■ Two new instruments have been added to the NXT series from NS DeSiGN. Essential Roots series■ For many years Hohner music instruments have en-joyed an excellent reputa-tion in the “American Roots” scene (Blues, Folk, Country). HoHner therefore decided

to team up with famous guitarists who endorse its harmonicas to create a new vintage-inspired series of guitars. The new models in the es-sential roots series

are Hohner’s interpretations of legendary Western guitars. S0 (M0) and S00 are in-spired by guitars from the 1920s and 1930s, with their small bodies and extremely powerful authentic sound. The focus is on tone, playability and “no variation into-nation”. To achieve this, techniques have been borrowed from established Hohner Essential guitars.

A logical addition■ Good sound from an acoustic instrument depends not only on the pickup but also on the amplifier. The Finnish pickup manu-facturer B-Band therefore took the logi-cal step of producing their own acoustic amplifier. The Uros 100 W amp was devel-oped in cooperation with the loudspeaker specialist Sami Penttila. It has two chan-nels for instruments and microphones and three-band EQ with semi-parametric mids. The amp also features feedback suppres-sion, a 10" speaker and a 2,5" tweeter.

Neuer Hals in alter Tradition■ Neu bei Martin Guitars sind die beiden Modelle D-18P und D-28P High Performance. Sie entsprechen den bekannten und lange eingeführten Modellen D-18 und D-28 der Standard-Serie, sind aber mit den modern zuge-schnittenen Hälsen der Performing Artist-Serie ausgestattet. Diese sind schlanker geformt und mit einem

etwas weiteren Saitenabstand versehen, was der linken Hand die Arbeit erleichtert. Die D-18P kommt dabei mit einem Korpus aus Mahago-

ni, kombiniert mit einer Fichtendecke, die D-28P ist mit einem Palisan-derkorpus und einer Fichtendecke ausge-stattet.

A new neck with an old tradition

■ Martin Guitars is launching the D-18P and D-28P High Performance mod-els. They correspond to the familiar tradi-tional D-18 and D-28 from the Standard Series but are equipped with the modern tapered necks from the Performing Artist Series. The necks offer the player a slim-mer feel. The first couple of frets are also designed for a more comfortable feel due to a special spacing. The D-18P has a ma-hogany body and a spruce top, while the D-28P has a rosewood body and spruce top.


Stimmungsretter■ Ein zu Hause vergessenes Stimmgerät kann den ganzen Tag vermiesen. sha-Dow hat daher ein Stimmgerät für E-Gitar-re entwickelt, das fest ins Instrument einge-baut wird, ein Feature, das bei Akustikgitar-ren schon lange selbstverständlich ist. Das Stimmgerät sh E-tuner steckt diskret im Rahmen eines Standard-Humbuckers und wird auf Knopfdruck aktiviert. Es sind keine Holzarbeiten notwendig; es wird einfach nur der Rahmen ausgetauscht. Beschränkt ist dieser Komfort bisher auf entsprechen-de Gitarren mit Humbuckern, aber an wei-teren Versionen wird schon gearbeitet.

A happy tune■ Leaving your tuner at home can spoil your whole day. Shadow has now devel-oped a tuner for electric guitars that is in-stalled permanently in the instrument, something that acoustic guitar players have enjoyed for some time. The sH E-tuner is housed discreetly in the frame of a standard humbucker and is activated at the touch of a button. There is no need for any woodworking skills; you just need to replace the frame. At the moment only guitars with humbuckers can benefit, but the company is working on other versions.

The tun-a comes in a standard case, whereas the tun-C clamps onto the headstock or some other appropriate part of the instrument. The other features are very similar. The units operate with the aid of contact sensors for setting the various parameters such as the mode or the cali-bration.

Completely revamped■ iBanEz has revamped its entire Artwood series and now presents the aW3000CE-nt and the aW3050CE-LG, two solid to acoustic guitars with high-quality pickups. The two instruments fea-ture mahogany backs and sides, high-qual-ity Grover machine heads and a rose-wood fretboard. The bridge and saddle are made of bone, and the preamps and pickups come from LR Baggs. The guitars differ in the material used for the top. The AW3000CE-LG has an Engelmann spruce top and high-gloss finish and the AW3050CE-LG has a cedar top and matt finish.

HC series extended■ The HC series from HoHnEr has be-come a popular beginner’s guitar in many countries. This highly successful series has now been upgraded with five new solid top models – two full scale models, one 3/4 size and two half size models. The HC26 and HC22 are the new top-of-the-range models. The HC22 has a 547mm scale and was designed with a slightly wider and thinner neck according to the specifications of the European Guitar Teachers Association for improved ergo-nomics. KF-Serie erweitert■ Die KF-serie des Herstellers eaw wurde um mehrere Modelle erweitert. Es handelt sich um sehr kompakte 3-Wege-Systeme für professionelle und in Simulationsprogrammen planbare Beschallungseinsätze. These are extremely compact 3-way systems for professional sound reinforcement applications that can be planned in simulation programs. The mid and treble drivers are arranged coaxially so they can be localised as a

A tiny PA and mixer■ The EON-210P from JBL is a subcompact PA comprising two 10" plastic speakers with detachable transport covers that really pack a punch. One cover is a small power mixer with built-in effects, the other is a cable store. This full-range system weighs a total of less than 17 kg. The rated output of the Crown Class D power amp is 2 x 150 W. With 30 V phantom power, loudspeaker jack outputs and bass and treble controls with ±6 dB cut and boost the system is de-signed not so much for professional musi-cians but as an extremely portable PA sys-tem for small venues.

With other brands the electret condenser microphone is the top-of-the-range model, but Mipro’s flagship model is not based on this permanent charging design. The MM-89 has a con-stant cardioid polar pattern across the en-tire frequency range. The grill contains a

multi-layer replaceable pop shield. Maxi-mum SPL is 147 dB, so the microphone can handle both heavy metal and brass. The microphone has excellent suppres-sion of touch and vibration noises. It is available in silver, black and nickel, remi-niscent of famous-name high-end live vocal mics.

The intercom matrix ■ The Bosch subsidiary Telex RTS pres-ents the intercom matrix ADAM-M. The communication system has 8 slots and supports all known ADAM cards including the new MADI-16+. This means that up to 256 ports can be interlinked. The 19" 3U unit allows redundant integration of AES, RVON and Analog despite its compact size. Connection is particular simple as there is no need for external panels. RTS ADAM-M represents the first successful at-tempt to introduce industrial design into the otherwise colourless world of inter-communication systems. tem in REAC format with digital stage boxes and monitor mixing stations. The M-480 has an impressive array of 48 input channels and 6 stereo returns. There are 27 buses distributed across 16 Aux paths, 8 matrix paths and the LCR main bus. Depending on the configura-tion, the console can handle 90 inputs and 90 outputs. 1800 MHz wireless systems■ In response to the forthcoming loss of UHF frequencies from 790 to 862 MHz for wireless mics, sennheiser is now launching radio mic systems that transmit at 1800 MHz. The systems in the evolution wireless ew 100 G31G8 series will there-fore be operating in a higher frequency range, one that has been released in many countries throughout Europe exclusively for wireless audio transmission. In some countries, including Germany, Austria and

Switzerland, there is no need for an oper-ating licence. Hotels, conference centres, churches, schools and universities in par-ticular will benefit from the new systems; and in the music industry bands and solo performers will appreciate the freedom these systems can bring. Up to twelve channels can be operated in parallel with the ew 100 G3 1G8. The new systems have a transmission power of 10 mW and a range comparable with that of UHF systems with the same transmission power. The user-friendliness of the evolution wireless UHF series has of course been replicated in the 1800 MHz version. The transmitters can be easily synchronised with the receivers via an infra-red interface; the systems have an integrated equalizer and a sound check mode that constantly monitors the HF and audio levels.

Coated snare drumheads■ The Controlled Sound X snare drumhead from Remo is based on the “Coated Con-trolled Sound” series. This “CSX” is made from a 12 mil coated foil and 5 mil black dot on the reverse side, giving the drumhead 20% greater durability and sound control. The “mil” is used in the USA to indicate one thousandth of an inch (0.0254 mm). “12 mil” is therefore roughly equivalent to 0.3 mm. These drumheads are already being played by Virgil Donati, Joey Jordison, Jason Bon-ham and Alex Gonzalez. The Remo drum-heads available from Gewa comprise the 10", 12", 13" and 14" versions.

Analog mixing consoles from Dynacord■ The mixing consoles in the new CmS series from dyNaCoRd look a bit like the little sisters of the Midas Venice. Each of the analog mixing consoles features two effects processors each with 100 presets and 20 user locations, an OLED display, tap delay, configuration via USB and re-

mote control via MIDI. The USB port on the analog mixing console is also used as an audio interface with four input channels and four output channels. The 11-band graphic equalizer is ideal for live perfor-mances. The mixing consoles do not have any subgroups but master faders for two integrated effect sends, two aux sends and two monitor paths. An interesting feature is the feedback filter in the monitor out-puts which only has a frequency control-ler and an on/off switch. The on/off Voice Filter under the high-pass filter is another unique feature of the Dynacord consoles. The sound can be shaped with a tunable mid-band and the usual shelving filters.

Small digital Cadac desk■ Soundking presents a compact 19" 16-channel digital desk under the brand name of CadaC, the manufacturer of high-end mixing consoles renowned for its theatre desks with fully balanced internal signal processing. In contrast to the Stu-diomaster Digilive 16 with which it shares many components, the Cadac dm1600 is equipped with four instead of two SHARC DSPs of the fourth generation, and its 24-bit converters are clocked at 96 kHz. The Cadac can be

expanded to 48 channels via an optional Firewire interface so there is nothing to stop it being used with digital multicores and stage boxes. All the param-eters of a channel can be accessed via ded-icated pots and are shown on a 7" colour display. Cadac also offers compact analog mixing consoles in a mid-price range that is unusual for this brand. LIVE1 is available in 16, 24 and 32-channel models.

Mac-compatible■ The mSC1 Control Center from JbL is a hardware monitor system controller for a desktop studio that gives a DAW the large monitor volume control and loudspeaker selector switch of a large control room mixing console. A subwoofer output can be used for two loudspeaker pairs com-bined. The unit also features Room Mode Correction Technology to tune your moni-tor system to the room and is now compat-ible with the Apple Macintosh.

Grand audition von Palmer gestattet es, 10 Stereoboxen-paare und 4 Subwoofer per Knopfdruck zu vergleichen. Die Einheiten lassen sich kaskadieren, man kann also bis zu 40 Lautsprecherpaare und 16 Subwoofer miteinander vergleichen. Die Fernbedie-nung bietet einen integrierten schaltbaren Tiefpass für die Subwoofer, sowie Dim- und Mute-Funktio-nen an. Alle Ausgänge sind symmetrisch und galvanisch getrennt. Eine Pegelanpassung von ± 12dB ist darüber hinaus individuell für jedes Stereopaar und jeden Subwoofer gewährleistet. Dazu lassen sich optionale Anzeige-LEDs an das Gerät anschließen. Diese LEDs können dann auf die Lautsprecher gestellt werden, um anzuzeigen, welcher Lautsprecher gerade aktiviert ist. Die Signal-Ein- und -Ausgänge sind alle mit XLR-Buchsen ausgestattet, die Lautspre-cheranschlüsse für die passiven Laut-sprecher sämtlich mit Speakonbuchsen.

Changeover system for speaker presentations■ A good speaker presentation with di-rect comparison between different sys-tems is technically extremely demand-ing. Grand audition from PaLmeR allows 10 stereo speaker pairs and 4 subwoofers to be compared at the push of a button. The units can be cascaded so a total of 40 speaker pairs and 16 subwoofers can

be compared. The remote control

offers an inte-grated switch-

able low-pass filter

for the subwoofers, plus dimming and mute functions. All the outputs are bal-anced and electrically isolated. The level of each stereo pair and each subwoofer can be adjusted by ±12dB. Optional LEDs can be connected to the unit and placed on the speakers to indicate which speak-ers are currently active. The signal inputs and outputs are all equipped with XLR sockets, and Speakon connections are provided for all the passive speakers.

PPVMEDIEN Readers’ Awards■ The destination of the annual PPVMEDIEN Readers' Awards is determined by the votes of readers of the maga-zines KEYS, guitar, Soundcheck, DrumHeads!! and Tasten-

welt. Every year, the international Musikmesse/Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt am Main provides the setting for the presentation of these awards, the atmosphere being up-beat but informal. The presentation of the awards was a great success.
