welcome to islamic university

It is an honour and pleasure for me to extend a warm welcome to the candidates who intend to compete for admission to various programmes and course at Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST). IUST, a university in rural setting, was established in November, 2005 by an act of the State Legislature to disseminate and advance knowledge and create a highly skilled and trained human resource. The Univeristy started offering academic programmes in the year 2006 in 6 disciplines (4 Post graduate, 1 Undergraduate, and 1 Diploma programme) by enrolling 186students. In a short span of five years, despite financial and other constraints, the Univeristy managed to build the infrastructure vital to supporting the growth in our academic programmes. We currently offer 14 programmes of study to a total of 1500 students with an annual intake capacity of 600. During the last 5 years the University also got recognized by AICTE and UGC, and also became a member of Association of Universities in India.

The University is committed to bring about a quality improvement, modernization and capacity building in technical education in the state in order to fulfil the requirements and expectations of the industry in today's

am confident that in times to come IUST will become one of the best universities in the country. Towards this we need to continue nurturing our work culture and the academic structure that is employment focused and be partnered by the Wakaf Board and State Government and, at the same time, maintain our administrative autonomy and academic independence.

I wish all the best to our students who will complete their academic programmes this year and hope that they will prove to be a valuable asset for the society. I, once again, welcome all the students who succeed in getting admission to our Univeristy. For any queries, please feel free to contact us.

globally competitive environment. We plan to institute further demand-driven courses in tandem with augmented facilities and establish further linkages with institutions and organizations of national and international repute in order to maintain an academically vibrant and competitive environment at the Univeristy. It is hoped that such programmes will cultivate a spirit that forsters looking beyond borders and cultures, exploring fresh boundaries, and making our students employable at the national and international level.

It may be in place to express that as an institution that endeavours to impart an education of global standards, we nurture a motivated and committed group of faculty and staff to train the young minds that enter our doors and equip them to better future both for themselves and the society.

The University expects its students to be highly disciplined, motivated and committed to hard work so that they contribute to the University and also enhance their own education during their stay as pupils of the Univeristy.

I have this opportunity to assure you that IUST is well equipped to train you and has earned a name as a seat of learning where academic standards are high and quality education is paramount. However, we cannot rest on our laurels and I am conscious of the fact that many more things need to be done. In order to carry forward the work, I need cooperation of our students, faculty, staff and the community at large. I

9The University › Vision & Mission

To drive these objectives, Islamic University has instituted three Centers. They include:

Rinchen Shah Centre for West Himalayan CulturesCenter for International Peace and Conflict Studies Mantaqi Center for Science and Society

These Centers are mandated to impart portions of the core curriculum to all full-time students, to offer degree programs and to promote advanced research. By integrating Humanities and Social Sciences into our core purpose, we aim to provide a well balanced academic environment for both students (who are seeking a career) and scholars (who are looking to further their understanding of people and the world). The inclusion of General Sciences in the core curriculum will help students understand and appreciate the basic sciences and their applications in the real world. Our focus on career development and overall personality enhancement is a concrete step towards providing a more complete education for leadership.

Islamic University offers opportunities for higher learning to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and other regions. We aim to:

Give our students an appreciation of the wonder and beauty that exists in the diverse and plural world we live in.Seek knowledge in the pursuit of a ‘complete education’, with a clear focus on job markets and career orientation.

In keeping with our vision of interdisciplinary learning, Islamic University’s strong Science and Technology orientation is complemented by the diverse and innovative introduction of Social Sciences and Humanities into the curriculum. Every student enrolled in a degree program is required to take up 20% of his/her credits in general education.

We firmly believe that significant awareness of the Humanities and Social Sciences will help graduates to better understand social trends and human aspirations within the work place. It will also encourage them to appreciate diversity amongst people and contribute towards positive change.

Our academic infrastructure, including our laboratories and workshops for food technology and engineering, compare favorably with the very best in the State.

We have taken the lead in offering innovative, job-oriented programs that combine education with opportunities.

Our fleet of twenty buses, carefully maintained, safely operated and well managed offer a convenient way to get to the campus comfortably and inexpensively.

We believe in an administrative system that is supportive of both faculty and students.

To facilitate education beyond the classroom, we provide our students the opportunity to engage in many activities including athletics, campus publications, community radio and membership in various social and professional organizations.

Islamic University seeks to provide this opportunity by deconstructing and defining what it takes to make a good university. Over the last few years, we have been calling ourselves a garden for dialogue. Slowly we are starting to learn what this implies:

Many who visit our campus say it has a unique “energy”. We believe this comes from maintaining the right balance between instruction and inquiry. Our learning always encourages discussion and exchange of ideas.

We provide, encourage and monitor opportunities for interaction between students and teachers. A low student/faculty ratio and faculty mentorship ensure such opportunities.

We are committed to preparing students for employment. To enhance skills and train our students, we partner with Companies that groom our students to fare better in the competitive job market.

why islamic universityin a world that is growing closer, thereby revealing the wondrous diversity of ideas and cultures, histories and futures, a sense of discovery in education is what we need today. in many ways, it is educational institutions, and particularly institutions of higher learning, that must provide the younger generations with material and mental equipment to face the exciting challenges of our times.

history and governance Islamic University of Science and Technology was established by an Act of the Jammu & Kashmir State Legislative Assembly in November 2005. The Chancellor of the University is ex-officio the Chief Minister of the State and its Board is the Board of Directors of the J&K Muslim Wakf Board.

The apex executive authority of the University is its Executive Council, chaired by the Vice Chancellor. Its flat administrative structure comprises of five key executive departments consis-ting of the Office of the Vice Chancellor, the Office of the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Office of the Finance Officer, the Office of the Registrar, and the Department of Estates.

accreditations Islamic University of Science and Technology is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and its specified courses are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). During the academic year 2011-12, the University anticipates the total enrollment to be over 2000 students.

locationThe University’s 25 acre spectacular campus has the Himalayan mountain range on one side, the Jhelum River on the other and a beautiful grove of almonds cradling the main campus.

It is located in Awantipora, a small picturesque town situated on the main national highway (NH1A) in Kashmir approximately 30 km south of the capital city of Srinagar and just adjacent to the famed saffron fields of Pampore. Awantipora town comprises about 900 households that are mostly dependent on agriculture for livelihood. However, small units such as apiculture, cricket bat manufacturing and saw mills are also finding their way into the town’s economy.

This historically significant town was capital of Kashmir during the reign of Awantivarman.

Kashmir is also a cultural crucible that has cradled three major religions – Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. Islamic University understands its responsibility to further this legacy by nurturing a spirit of dialogue and understanding, within its community of learners and in the context of the present scenario and perspectives.

islamic university of science and technology was conceived to address the growing need for an institution in jammu & kashmir offering job-oriented courses combined with high quality education. keeping pace with the demands of our times, the university provides young minds opportunities to learn from an accomplished faculty in a technologically enabling and intellectually stimulating environment.

community initiatives Social Responsibility is an important part of the culture and ethos of our University. We take every opportunity possible to reach out to the community and seek means and mechanisms to connect to it. Such efforts revolve around community needs, not as perceived by the University, but as expressed by the people themselves. Over the last year, University-Community relations have strenghened with the establishment of Mantaqi Center of Science & Society. There have been intensified efforts on part of the University to help farmers get savvy with latest techniques in 'green-house' farming/ This, as per the experts and the farmers, can ensure good yield of vegetables etc. in harsh winters too. The University is also working on a project that can reduce farmers' dependency on chemical fertilizers and decrease the capital investment in farming. Our focus is not limited to farming community only. Cognizant of the risks that confront the youth today, we organize awarness drives aimed at dispelling myths and bringing about positive behavioural changes. In the recent past, we organized Health Day wherein the Director SKIMS brought to youth the diseases, like diabetes, associated with lifestyle changes World AIDS Day was one more occasion when the community could get the questions which they feel shy about asking answered in a confidential manner by the health experts. An ambulance at the disposal of the community, a radio-studio operated by the community and students together and timely responses to need and concerns arising in the locality and even far-off are some of the other ways we are trying to bring closer 'the town and the gown' And it is just a begining.

academic visionwe live in an age of “specialization”. while specializations have enabled great strides in

research, development and wealth creation, it has also created water-tight disciplines,

fragmented communities and artificial divides. at islamic university, we strive to bridge

such divisions by consciously making the university a center for dialogue between

various academic disciplines, different social backgrounds and diverse cultures.

In order to make the education we provide relevant and current for a dynamically changing world, we constantly appraise curricula and syllabi of various disciplines, incorporate the latest advances in technology/communications/teaching skills, and plan a new program every year. Our academic programs are periodically assessed through suggestions from students, faculty and industry professionals. Although still in its infancy, the University encourages its faculty to take sabbaticals for research and special study to ensure continuous personal growth.

faculty In keeping with the above vision, during these first and formative years of our institution, the University has been careful to select senior faculty members who can create a vision for their centers or departments. We have also recruited young faculty who are passionate about teaching, committed to their discipline and keen to contribute to vision building.

The University therefore seeks out teachers with a capacity for interdisciplinary and innovative thinking. We evaluate our candidates not only on their academic qualifications, but also on the basis of their communication and leadership skills. The faculty members are computer literate and mentor students from the very start. Senior faculty is mandated to prepare the necessary infrastructure to introduce research and development in various fields leading to a PhD degree from the University.

In the coming years, we intend to pursue more talent from across the country. In the meantime, the University will rely on a deliberate visiting faculty program to expose its students to a cross-section of ideas and myriad career opportunities. To ensure the best standards of performance, members of the faculty are evaluated by their juniors, peers, senior colleagues and students.

schools of study Islamic University is mandated to open eight Schools of Study that will eventually offer a variety of degrees, diplomas and certificates of competence in several disciplines. The institution of these Schools of Study is dependent on the setting up of infrastructural facilities as envisioned in the University’s future architectural plan. Currently, four schools offer a total of 14 degree courses under separate departments.

restrict its mandate to teaching and research within the strict boundaries

of those disciplines. IUST, however, believes that all sciences render

International Peace & Conflict StudiesIn an intimately connected yet deeply divided world,

conflicts are inevitable with consequences that are far

reaching and often severely damaging. There is a need

to groom young people to understand the complexities

of our societies, sensitize them to diversity and give

them tools for resolution. The world needs harbingers

of peace.

Islamic University is aware of its role in helping

create a peaceful and just society. In 2008, we signed

a memorandum with UPEACE Costa Rica (a United

Nations mandated University) to institute the Centre for

International Peace and Conflict Studies (CIPACS) with

the aim of promoting a spirit of understanding, tolerance

and peaceful co-existence among human beings. CIPACS

is also a part of a 17-member consortium of various

universities of South Asia, South East Asia, Middle East

and the Horn of Africa – UPSAM, an initiative led by

UPEACE which aims for high quality MA programs in

fields relating to Peace and Conflict Studies.

Currently, CIPACS educates graduate students in the

theory and practice of strategic peace building through

an MA program. In the future, CIPACS intends to open

its doors to undergraduates as well as a PhD program

to produce scholars and educators trained in peace

research and practice.

Rinchen Shah Center for West Himalayan Cultures (RSCWHC) has been conceived as a research center to help the State’s citizens better understand their immediate surroundings from an ethnographic, linguistic, anthropological and cultural perspective. The Center defines “West Himalaya” as the regions known to us today as Kulu-Manali, Lahul-Spiti, Ladakh-Baltistan, Gilgit, Kashmir, Jammu and the hill tracts. RSCWHC will research, document and catalogue the human communities of this region and study how they are bound together by geography and language and have overlapping ethnic and linguistic affiliations that create a continuum of frontier cultures.

The Center appoints research associates and research fellows with a stipend to pursue studies in their fields of interests with an emphasis on topics that are relevant to the understanding of our immediate neighborhood.

“ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

The Centre for International Peace and Conflict Studies (CIPACS) aspires to be one of the leading centers for study in the causes of violent conflict and strategies for sustainable peace.

CIPACS seeks to strengthen the work of peace building around the world not just by educating new generations of scholars and practitioners but by creating new ways to advance just and sustainable peace. Guided by research and working closely with people in conflict zones, CIPACS faculty and alumni should contribute to effective, culturally nuanced instruments of nonviolent social and political change, which could ultimately lead to on-the-ground peace building. They also explore peace processes, negotiated settlements designed to secure the peace, global and local networks and institutions dedicated to containing violence and advancing human rights and economic development, restorative and retributive justice.

As scholars of strategic peace building, CIPACS faculty studies the connections among these disparate elements of peace building. Informed by this analysis, they devise comprehensive concepts, strategies, and public policies to enhance the effectiveness and coordination of local, regional, national, and transnational efforts to reduce violence and build the conditions for sustainable peace.

Situated in Kashmir, the site of one of the world’s most complex and protracted conflicts with varied dimensions of identity – religion and ethnicity – as well as economics and strategic concerns as major propellants, CIPACS provides the ideal setting for research on inter and intra-state war (including resource wars), terrorism, ethnic and religious conflicts, and human rights. Currently, CIPACS educates graduate students in the theory and the practice of strategic peace building. In future, CIPACS will open its doors to undergraduate and PhD programs.

Strong relationships among people lie at the heart of strategic peace building. As such, CIPACS strives to be part of the growing, worldwide company of peace builders – not only by advancing peace research and education at Islamic University, but by reaching out and welcoming to the conversation multiple publics dedicated to the cause of peace.

We are committed to helping students plan careers based on their academic results, personality traits as well as their capacity to learn new skills.

Career Counseling & Placements

The Office of Career Counseling and Placements provides a three way interface between the University, industry and the students. It actively helps students with personalized counseling, training, resume building and mock interviews. It endeavors to match the interest, knowledge and talents of each candidate to best fit organizations. It strives to help students make better, more informed and creative career choices and instill in them the confidence to be leaders and not just co-workers.

Islamic University recognizes the importance of additional skill sets that contribute towards a secure and long term career. To help students look beyond their professions to the larger questions of their careers, all our professional courses include compulsory training in soft skills. In this regard, the University recently organized a three day workshop on ‘Personality Development’ in association with the Aspire Group, New Delhi. We also have a full-time Career Counseling and Placement Cell staffed with professionals who can guide students and tailor their course content in a manner that will increase their chances of employment. Students are urged to visit the office of Career Planning regularly to focus on their objectives thus empowering them to compete in an increasingly difficult job market.

The Placement Cell ensures maximum placements for outgoing students, for example the previous and the recent batch of MBA students were sent for winter internships to Gabreil, Aircel, Metlife, Airtel, Reliance Money, Kingfisher, HCL, HDFC Bank, ICICI Prudential, 92.7 FM, J&K Bank, Bajaj Allianze, Wipro, Parsoli Corporation Vodafone and CIE to name a few. Post the internship, students felt a greater sense of confidence in making career choices, benefiting tremendously from the real world exposure. Besides, many of these organizations approached the University for recruiting the students.

Recently 22 7th semester B.Tech students were selected for final placement by Syntel Pune, Fujitsu, Capgemini Pun., Phoenix Maritime in a joint placement drive held at GECT Jammu. The University sends its MCA Students for Industrial training to HCL and GTT. The students of Food Technology have been trained with various food processing plants locally and in other states as well. Many students of our Journalism Department have already started their professional stints with various organizations such as Greater Kashmir, Times of India, NDTV, BBC, ETV and Doordarshan.

Unfortunately, just as the trip ended, Ladakh was struck by a massive cloud-burst. Advisory SystemEach student, at the time of his/her admission, is assigned a faculty advisor who guides the student throughout the course of his/her studies. The advising can be about planning of courses, balancing of credit load, adding or withdrawing courses, maintaining proper attendance or any other issues impacting a student’s academic performance and goals. There are regular advisory group meetings and students can also meet with their faculty advisor in an informal capacity.

The advisory system is the most essential feature for the semester system of education without which neither the student can comprehend the fast speed of imparting

instruction in various programs nor the mistakes and lacuna in running the system can be corrected. It is most vital that the students, the advisors, the teachers and the University administration all work together with full understanding and perfect coordination.

In view of this, each student in the University shall be assigned to an advisor by the concerned Dean at the time of his/her admission. The advisor continues to advise the student throughout the course of his studies.

ExaminationThe University has adopted a semester examination system based on a 10 point grading scale with the objective to expose students to continuous evaluation rather than focus only on term-end examinations. This system ensures that students develop the ability to study regularly and avoid extraordinary workload at the end of each semester. The system also persuades assignment-based learning and encourages students to perform consistently and not study in a sporadic manner, thereby creating the ability to solve practical problems among them. The semester-end examinations shall be conducted twice every year i.e autumn semester in the month of December and spring semester in the month of July.

In all semester examinations, 50% marks will be reserved for internal assessment. These could take the form of class tests/assignments/presentations, etc. or any other similar activity for which a comprehensive written record shall be maintained by the teachers, endorsed/attested by the Head of the Department concerned. The students are required to sit for three tests which are conducted after about 30, 60 and 90 days called first term, second term and end-of-semester examinations respectively. End-of-semester examinations carry a weightage of 50% and will be of 2 hours duration covering the entire subject matter of the course.

The first and second examinations will carry a weightage of 20 % of the total marks each and will be of about one hour duration. Assignments, projects presentations shall carry a weightage of 10% of marks for the course.

Minimum Credit Point Average RequirementWhile 4.5 out of 10.00 is the minimum credit point required to pass a subject, the minimum cumulative credit point average requirement for the degree at undergraduate level shall be 5.0 out of 10.00, provided that the student must have taken 24 and 48 credit hours of courses at the end of 2nd and 4th semester respectively. The minimum cumulative credit point average required at PG level shall be 5.50 (out of 10.00). A student who has achieved this minimum requirement shall be deemed to be on Good Standing.

scholastic probationIn order to pass a course, a student is required to maintain a Grade Point Average of 4.5 and 5.00 at the Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) levels respectively. In order to be in Good Standing at the University, a student will have to maintain an semester Grade Point Average of 5.0 and 5.5 at the UG and PG levels respectively. If a student fails to maintain an semester Grade Point Average (in the core courses of his/her discipline of study) of 5.00 and 5.5 at the UG and PG levels respectively, he/she will be placed on Scholastic Probation. If any student continues to be on Scholastic Probation for two consecutive semesters, the student is liable to be dropped from the University rolls. Department Heads and the Deans of the Schools of Study shall be liable for identifying such cases to the Dean – Academic Affairs on a semester-to-semester basis along with their notations on the cases.
