Every week, we can see magnitude of new

posters of multiple events, talks and competitions on

walls, pillars and boards all over our campus. It has

been a new phenomenon in our university for every

semester that students in various organizations and

groups conduct activities for particular purpose and

objectives. In a way, it is something to be proud of

because it shows that we are active and moving awayfrom typical bookworm syndrome of other

universities. The bookworm syndrome is a condition

where student are too focus on academic endeavours

and neglecting social involvement in the community

through co-curricular activities. In an international

university like us, the increasing number of student

activities is one of the yardsticks to measure the

involvement and technical competency among its

    students.

Actually, looking deeply into the situation,

things are not always as what they seem. Some of theevents never truly achieve their purpose but

organized just for the sake of organizing them for

yearly report. This problem is much related to dor-

mant clubs and associations. To prevent their clubs

from being terminated, club members have to

conduct activities which sadly do not achieve any

higher purpose. The second issue is quite ironic. Many

events do not simply meaning many students are

involved. It is actually the same students who kept

involving in one event after another due to their

experience and expertise. This in some way

inhibit new apprentice to grow as well asinternational students to get involved.

The third contention is about the

impact of events on the target group. A

successful event is not measured by less

    problem mentioned during post-mortem,

or the number of participants but the

ability of the program to produce desired

outcome as per mentioned in the objective.

For example, and exhibition conducted to

bring awareness about career must really

    provide convincing and sufficient exhibit

materials for students. The exhibition must

not be having a lot of visitors just because

of free gifts given but because the

    Highlights

    2

exhibition in really informational to others. The problem in

many events conducted, there was no review of whether

the objectives stated in the proposal are achieved or not.

The organizers are just satisfied because the event is al-

    ready over.

Therefore, it is vital for us to look into the quality of

events which is organized to make sure the objective of theevents is achieved successfully and it benefits the students

and also the university. As there is a famous quotation from

Mahatma Gandhi; It is the quality of our work which will

please God not the quantity. An excellent well-rounded

team of students will be able to produce a quality event.

So, it is important for students to be dedicated, competent,

and versatile to have a quality event which will bring an

impact to the university but also the society.

According to the Project Manager of EMS2010,

    NurFarahin Mahadi (3rd

    year 1st

    Semester CE), a quality

event is an event which goes precisely with the goal of theevent which is being organize. There is no worth of

organizing manifold events and at the end of the day we

did not achieve the goal of it. Besides that, Mohammad

Taufik b Ibrahim (President MAKNA) gave an analogy which

it is better to have a fresh apple rather than a big rotten

watermelon. A quality event plays a major role as it

contributes to the success of an organisation not the

    quantity of events.

In a nutshell, it is quality rather than

quantity that matters. Therefore, students in

UTP need to be trained how to organize qualityevents that will bring a huge name for our uni-

versity on the eye of the world. We are not say-

ing that it is wrong to have large quantity of

events but we are just concern of organizing

many events with the best quality that will bene-

fit the students, university and our society.

    Exclusive Interview

with Professor Robert N. Ginsburg who is widely known in the academic arena as well as in the industry

for the field of marine geology. After completing his PhD in Marine Geology under the supervision of

Professor Ginsburg he had an outpour of job offers. Eventually his choice was driven by the company that

can provide the best working conditions in terms of its technology and research work and that was SHELL.

The next years of his life can be traced all over the globe, literally! So far he has travelled and lived

in about eleven countries, to name a few are Pakistan, Abu Dhabi, Oman, the Bahamas and the list goeson. Highlighting his experience in Oman where he was an explorationist, finding oil fields for Shell, he had

to live in the desert which was 700km away from the nearest town. Meanwhile in Columbia he shared

that he had the opportunity to ride a helicopter filled with bullet holes. Lastly, his period in Eastern Europe

was right after when the Berlin wall fell and the end of the era of the Iron Curtain. His last posting before

he came to Malaysia was in England. Hearing to his experiences and stories you cant help but feel

fascinated of this person who has not only travelled the world but experienced the different cultures and

environment of each corner of the globe.

Finally coming to his stay in UTP, when asked what was the determining factor that confirmed his decision

to take up a position as a lecturer here; his answer was simple, the people he said. The warmth and sense of

welcome that he and his wife received here in Malaysia sealed the deal for them and Dr. Bernard made the call that

UTP, Malaysia would be his last home before retiring. Commenting on the students in this university, he is

delightfully pleased with the eagerness to study and gain knowledge that he sees in our students. He also adds that

progression in terms of character and maturity can also be seen in the students which are always an added bonus to

an educator. Nevertheless, some traits that are disapproving in his eyes are the punctuality of UTP students but all in

all he immensely enjoys the learning and teaching environment in UTP.

Besides his commitment as a lecturer here in UTP and carrying out his research about carbonates under his

research project SEACARL he is an active environmentalist. Even though he has only settled down in Malaysia for

about two years he has iniated and been an outspoken advocate for preserving the limestone hills of the Kinta

Valley, one of Malaysias geological heritage. Numerous publications in terms of books, journals and articles are to

name some of his contributions to the environment. You cant help but feel awed and a bit overwhelmed with theaccomplishments that he has made in everything that he puts his mind to it. You are inspired by his relationship with

his students, his awareness for the environment and simply his way of living his life. No rock is left unturned and

unexplored. For every country that he has lived in and worked at he dived into the culture there head first and was

willing to learn and adapt to each new situation.

Having sat with him for more or less than two hours, there was still so much that I wanted to know and ask

about him. Nonetheless talking and meeting with him made me believe that the life that he led was not out of reach.

The kind of career and journey that he went through is certainly in our grasp, one that you would be proud and

content with when looking back maybe fifty or sixty years from now; A quality life that we all inspire to lead and live.

background. We believe that to be an international

university, it is a waste of knowledge transfer if we do not

have much interaction within the community that consists

of students from various countries. In order to pursue the

togetherness among UTP students, we are going to devise

a 5 Years Master Plan of Integration this year,

Insya-Allah. There will be representative from all races

and countries to work out the master plan and we will

release it by the end of this year. It will be a kick-start for

    good networking with each other.

Is there any system used in the MPP to ensure quality

    and successful work?

During the semester break in December 2009, MPPUTP

camped at UTP for about 16 days to set up the vision and

mission of MPPUTP. We started from SWOT Analysis, the

method to analyse the organization until we produce our

scorecard. The scorecard is the combination of strategies

to achieve the vision and mission of MPPUTP. In order to

measure the works as MPPUTP, we do use the Key

Performance Indicator (KPI) in our general and

department scorecard. To ensure the quality of works isparallel with the scorecard that has been set up earlier,

    we will revise our scorecard at least twice per semester;

one before the mid-semester break and the other is on

    the end of the semester.

Professionalism is one of the most essential parts of

good management. How does MPPUTP adopt this

    concept?

Professionalism is a standard that govern how members

of a profession make decisions and most importantly, run

the decision. MPPUTP this year stresses on theprofessional ethics within the organization in line with the

fourth mission of MPPUTP which is to uphold

professionalism. Some strategies have been planned for

this year in order to inculcate the line-up of MPPUTP with

the professional ethics which are leadership program,

engagement with other universities, and implement

several rules and regulations. We also practice

professionalism throughout our events in terms of attire,

meeting ethics, line of authority and punctuality. Through

the exposure and sharing of knowledge, I believe we will

be the role model of a professional entity in UTP.

    =Quality?

    Interview

    5

Could you please tell us a little bit about the

standard of operation of MPPUTP? How it functions

    within the community?

MPP is the council that represents students. We are

in line with the well rounded quality that UTP stresses

out on the mission statement of this university. AsMPPUTP, we hold the responsibility to voice out

students opinion for the improvement of the

university. Throughout the entire mediums that we

have, we are trying our best to assist students in arising

issues regarding their welfare and life in UTP. Many

engagements with the students are in our planner this

year in order to nurture oneness with each other. Based

on the issues that they arise, MPPUTP will investigate

and conduct researches for the respective issues to

ensure that we can bring it forward to the top

management with credibility. If students rights are

affected, we will fight for students.

MPPUTP is aware about the high expectations that the

public has. What are the values uphold (work ethics) in

    this organization?

This time around MPPUTP is stressing on togetherness

among UTP students. Our motto this year is Pursuing

Togetherness. This motto has two major aspects that

MPPUTP wants to bring to the students. The first part is

about moving forward together with MPPUTP. We are

aware that the most important thing in being an MPP is

the trust from students. MPPUTP is currently striving to

rebrand the organization to be well functioning within

the community. The second part is to nurture the

togetherness among UTP students regardless of their

    7/12

    Interview

Rakan Exco is a supporting group of the MPPUTP. What are

their tasks and how do their roles help the students as a

    whole?

Rakan EXCO is not only the supporting group for MPPUTP.

They are the backbone of MPPUTP and the potential leader to

replace the tenure of the HICOM and EXCO of MPPUTP. There

are several tasks and roles to be given to them in order togroom them with the works as MPP. They will be involved

with the EXCO and HICOM in the earlier stages starting from

brainstorming sessions until the final stage of working to solve

issues of UTP students. Besides that, MPPUTP also has a long

term planning for the Rakan EXCO. Rakan EXCO will be sent to

leadership programs and also an expert group in order to

develop them to be better leaders.

Dealing with the management and students both require

different approaches. With the spirit of leadership, what are

the steps that MPPUTP take to satisfy both demanding

    needs?

Before we start the works as MPPUTP, one should have the

mindset that we are not fighting for the noble prize but we are

fighting for the right of our people. Leroy Eims said, A leader

is one who sees more than others see, who sees farther than

others see and who sees before the others do. MPP will

always analyse the issues requested from both parties and

identify what is best for the sake of the students.

MPPUTP has been conducting lots of events every year.

However, there are sayings that MPP work organization,

planning, and management are even poorer than others. Anycomments?

Different people have their own views and we appreciate the

comment and criticism. For your information, for the past

years, we have successfully organized many large scale events

such as Convofair, TEC, Titian Budi and many more. These

programs keep on improving from time to time. Regarding to

the question again, I would say that it is a factor of crowd

speculation. What is sad is that until now the majority of UTP

students do not have the knowledge culture and are not

reacting actively with our knowledge related and culture

bridging programs. Therefore, when there are some defectsseen in these events, students tend to suddenly become

attentive and blaming instead of ever seeing the good

objectives of the programs. Students tend to see the bad side

instead of realizing the goals of the activities itself. After

criticizing, there are no further actions or feedback properly

done in order to improve the programs. Their message does

not reach us until it is too late. Criticizing now becomes back

biting. And for your information, only a few people have ever

directly emailed me to give out opinions, criticisms and

suggestions for MPPUTP. Where are the remaining thousands

    of UTP students?

Members of MPP are in fact students. How will they practice

result-based actions while they themselves are busy as a

    student?

20 years ago, South Korea was very much underdeveloped

compared to Malaysia at that time. In fact, there have been

many South Korean delegations sent to Malaysia to

understand how we manage and develop our country and to beable to maintain stability between many ethnics here. However,

currently, South Korea is much more developed than us. Ever

wondered why? This is because there is a distinct difference

between our thinking and the Koreans. We are emphasizing too

much on result-based actions. Focusing too much on this may

demotivate us when our results are not achieved. The Koreans

however, use effort-oriented actions. They realized that the

more effort we put the higher the success rate that they will

achieve. MPPUTP now is currently adopting this strategy. And as

students and all the busy works of being an MPP, we are striving

hard I mean really hard and putting in all our efforts to

rebrand MPPUTP and move it forward. Let us all be optimisticabout this.

In management, nepotism and cronyism is deemed as

unethical. MPPUTP has always been smeared by those

    allegations. Is it true?

As far as I am concerned, there is no cronyism or

nepotism that happens within MPPUTP. That is why MPP

conducted Election Awareness Campaign not just too any

specific individuals but to all. Even in the events, there was no

cronyism practiced because decisions are well made in

collaboration with the management. Selective criteria are set upupon candidates that will lead such events. I assure you that we

provide a lot of training to UTP students in various events

throughout the years. However, sadly enough from our

database and experience, only 20% of UTP students are involved

in the student programs. It has always been the same people

over and over again. The remaining chooses to remain silent,

not participating and only becoming the audience. One thing

that I want to stress, if there is any misjudgement please contact

the HICOM. This year we want to change the students

perceptions to that of a more knowledge based. Contact us if

    you have any suggestions.

Many parts of the MPP function have been taken over by other

bodies such as RCSU and Academic clubs. How is MPP going to

redefine its role to become more effective and efficient?

In this issue we should look into the positive aspects. It actually

is an indicator that students are starting to know their rights. We

are mostly Petronas Scholars here which often forget about the

students rights. We can now see International Students

Committee (ISC) and Residential College Support Unit (RCSU)

fighting for our rights. In this issue, we will clarify the job scope

of SRCUTP in coordination with other student organizations.

There will be clear distribution of job scope as MPP is the

highest student body. Through the Majlis Persidangan Presiden

Kelab or MPPK we can solve this issue.

    Another contention on whether UTP

graduates are really well-rounded is in the often

    controversial Consequence Management (CM)

ruling that PETRONAS enforces on its scholars. A

quick search on the minimum requirements for

Harvard resulted in me returning empty handed

but nevertheless, Im certain that if Harvard

graduates were subjected to the same ruling,

they wouldnt be all up in arms proclaiming the

injustice that has been set upon them but rather

they would either laugh at the low standards or

buckle down and work hard to improve.

Instead of tackling the issue by improving

our standards, we prefer to avoid the issue by

questioning Why 2.50? Why 2.75? Oh my God,

3.0?. During Minggu Aluan Siswa, we were

constantly reminded that in the university, you

wont be spoon-fed. Have we forgotten about

that? Well we might have, but the powers that

cling onto our signature on the contracts that we

have signed have not. So as young adults, I urge

everyone to realize the situation we are in.

On the other end of the spectrum, UTP is

known to produce graduates brimming with

confidence and superior soft skills. The

plentitude of events that student holds keeps on

shaping and moulding our graduates to face

work life later. Without all these events, life in

UTP just wouldnt be the same and most of us

would end up being bored easily. Still, there must

always be a balance between whatever

extracurricular activities we choose to participate

in and our academic obligations. A kind

reminder, it is the latter and not the former that

is the real reason why we are spending our time

    in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

So, can we really be the Harvard of the East?Sure, why not? But the journey begins now.

    Introspective

    8

    Welcome back to another semester

in UTP! Now, a new semester brings with it

a whole lot of other news; a new chance

to improve on our results, new experiences,

new subjects and much more. But I would

like to highlight a certain type of new that I

encountered in my first week back: new

    faces.

The new semester introduced to me

a new face in the form of my lecturer.

Actually, Im pretty sure it introduced this

particular new face to many of the readersas well as he has just been hired to teach in

UTP. I wont be judging him or giving him a

progress report on his work so far (I mean

come on, it has only been a week) but one

thing that he mentioned in class caught my

interest: UTP wants to be the Harvard of

    the East.

He then went on to exclaim that he

hoped one day, each and every one of us in

that classroom would hold a doctorate.

Wow. That was my first reaction.

My second one was to applaud him in his

ideals because dare I say it, I doubt whether

UTP could ever be considered the Harvard

of Malaysia, let alone the Harvard of the

East in our current state. Im not saying this

to antagonize anyone or damper UTPs

image, but reflecting upon myself, are UTP

    graduates really quality graduates?

To quote a friend of mine, No DC,

no life la bro, and I think therein lies one of

the major issues in this whole quality

graduate debate. UTP graduates do not

have the knowledge culture imbedded intheir daily routines. We instead focus more

on the entertainment aspects of life such as

watching a late night movie, jamming with

our band, going out for a date, etc.

There are instances when the search for

knowledge does take over our life, as an

    example during the study week.

However, these instances are more of

the exception rather than the rule. They

are too far and few in between.

Now, compare this to a normal

day in Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris

(UPSI). Im sure most of us think were

better than them, right? But I dont see

that when I compare the amount ofpeople crammed in their library, on a

normal day I remind you, with the

emptiness of our so-called state of the

    art, award-winning IRC. Even during

study week, Im sure we barely stand a

fight against UPSI on this matter. How

many of us have actually used up our

limit of borrowing 12 books per month

from the IRC? Or how many of us

actually do research and precise citation

    whilst completing our assignment rather

    than just Googling?

The quality of aperson's life is in direct

    proportion to theircommitment to

excellence, regardlessof their chosen field of

    endeavor.

    Heglig savanna field. During nighttime,

movements were strictly limited due to

attacks potentially by wild animals and rebel

    groups. In addition, nighttime temperature

was very cold. A huge day-night temperature

gap means that our body is constantly

exposed to various illnesses. The Thar Jath

hitch was at the peak of locust attack season.

Millions of huge locust swarmed the drillingrigs until all on-board personnel were forced

to cover all openings of our coveralls and faces to avoid being

    bitten said Ahmad Bakri

One of the incidents that I remember most was the Abyei

resolution. said Bakri with a wide grin on his face. A smalltown with a lot of petroleum potentials, the territory was a fight

between the North and South government of Sudan. On the

resolution day, thousands of soldiers from both sides were

mobilized near Abyei ready for a war if any side dissatisfy and

attacks the other side. Can you imagine your feelings whenyoure first time surrounded by thirty-plus soldiers and people

heavily armed with pistols and riflesand you dont even haveone he said while recalling his memories on that occasion.

Despite these tough working environments, Sudanese

engineers were very optimistic in guiding him to regarding the

technical details of the drilling fluids and operations.

This practical has truly taught me the meaning of putting asideevery problem and fears you have in your mind in order to

produce quality work outputs he corresponded. Its yourfocus that is most important. Tell me, how can you produce a

quality workmanship when your mind is somewhere else?

When asked about any driving factors that kept him motivated

during tough times, Ahmad Bakri Zubir highly believes that

parents-child relation is a motivation key. It is the prayer and

dua from your parents that makes you unbreakable he said. However, nowadays, it is a shame to see many youngstersnowadays feels embarrassed when having their parents close to

themyoungsters nowadays take their parents for granted

Ahmad Bakri Zubir is currently in fourth year first semester

studying Petroleum Engineering with major in Drilling and

    Production Technology.

ooks like an ordinary atmosphere, Ahmad Bakri Zubir

thought as he peeped out from inside the small 100

people-seated Boeing aircraft. It was a very sunny

afternoon, and he was walking eagerly out from theaircraft after an exhausting 9-hours flight to Sudan. As

he stepped his foot outside from the air-conditioned terminal, he felt

as if the air was very light and breathing was becoming quite difficult.

Thats when he realized that the weather was a blazing 52 degreescelcius & air humidity was far below than expected.

    Pre-internship Challenge The Mindset

Recalling his pre-internship experience when he

was seeking for a placement, the competition to get

a place overseas is really hard due to his average

CGPA and the global economic problem. However

he remained optimistic for a place overseas to gain

the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The first time I

told people that I want to do my internship overseas

not many were convinced that I can get a

    placement he said. But theres a principle I al-ways put in my mind dont look at the results;

instead, look at your efforts. In addition, I see

problems in life as challenges. For the record,Bakri had personally sent his resume to 25 local

companies and 14 international companies before

obtaining a firm placement in Scomi Oiltools

    Overseas (M) Sudan Operations.
