Value Chain
• Pressure for Risk sharingand serialized launch ofnew products leads tooutsourcing of 70-80%of the value chain
• Not only Build to Print butalso Engineering isincreasingly outsourced
• Tier 1 takes oversignificant responsibilitiesfor the product in all lifecycle phases
• Tier 1 will manage moreand moresubcontracting, evenmore (in numbers) thanthe OEM

The worldwide collaboration network changed drastically in the last decades
• the role of the suppliers and their involvement in the Product Life Cycle haschanged (more design outsourcing, more cross enterprise engineering, …)
• the OEM and entire supply chain has to manage the complexity ofcommunication in a heterogeneous environment
PHENIX –STD TF 18/09/08 EADS 5
• The 3D geometry is a key driver formultidisciplinary and concurrentinternal/external engineering.
• 3D GD&T/PMI will replace the classical 2Ddrawing set.
• Integrated Technology Processes(Composite, Electrical, …) are based onthe 3D information chain.
• Even document based informationbecomes model based (ex. requirementdata base instead of specificationdocument)
Long Term Retentions becomes a newchallenge.

What are eBusiness Standards
eBusiness Standards impact our PLM environment on the following levels
• Data Model Standards (ex. STEP AP 214)
• Process related Standards (ex. CMII, CMMI, …)
• Data Formats (ex. XML, JT, U3D, …)
• Service related Standards (OMG PLM Services, …)

Scope of eBusiness Standards
eBusiness Standards are applicable to:
• all PLM related disciplines (ConfigurationManagement, Mechanical Engineering – CAD, …) andtheir interfaces (exchange of configured data)
• product data interoperability with customers, partnerand suppliers
• all product life cycle phases (from feasibility todisposal)
PHENIX –STD TF 18/09/08 EADS 10
Benefits for PLM and Business
Benefits related to eBusiness Standards
– enable exchange and collaboration in a worldwideheterogeneous environment
– enable multidisciplinary collaboration
– supports E2E processes
– enhanced use of product data through data modelsand data integration (instead of isolated documents)
– facilitate the use of COST tools
– facilitate migration scenarios
– assure compliance to legislation (ex. Long TermArchiving)

Light viewing EADS standardisation activities:
For what purpose ?
• Use cases / test cases: not only visualisation & analysis
• Management of consistency of STEP AP’s and 3D Light Viewing Standards
Which one to chose ?
• Competition between U3D/JT/3DXML and proprietary formats
• Support from the industries, the software suppliers, the standardisation groups, themarket
How to deploy them ?
• Provide use cases / test cases
• Proof of concepts, tests and deployment

• One Standard to be supported by tools higherpressure on CAD/PLM providers, more COTS
• Common evolution of standards, shared efforts
• Highest interoperability (common use in aerospace &automotive)

PHENIX –STD TF 18/09/08 EADS 17
Summary
• Without a highly integrated PLM environment it will not be possible
anymore to develop complex products and to master the global
supply chain.
• Information and product data will be increasingly modelled and less
drawing/documents based.
Electronic data needs to be managed (release and LTA) along
the life cycle
• eBusiness standards are key enablers for PLM to manage
exchange, sharing, visualisation, quality control and long term
archiving.
• EADS is actively working on eBusiness open standards.
• EADS started cooperation's (ASD SSG) to develop and deploy
eBusiness standards in Europe and worldwide.
