Port gives councils an $8M boostPort Nelson has given Nel-son City Council a nice shot in the arm following last De-cember’s costly floods – pro-viding a “special dividend” of $4 million. It was announced yesterday by Port chairman Nick Patterson that both shareholders – NCC and Tasman District Council – would get $4 mil-lion each. “Port Nelson has the ability to make available to the shareholders this special dividend, which we see as very timely and which we hope will be well received, given the costs to the coun-cils of remedial works fol-lowing the recent adverse weather events.”Nick says the decision to pay the fully imputed spe-cial dividend came about after a review of the business environment the port oper-ates in.

“We have looked at our short and medium term plans in response to predicted busi-ness conditions, reviewed and updated our financial projections, updated our forecasts and reviewed the

balance sheet,” he says. “With this com-pleted we have also reviewed our posi-tion in respect of the insurance risk resulting from the Christchurch earth-quake and the in-creased costs and risk exposure it has brought.”

Accounting for those in-creased risks, Nick says the port was still able to provide the dividend. NCC mayor Aldo Miccio says the dividend won’t di-rectly be used for flood relief as the council has a policy to put all dividends into debt repayments. “But it is great news, and will help keep our interest payments down.”

Fifteen hundred and three children were winners at the Weet Bix TRY-athlon, completing a swim, bike and run all in the name of giving it a go. Although inclement weather threat-ened the event, the 20 year anniver-sary “couldn’t be better,” with Nel-son’s trademark sun shining against

the odds.“It’s all about getting kids away from the Playstation, and the TV, whatev-er else they do; to get out, get some fresh air, get some exercise, get some good breakfast,” says Ettienne Mc-Clintock, of the senior management team for the event.

Group to ‘sell’ Nelson sign

The Nelson sign that is for sale on Trade Me. Photo: Rosie Thomsen.

The “Nelson Live the Day” sign on Atawhai Dr has been posted on auc-tion site Trade Me and a for sale sign attached to it.The sign was decorated several times ahead of last years Rugby World Cup by “guerilla artists” Ro Guish and friends. It is understood the same group is behind the latest prank. On Trade Me the auction has a starting

bid of $500 and says that it “has now done its dash in serving the Nelson Community”.Potential buyers are also told: “Sign has easy side of road access for fast and speedy removal, preferably under cloak of darkness.”The auction is up for the second time after the first auction was removed by Trade Me.

My Love, a 1947 Chris-Craft Racing Runabout owned by John Malthus

was launched for the first time at the NZ Antique and Classic Boat

Show held at Lake Rotoiti over the weekend. The boat was awarded the

People’s Choice Award. The Jens Hansen Cup for best vessel overall went to the 16 foot mini-tug Little

Toot, owned by Stoke man Clint Skelton. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The unhappy villageMore than 30 Waimea Village residents attracted hundreds of honks from drivers supporting their bid to stop owners Michael and Carolyn Wright once again raising the fees they pay.Holding signs like “bullying, intimidation” and “2 Wrights make it wrong” the mainly elderly residents attracted plenty of support. The action comes after Michael and Carolyn de-cided to lift the service fees from $80 a month in 2010 to $284 this year. Currently residents pay $125 per month for services like maintenance of the common ground, weekly van rides to Rich-mond and green waste collection. Residents own their own homes and pay normal council rates on top of the monthly fees. Michael says the increases are needed for the vil-lage to break even and the protesters aren’t fully aware of the facts.“I don’t have a problem [with the protest], it’s a free country. Unfortunately they’ve been misled

by the media, their [residents] committee and representatives of the council. They don’t have an understanding of the issue other than it’s a big increase they are facing.”Michael estimated just ten protesters and said it was confined to the morning. When told the protesters were back out on the road and had tri-pled in size by the afternoon he said he was not aware of it.There does appear to be some light at the end of the tunnel though. Local businessman John Davies has come on board to try to sort out the dispute and reach a settlement between the resi-dents and owners. Michael says he holds little faith in the negotiation though.“There is someone negotiating from the com-mittee at the moment. I’m happy with that pro-cedure but I very much doubt it will have a con-clusion because I believe the committee will not accept the negotiator’s outcome.”

Waimea Village residents protest another proposed rate increase by the owners of the village in front of passing traffic in Richmond last Friday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Big celebration for small peopleThere was music, fun, and excited children everywhere as Nelson’s kindergartens cel-ebrated Children’s Day. Several get-togethers were organised throughout the region, allowing kids from neighbouring kindergartens to mix and mingle.Donna Bishop, of Victory Square Kindergarten, says their long lunch with Nelson South Kindergarten was a great way for the children to meet new friends, and see oth-ers who they’d know from the community. “All the children are just mixing in beautifully, they’re having a ball. We’re

definitely going to do this again.” Stoke, Nayland and Birchwood kindergartens had an exciting morning at Broadgreen Rose Garden, with Kath Bee keep-ing the kids entertained with her well known and loved music. The sun wasn’t bright but the children were, with Stoke, Nayland and Birch-wood each sporting a different colour; yellow, red and blue respectively. Gaye Wood, who helped organise the event, was happy with how successful it was. “The children love it; they know they’re special, but to-day they’re super special.”

Navy sails back into townThe last time HMNZS Wellington cruised in to Nelson the frigate was commanded by Bruce McLennan the son of former Nelson mayor Roy McLennan. Roy was on hand with a group of WWII Navy veterans as the HM-NZS Wellington returned to Tas-man Bay and opened its decks to the public.Roy who was mayor of Nelson from 1971 to 1980 recalled that his son Bruce was a picture of man-ners. “When he came off deck, his

mother and I were waiting and to my surprise he bent down and kissed his mother in front of the crew. I thought he was more self-conscious than that,” recalls Roy. Nelson is still represented on HM-NZS Wellington by combat system specialist Petty Officer Duncan Anderson, an old boy of Nelson College. The veterans and public enjoyed their tour of the 85 metre Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) fresh from a mission in the Southern Ocean.

The crew of around 40 young men and women steamed to the sub Antarctic, Auckland and Campbell Islands to re-supply and change-out DOC workers studying local flora and fauna. It wasn’t all smooth sailing on the way to Nelson with the infamous West Coat weather causing the OPV to broach and send a few unwary sailors out of their bunks. “Testing weather is part of the job, and it was a good test to see who in the crew hadn’t tied down their gear,” says Duncan.

A convoy of classics will wind its way around the upper South Island in hon-our of Nelson Building Society. The Vintage Car Club has brought to-gether 17 veteran vehicles and count-ing, everything from a near century old 1918 Buick, to a comparably modern 1977 Triumph. The five-day tour will visit all seven NBS branches from Nelson to Greymouth, covering over 800 kilometres. The Vin-tage Car Club will take the opportunity

to personally thank the people of NBS for the support they show to their club and the community, and to congratulate them, as New Zealand’s oldest Building Society, on their coming 150 year anni-versary.The tour sets off from the Nelson NBS branch on March 15, with cars joining and leaving the tour wherever it suits them. While in Greymouth the tour will stop off for the West Coast Scenicland Rally. The Vintage Car Club was started 45 years ago, with over 30 branches nation-

wide. The NBS tour is attracting “tour-ists” from as far afield as Oamaru, with many cars built in the 1920s, making them more-travelled than their drivers.Peter Havill, Nelson’s branch manager, says NBS branches are looking forward to the visit from the NVCC. “We at NBS are very appreciative of the support of the Vintage Car Club and its members. We believe that support-ing sport, cultural and recreational ac-tivities is a way of promoting a sense of pride in our community and an attitude of success in our region.”

Autumn has arrived in full glory, and hopefully some of those leaves, that are turning into beautiful shades of orange and deep reds, have not all been blown away with our weekends winds.

My focus for the week: - Cotton on Kids. This is a wonderful place to discover the latest in Kids clothing at Cotton On. Shop for boys - fleece, jackets, tees, pants, denim, polos, shirts, shorts, tanks, and for girls - dresses, skirts, jewellery and hair accessories and so much more. The sparkles, frills and tulle are every little girl’s dress up dreams come true. While you feast in the fairy tale surroundings of the store, your little ones can play, happily colouring in and be entertained while still having you in their view.

I like to think the most important thing to remember is that you can wear fabulous clothes and gorgeous shoes, but you have got to have a good spirit on the inside. That is what is going to make you ready to face each and every day.

Have a fabulous week and I look forward to your visit at our Fashion Island

TUESDAY 6 March 2012

Is there really love at first sight? I say there is.

Forty three years ago as a young 16 year old I spent the Christmas holi-days with my brother in Westport, visiting his girlfriend’s parents. I was asked to go to the local super-ette to get some bread. There was a gorgeous guy behind the check-out and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. I kept asking my hosts if they needed anything at the shop, so I could go back to see him.Two days after the initial meeting I saw him at an event in town, and told my brother and his girlfriend that ‘the guy from the shop’ was

standing nearby. My brother’s girlfriend knew him, so she went and spoke to him and invited him to join us. The following night the four of us went to the pictures to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but we were heading back to Christchurch the next day. Un-beknown to me my brother had given him our phone number in Christchurch because he was go-ing to be attending Teacher’s College there. One month later I received a phone call from ‘you know who’. I was really happy because I hadn’t stopped thinking about him since I had arrived home.Eighteen months later my sister rang me and wanted me to go shopping with her

to buy vegetables. After she dropped me home my boyfriend, Jim, picked me up as planned, and we went for a drive to

New Brighton beach. We were sitting in a Morris Minor in the carpark and he asked me if I would like to get engaged. I then discov-ered that while my sister had me

out of the way, he had gone to see my father to ask if he could marry

me. I was only 17 at the time. We mar-ried 20 months later. And now after three children, two grand-children and our 40th anniversary next year, Jim and I are still happily married and tell each other every day that we love each other.

“It feels like home. – Pam Bethune, resident.

Several thousand steps were taken to get closer to a cure, with thousands of volunteers trekking diligently around Saxton Field to raise funds for the Can-cer Society over the weekend. Brightly dressed, they braved the low overnight temperatures. “It must have

been five degrees at four am,” says Rachael Watson. But even the cold couldn’t bring down their spirits. “Eve-ryone carried on; it was good. It was never a lonely walk.”They were rewarded with a bright, sun-ny morning, when the closing ceremo-

ny was followed by the final lap, which everyone walked. Many at the relay had been touched by cancer, whether it was the survivors, walking a lap to open the event, or those with family and friends who had battled it.

It was an emotional ex-change as a Nelson family was presented with their un-cle’s World War One service medal after it was found in the sleepout of an empty flat in South Auckland. Private William George Frost fell in the battle of Messines in Belgium on June 7, 1917 and nearly 95 years later a physical recognition of his sacrifice has come back home.Constable Matthew Green had to fight back the tears as he told the story of Pri-vate Frost’s heroism on the Western Front, where he was wounded five times before be-ing killed in action at 20 years of age. Matthew, who has a number of servicemen in his family, then told the story of the medal’s latest journey from obscurity to the hands of Frost’s family in Nelson. When the medal was hand-ed in to constable Matthew Green at the Takanini police station it wasn’t in great con-

dition and its origins were unknown, but along with his wife Samantha, Matthew set about restoring the quality and searching for an owner.Matthew says they knew the significance of the medal and that the most important thing was to get it home. After hav-ing the silver cleaned the cou-ple was able to see the serial number and the search began for Private Frost’s family. “Auckland Museum came up with his service record and a brief statement of his service and then I came across his family tree,” says Matthew.William’s nephew Tony Frost says he thought the medal was gone forever and now it’s back where it belongs as a family heirloom. “It will now be passed on down through the family,” says Tony. Tony and Beth Frost attended the ceremony at Nelson po-lice station with Tony’s sisters Beryl Watts and Peggy Greg-son who were all very grateful for the efforts of Matthew and Samantha.

The event is strictly “BYO plates, cups and cutlery,” encouraging those who at-tend to join in the with school’s no waste policy. Organisers expect this year’s event to be as suc-cessful as last where over six hundred attended and there was “only half a bag of waste at the

end.” Kids will love the water slide and bouncy castle, while parents can enjoy the chocolate wheel and raffle, with great prizes and all pro-ceeds going to an expansion of the IT equip-ment at the school. Alicia Reeve is a registered nurse and educator for the Billings Ovulation Method of Natural Family Planning, teaching the method to couples and presenting education sessions to community groups and health professionals. Appointments are held at St Luke’s Health centre. Home Visits are also available. The method is used by millions of women worldwide, validated by eminent international scientists and successfully trialled by the World Health Organisation, having greater than 99% reliability. Learning to identify natural signals of fertility, women can use the method to achieve or avoid pregnancy and safeguard reproductive health. Easy to learn, it can be used through all stages of a woman’s fertile lifetime (including breast feeding and in perimenopause). Billings has helped many sub-fertile couples conceive, including those trying for more than two years or who have had failed IVF attempts. Billings is different from other NFP methods; doesn’t involve counting days (like the unreliable rhythm method) or monitoring temperature. The method focusses on daily charting of mucous sensation and includes 4 simple rules. 4-6 appointments are usually required to confidently use the method. Couples are encouraged to share responsibility for learning and using the method.

The Stoke Rugby Club has an enviable position in Nelson as being one of its oldest clubs, with a past history of Nelson’s great players and with a solid and respected following. It is said that a Stoke player plays the game not only with his or her natural skills, but with a Stoke heart. I see this as one of the great things about Stoke Rugby. We may have taken a hammering last year, with injuries and changes in the structure, but the men and women, from junior grades to Senior A’s that went out in all weathers every weekend, played with heart. They gave their all, and that is all a true Stoke supporter can ever ask. I know they will do it all again this season. This year we will again be having a slight change in the Senior A’s but we feel we have the right mix to be true contenders for the title once again. In the junior grades, it is fantastic to see the same enthusiasm and drive. This will ensure that we have a strong future in Nelson Rugby. I personally am looking forward to a great year in rugby. See you on the sidelines. Regards,Mark Vinsen (Stoke Rugby Coordinator).

In 2011, in conjunction with Arrow Inter-national, the Stoke Rugby Club presented a proposal to the Nelson City Council whereby the council demolishes the existing changing rooms/toilets/showers at Greenmedows and in partnership with Stoke Rugby, Stoke Ten-nis, Nelson Cricket and other partners, have the council rebuild those facilities with pro-vision for a second story housing the above partners. We received favourable comment to our submission and we are hopeful that the first draft plan in June 2012 includes this project. We await with eager anticipation!2012 is shaping up to be a great season for us with most of the management/players/coaches in place with good numbers attend-ing pre-season training. There is also the prospect of a “golden oldies” president’s team and we look forward to that. Thanks and good luck to all Stoke teams in 2012,Buddy Graham,President.

Tom McKay is the upper South Island manager for JLE Electrical, based in Nelson. He leads an expert team of electricians, and encourages his employees’ talents and interests, so as to keep them motivated and continue expanding the collective skill set. “We are deploying our Tasman guys around New Zealand for their expertise in marine, building automation and solar power, as there is demand for people highly skilled in these areas,” says Tom. A focus for the company is its involvement in aquaculture, and it proudly supports the local boat building industry as well as working on floating salmon farming structures. They are passionate about boating and fishing, so understand the importance of quality work and maintenance. JLE Electrical is now installing solar panels on buildings and connecting to the main grid. If the system produces more energy than is consumed, then certain power companies will credit the extra. Not only will you never have to worry about increases in power costs, you will likely receive a substantial return on investment. For quality service from a kiwi-owned, nationally-renowned company, call the “industrial strength electricians” at JLE Electrical.

‘stoke it up’

Despite surrendering the final in the dying stages last year, the Stoke Women are back looking for silverware. One of the main focuses for the team this year is increasing the all-round skill level base. With a wealth of knowledge hidden away in the brains of the more senior members of the side, there is plenty to pass down as the team looks to go back to basics. There is a broad range of ages and skill levels in the team and to level out the playing, so to speak, they are hoping to give every member of the squad their fair share of opportunities to learn new skills or to increase existing ones.Another ongoing focus of is to nurture and promote women’s rugby. Women’s rugby has experienced a lull in numbers in the last few years and the Stoke outfit wants to encourage young women to get out and give it a go, not only for the physical fitness side, but for the support and encouragement that belonging to a tight-knit team can provide. And of course, bring home the cup.

Organisers of the inaugural Nelson Nines Rugby League Tournament say they hope to create a party and festival atmosphere at Trafalgar Park, much like the Wellington Sevens, and with a family pass selling for only $25 they are hoping it will be a full house. Teams from Wellington, Christchurch and Bluff will join Tasman Rugby League’s seven local clubs for some fast-paced action this Saturday. The winner of the competition will need a strong squad as all the action will be packed between 10am and 5pm leaving little time to nurse the bumps and bruises. A round-robin competition will be followed by the finals and a result is guar-anteed on the day.

The Nines game gives a hint of what’s involved in the title, with nine players per team playing nine minute halves. “It’s very, very fast but you still get the same big hits and skill level as the thirteen man game,” says Paul Lafotanoa, chair-man of Tasman Rugby League.Paul says the Nines Tournament is going to be an annual event and he’s keen to experience a car-nival style atmosphere where people get dressed up. There will be bouncy castles, rock-climbing and go karts to entertain the kids, while the big kids can seek refreshment at the Sprig & Fern beer tent. Under-fives get in free and children 6-16 are just $5 and adults $7 with a family ticket only $25 for two adults and up to three children.

League prepares for nines tournamentJames Peters, Lewis Miccio and Sam Wilson the three Nelson players in-volved in the Kaizen Academy team that played in Australia last week.

The fifth annual Tussock Spirit of the Moutere is being held this Sun-day and if you’re not already regis-tered to be on the startline alongside around 100 other riders, then the organisers say “it’s not too late”.The race has two lengths, the 60km or 29km options. At the same time you’ll be “spinning your wheels” supporting the fund-raising for St John’s new event am-bulance. Entry on the day is available but it makes it much easier for planning

and organising if you go online to www.nelsonevents.co.nz and get your name on the start list by Thurs-day.Make a family day of it – bring a picnic and enjoy the relaxing sur-rounds. Your bottle of Tussock is in the chill-er at Woollaston Estates awaiting your finish.Registration is at the Moutere Hills Community Centre from 8.30am until 9.00am leading up to a 9.30am start

Hundred-plus riders expected for Moutere cycle race

Three of Nelson’s talented young footballers have returned home from the Trans-Tasman Challenge in Tasmania – winning five of their seven games.James Peters, Lewis Miccio and Sam Wilson were the only three South Island players in the Wellington-

based Kaizen under 14 Academy team, coached by former New Zea-land Olympic coach Stu Jacobs. The Kaizen team won five games, drew one and lost the other during the tournament, earning high praise from other coaches at the tourna-ment.

Lily Hospers knows how far hard work, dedi-cation and one hour of shooting practice every single day can get you. But the New Zealand Un-der-18 basketball player now needs help finding $4000 to make her dream of representing her adopted country a reality. The Nelson College for Girls small forward, who moved to Nelson from the Netherlands with her family when she was just five years old, was se-lected in the New Zealand Under-18 squad fol-lowing a spell with the Koru side in the New Year. But with only two months between being selected and playing against Australia’s best state sides, Lily is hoping to raise some money to get her there.Lily will travel to Perth on April 11, before the Australian Under-18 Championship begins on the 14th. She says it was a “surprise” to make the squad, but had been aiming for it. “I worked quite hard to get it. I realized I was getting closer to making the squad, so I have morn-ing trainings most mornings and even if I don’t have training [later in the day] I come down to the school gym for an hour each night and do shooting training,” Lily says. The Australian States are likely to pose a big threat to the New Zea-land side, she says. The majority of the players that are involved in the Australian setup live together at the Australian In-stitute of Sport. “The New Zealand teams usually win only a few games over there just because the Australian stand-ard of basketball is a lot higher.

They’re definitely better players so it’s going to be a great challenge.”Lily has her eye on a US college scholarship for next year; however Europe and Australia remain further options for the Atawhai resident. “Col-lege starts in September so hopefully I can get some good footage when I’m over in Perth and start trying to get a scholarship.”To help sponsor Lily, you can email [email protected].

The word must have got out last weekend that the snapper are still off Rabbit Island. When we arrived there were 3 boats fishing in about 20 feet of water at the eastern end of the island and when we left there were 18 boats fishing inside a square kilometre radius. We were fortunate enough to catch 10 fish around the 30cm mark over a period of a few hours. The kayak-ing fraternity who have been out sev-eral times this past week have also had no trouble catching these fish.A tip for catching these smaller fish is to make sure that you use flasher rigs with recurved hooks about 3/0 in size and use either small cubed pilchards or squid as bait. By us-ing the recurved hooks the fish will generally hook themselves, leaving the easy job of winding them to the surface.Kenepuru has not fished as well this season but from now on should start to get better. The key to successful fishing in this area is patience. Early morning or evening on an incoming tide with a solid berley trail will in-crease your chances. Usually it takes about 2 hours from low tide for the current to really start to push and disperse the berley before the snap-per will come on the bite. Straylin-ing is the best way with at least one rod cast far back into the berley trail for that big shy snapper.

The spat farms and boulder bank are still producing excellent king-fish. A point that we would like to touch on, is that there are now more free divers in both of these areas. Most of these divers are very re-sponsible and have the appropriate safety measures in place, the most important being a brightly coloured

orange buoy with a dive flag attached to themselves and a diving buddy on the surface. These sim-ple measures ensure that boaties especial-ly can see that there is a diver in the wa-ter and also should a diver experience difficulties his buddy can offer assistance.Unfortunately not all divers are taking these precautions so boaties in these ar-eas should remain vigilant at all times. Some things to look-out for are a buoy

with diving flag attached, snorkel above the water, flippers kicking on the surface and any splashing of water. Also don’t necessarily assume that two buoys on the surface are that of a set net or setline and drive through them. Give them a wide berth or approach them slowly and cautiously, because if there are di-vers surfacing they won’t necessarily appear where the floats are.The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has experienced free divers in its ranks and would more than welcome any new members to benefit from their experience and knowledge.

It was no surprise to see Maungatapu come out on top at the Nel-son College for Girls athletics day, after all, they have done so for the past five years. The Nelson College for Girls athletics day was held at Saxton Oval on Wednesday with many records falling on the Mondo track. The day combines festive fun, colour and championship races all in the same event. Participation is huge with most of the girls com-peting in a string of events. While there is plenty of laughter and joy for some, once the heats are over it becomes business time for the top athletes at the school and all of the top performers were given the chance to represent their school at the Tasman Secondary School Championship this Saturday from 10am. It will be the first time the inter-school championship is held on a weekend.

The Nelson Veterans Tournament took place over the weekend at the Hope Tennis Club with 110 entries, an increase on entries over the past few years. A social grade was introduced which proved very popular with many players entering their first Veterans Tournament. There were nine husband and wife combinations compet-ing over the weekend and players came from West Coast, Marlborough and Canterbury to take part in the 44th Annual Tournament. The youngest player was Julian Main of Canterbury, the minimum age required being 35 years and the oldest competitor was Nelson’s 85 year-old Joyce Jones competing in the social doubles. The standard of tennis was outstanding with some tough experienced competitors.

Still Nelson’s Best EntertainmentSTOCK SHOCK

Karen Carey This weekend the Nelson Speedway Association will once again be hosting the Brian Stanaway Roading Stock Shock. For the last few years the Stock Shock has been one of the “must attend” meetings, not just on the Nelson calendar but also on the calendar of many of the country’s top stockcar drivers. Last year a late clash of dates meant that the number of drivers attend-ing was down on past seasons but that in no way impacted on the quality of racing. This year the entry list is sitting at around 30, ensuring some close action packed racing over the two days. The Stock Shock has a reputation for producing some of the hardest and most competitive racing in this class outside of a teams event and already the excitement is building within the Nelson Stockcar class. With a posse of 7 visitors coming from Blen-

heim, one can only assume that this will be the meeting where a few scores will be settled and a few early season paybacks meted out. Add to the entry list the return of ex superstock driver, Invercargill based Campbell McManaway, Stock Shock regular Tony Stanton from Greymouth and 3 Christchurch drivers Daniel McNally, Matt Cockburn, and Paul Anderson making their Stock Shock debut and the potential for a week-end of mayhem increases. The sole North Island representative is Kyle Heibner from Whanganui. Kyle has raced here before in his Youth Minis-tock and has been impressive since moving up to Stockcars. Last year’s winner, Tim Alexan-der is not racing this season so we are definitely looking for a new Stock Shock champion. Ralph Gillespie, a past top 3 place getter, will be a fa-vourite to move further up the podium and take out the number one spot.

On Friday night in addition to the qualifying for the Stock Shock itself the meeting also features the 2 day Minis-tock Mania championship for Youth Ministocks. This is a highly contested event for the youth drivers and one that is run over a qualifying and finals points system. While the class is es-sentially designed as a training class rather than a competitive class this format teaches them the importance of finishing races, gaining places,

keeping track of points etc, a skill they will need when they move on to other classes. The support classes on Friday night include Midgets, Streetstocks, Production Saloons and Sidecars. On Saturday night both the Brian Stanaway Roading Stock Shock, and the Ministock Mania will be decided as well as the Midget Club Champi-onships which run the final of their 3 round event. The current points leader is Nick Marquet. The final pro-

motion of the weekend is the Brett Lusty Memo-rial for sidecars and with the top pairings straight back from contesting the New Zealand Champi-onships at Rosebank Domain in Auckland expect the pace to be just that little bit hotter than usual. The Three Quarter Midgets round out Saturday’s programme.Racing both nights starts at 7pm with gates open-ing at 6pm. However, for those wanting a close up look at the cars, the opportunity to meet some of your favourite drivers and a chance to experi-ence what goes on behind the scenes prior to rac-ing, the public gate at the pit entry is open from 3pm. Entry both nights remains at $15 per adult, $7 members, pensioners and children 5-15 years. Children under 5 are free and a family pass for 2 adults and up to 3 children is only $30.
