She is pretty to

But why the strange name?

The name Passiflora incarnata
refers to the passion of christ.
In former times, the flowers´ features
were interpreted religiously.

People saw crown of thorns,
stigmata, cross nails and flagella.
The additional name “incarnata”
means incarnated.

North American natives used
Passiflora incarnata as food.
The natives called them
“maracock" (passion fruit?).
