the Heart of Sarasota”
A Publication Of Concordia Lutheran Church
† Jesus’ Harmony For the Heart of Sarasota † July/August 2016
July (Only) Worship Blended On July 3, with our Independence Day
worship celebration, we begin our July (Only) Sunday service schedule:
9 a.m. Bible study – Friendship, cool drinks, coffee, pastries. Here’s an extra moment to digest Jesus’ good Word and His wonders in our lives today.
10:15 a.m. Worship – Worship begins with praise band songs and prayer projected on the screen (like other month’s 9 a.m. worship). After we take to heart God’s Word in the sermon, the hymnal and organ (like other month’s 10:45 a.m. worship) will lead us to the Lord’s Supper. We’ll commune with Christ and with His people, including friends from “the other service”!
Our Saturday 5:30 p.m. worship continues “as is” year round.
As in previous years we’ll blend only July’s worship. This sunny month, a cool summer treat!
Concordia’s Cooking We want your favorite recipes for our 2016
Concordia Cuisine Cookbook. We hope to compile this cookbook along with the history of our Concordia and other fun items before the holidays. Then you can purchase copies for Christmas gift giving! Every effort will be made to keep costs low so that you can share the love with friends and family. Please submit your recipes to Arlene Kalotek (735-0636) and Ruth Bogenberger. (847-778-2677). Recipes will be accepted until July 1. If you know of anyone who could lend us a book binding machine, please let Arlene or Ruth know.
Nita Ball Scholarship Fund Concordia’s “Nita Ball Scholarship Fund” is
accepting college students’ applications now until July 4 (deadline). Call Parish Secretary Lei Ann (365-0844) to have the application mailed to you. Address questions to Bob Ball (941-462-1388).
Work Morn Concordia’s volunteers have set aside every
month’s third Saturday for a property work morn. We need new helpers, too! Please join us Saturdays, July 16 and August 20, 9 a.m. to noon. Look forward to pastries and coffee to get the morning started. Come any time. Can we add you to our volunteer email list? Phone Charlie Scott at 925-7808. Or drop an email to at [email protected]. Have fun, feel good, and see the church shine.
“Lord, let our neighbors see Your beauty!”
Vacation Bible School Bible stories and Jesus’ Good News, arts
and crafts, music and song, and dinner together too! July 25-29, 5:30-7 p.m., VBS will welcome all children ages 1 through 8 and their parents! Volunteers encouraged. Parents, please pick up a registration form at church. Or phone the church office or our leader Vickie Schaefer (445-4836). Help us prepare well. Share our invitation with parents of children we can bless. And pray!
“Jesus, richly bless us and all Your children!”

Two Days: Free Bread Breads, muffins, pastries, bagels, day-old...
yours free! Concordia, with Panera’s “Dough-nations,” gives away bread every Tuesday and Saturday, 9 to 10 a.m. Volunteers serve our neighbors, and your friends. Give this a try? Panera tallies every loaf, scone, and cookie. The retail value of 2015’s handouts totaled $58,035.47.
“Bread of life, give your life-giving love!”
“Jesus Salts Life” Task Force Concordia’s outreach group meets
Wednesday July 13, 6 p.m., in the choir room. You’re invited to come help us plan new events. How next will we reach out to our neighbors?
“Jesus, would You make a new friend for Yourself even through us?!”
For What Do You Pray? THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and glory forever and ever. Amen.
The Fifth Petition And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us. What does this mean? We pray in this
petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment. So we too will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.
The Sixth Petition And lead us not into temptation What does this mean? God tempts no one.
We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.
The Seventh Petition But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this
petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven.
The Conclusion For Thine is the kingdom and the power and
the glory forever and ever.* Amen. What does this mean? This means that I
should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has promised to hear us. Amen, amen means “yes, yes, it shall be so.”
*These concluding words were not in Luther’s Small Catechism. Reflecting 2 Timothy 4:18 and Revelation 4:11, early Christians added these closing praises to Jesus’ prayer. Find Jesus’ teaching about prayer at Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11.
From the “Small Catechism.” Written by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther in 1529, the little book is
treasured still by the world’s 74 million Lutherans for clearly opening the Bible’s truth and celebrating the heart of the Christian faith. Translation by Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis ©1992.
Concordia’s Future Concordia’s Future Task Force next meets
Tuesday, July 19, 6 p.m., in the choir room. We’ll discuss Concordia’s S.W.O.T. …internal strengths and weaknesses, external opportunities and threats. How can we help more people meet Jesus in worship with us, served by His forgiving Word and strengthening Sacrament? What tasks need to begin and be done better to help us welcome our neighbors?
Like all our groups this Concordia Future Task Force is open to all interested. Come! Who else would you like to recruit to serve with the nine who’ve begun? Please contact chair Rod DiGruttolo at [email protected], or 323-8266. How can we join Jesus sharing His harmony (good concord!) even deeper into the heart of our Sarasota? That’s His heart’s desire!
“Living God, the future rests in Your nail-pierced hand. Let us grasp Your every blessing!”
Summer Office Hours The church office will be closed on summer
Mondays through August 22. Parish Secretary Lei Ann takes these Mondays as vacation days to enjoy some family time. Mondays are Pastor Stephen’s year-round day off.
The Courier - July/August 2016
Youth Group! We will gather again when school starts in August. Enjoy your summer!
Concordia's Pretzels Thanks Our teens thank the 52 Concordia homes who contributed towards our trip to the National LCMS Youth Gathering in New Orleans July 15-21. Who won the drawing for the teen-served New Orleans style dinner? The Hildebrands! Please keep praying for our journey, our growing in Jesus’ faith and love!
Friend our Concordia Pretzels Facebook page for info about our t.b.a. coming events!
Don’t miss any summer surprises!
As Jesus’ Pretzels, we’re twisted and salty, sin twisted (and forgiven!) and salted saints.
We bring Jesus’ flavor and crunch to His world!

Faith Confirmed Micah Basinger At Sunday’s worship May 29,
confirmands Micah Basinger, Rachel Gaulke, Ethan Schaefer, Jonathan Sisk, and Andrew Whitlow thanked Christ for the gifts He had given them in their Baptism. And they pledged themselves to lifelong growth in His Word and holy Communion.
Each of these five teens wrote a public testimony of personal faith. The words from one we’ll print each month in this Courier newsletter. Pray for their growing faith. As we hear their joy in their Savior, we too can thank Jesus for what He had done for each of us!
Micah William Basinger was baptized into Jesus’ family July 28, 2002 at our Concordia by then pastor Rev. Edward J. DeWitt, godparents Jeremy and Katie Marx (mom’s sister and her husband). He's the big brother to Luke and Eli, the three sons of Chris and Christie Basinger. He’s beginning eighth grade at State College of Florida’s Collegiate School, Bradenton, FL. Micah had been a student Concordia’s Lutheran School (now closed) when his mom taught there. His confirmation verse is Acts 16:31, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
Micah’s Faith Statement When I was little and my mom or Mrs. Downing, my first and second grade teacher, told me Bible
stories, one of my favorites was the story of Noah. In Noah’s day, the people on earth were sinful and evil, and only Noah and his family were righteous. God called Noah and his family to build an ark to survive the flood that He would send to destroy the earth. The flood waters came, and only Noah’s family survived. Then, the waters receded and the grasses regrew. God placed the rainbow in the sky with the promise to never flood the world again. He had also promised to send a Savior who would soon come.
Now that I have taken Confirmation class, I can enjoy Noah’s Bible story in a different way. I can relate it to my baptism. Because I was baptized as a baby I do not remember the day, but my parents told me about it. When I was baptized, God’s Word together with the water brought the Holy Spirit to me to make me part of the family of Christ. Just as He saved Noah and his family, God washes me clean through my baptism and He’ll always fight for me and protect me. My favorite Bible verse is Exodus 14:14, “The Lord
will fight for you, and you only need to be still.” I really like this verse because not only does it remind me that God is always on my side, but He tells me to be calm during dark, sad times.
Finally, as I come closer to my Confirmation day, I look forward to having the connection between Jesus and me when I have my first communion. When Pastor says the words of institution, hands me the body and the blood, and looks me in the eye, I will have my baptism, my favorite Bible verse, confirmation, first communion, all together in a very physical sense. That will make it very real to me.
If one day God calls on me to show my faith to the world in a similar fashion to Noah, I hope I will follow His instructions with the confidence of Noah.

We Remember Carl Carleton (Carl) Kenneth
Rush was born November 20, 1924 in Carson City, Michigan to Ora and Clara (Sackett) Rush. The youngest, his three siblings Walter, Lucile, and Donald died before him.
Carl received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan State
University, After graduating, he worked a short time in Maracaibo, Venezuela for Standard Oil. He returned to the States a licensed Professional Engineer. He and Dorothy (Dottie) DeMeritt were married on December 28, 1947 in Morenci, Michigan at the Methodist Church. They moved to Midland, Michigan where he worked as an engineer for the City of Midland. After four years he became City Manager of Vassar, Michigan. There Carl and Dottie and their children lived for two years before moving to Romulus, Michigan. Carl became owner and General Manager of E & B Manufacturing Co. After 30 years of running a successful business, the company was sold to Bissell, Inc. and Carl retired. He and Dottie moved to a Belleville, Michigan condo. In 1999 they moved to Englewood, Florida, serving as church leaders.
Carl was always active in the community. An active member of the Lion’s Club in Wyandotte, Michigan for 50 years, he held several offices including President. He served on the Michigan Governor’s Commission on Higher Education and his local Board of Education. The Governor appointed him to the Board of Regents of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. He was a delegate to the historic Republican national convention of 1972 when Richard Nixon was re-nominated for President.
Carl and Dottie loved to travel. They traveled to every continent except Australia and Antarctica, visiting over 65 countries, including Russia, China, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and United Arab Emirates.
Carl had a very strong religious faith having been raised as a Congregationalist. After marriage, he became a Methodist, and then a Lutheran after moving to Florida. He held a variety of positions in his various churches, including chairman of the building committee for a new church. Newly moved to Sarasota, the Rush’s found their new church home with us at Concordia. Pastor Stephen conducted his memorial on May 29.
Carl will be remembered as a patient, kind, helpful, and thoughtful person. He was always a real gentleman in every sense of the word. He was a very witty person who especially loved puns. He lived long and he lived well. He is survived by his wife, Dottie, three children Douglas (Guni), Vicki (Mark) Hopper, and Philip and eight grandchildren (Brian, Christopher, Erin, Tom, Mark, Ellie, Nikolas and Jeff).
You may contribute in Carl’s memory to any Lion’s Club or our Concordia.
Nan Ryan on June 5 received new birth in baptism (photo). Concordia welcomes Nan into Jesus’ family!
We Remember Myron Myron Howard Smith, 85, of Sarasota, Fl,
beloved husband of Marya Elizabeth (Daniels) Smith for almost 64 years went home to his Savior on May 25 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Born in Middletown, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Gustav and Wanda (Marks) Smith. Myron married Marya on May 31, 1952, in Middletown, and graduated Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1952. The graduate was recruited by General Electric Corporation There he worked until retirement in 1994, his most notable promotion to Manager-General and Tax Accounting in Schenectady, New York.
Myron enjoyed serving with Marya in a number of church-based ministries: Lutheran Woman’s Missionary League, Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schenectady, Clown and Puppet Gospel ministry, The Orphan Grain Train, and substitute organist. Myron enjoyed traveling with Marya for missions and for pleasure. Our elder Chuck Resh, visiting them, recently found Myron playing the piano as he and Marya led songs and hymns at the Heron Club Prestancia in Sarasota.
Along with his wife, Myron is survived by sons Mark, David and Robert, daughters Lynn and Nancy, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter Lauren. His June 4 funeral was conducted by Faith Lutheran Church in Middletown, Connecticut. Marya, now living with her Sarasota family, continues in our homebound care.

Prayer and Healing Healing is part of the journey for all
Christians. Wednesday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m., you and your friends are invited to Concordia’s special Service of Prayer and Healing. Together we turn to Jesus. We will hear God’s Word. Individuals will have an opportunity to receive personal prayer and, if desired, with anointing oil. Read James 1:13-16.
Raising the Roof Green Roofing & Waterproofing Technologies
of Nokomis has nearly completed re-roofing Concordia’s ailing roofs. They began April 26 at a cost of $104,400. (Less than the $165,000 we first faced!) The sanctuary roofs, concrete canopy roofs, Willer Fellowship Hall roofs, and storage shed roofs will be removed. The new Durolast roof includes a 20-year materials and labor warranty.
Concordia unanimously approved the project at September 19-20’s Congregational Meeting (55 members attended). We also agreed to repair our Family Promise House (former parsonage) and some other shingle roofs. Those bids are still being “nailed down.” And we agreed to complete the renovation of our 1976 organ with the replacement of 36 pipes. The 8’ principal painted zinc flake pipes #1-24 cost $9,824, to be installed in July.
As of May 31 we had raised $60,974 towards the “Roof Plus Fund.” Our Concordia Foundation has resolved to give matching funds to double the first $50,000 donated by Concordia’s people. Our Concordia Foundation also decided to loan the congregation any funds still needed (saving the church interest costs). Your special contributions (“over and above” your regular tithes and offerings) help tremendously!
“Jesus, You shelter us in life’s every season. Help us care for Your Concordia people and property. Let us rejoice in Your gathering us together under Concordia’s roof, singing Your praise, as You so generously serve us!”
Concordia Cruise 2017 “Concordia sets sail again!” says “Captain”
Dave Battles. February 11-16 we’ve booked 5 nights on the “Brilliance” gliding to Key West and Cozumel! Interested? Please speak to Dave. (Leave a message at 941-927-0053 with your name and phone number, please.) Singles welcome too… we’re finding friends to split a cabin.
Dave has placed detailed brochures in the church entryway. Each ticket will include a $100 gift towards Concordia’s Roof Fund. Already 32 of us have signed on to sail. The $100 deposit is due when you book. Please write “Cruise Deposit: Roof Fund” on your envelope or check. The Battles are contributing all his commission.
Portals of Prayer “Portals of Prayer,” our daily devotional
booklets for July through September, are now available on the literature tables beside the entrance doors. Spend this moment with the living Lord each day, growing in gratitude that He spent His life for you!
Pocket size, or large print? Either way, keep your “Portals” handy at your bedside or kitchen table. Wake up with Jesus, and feed on His Word! Would you like the church office to mail you your copy? Ask, and you shall receive (365-0844).
Thrivent Choice® Donors - Thanks! Thrivent Choice is the member-advised
charitable grant program from Thrivent Financial. Eligible benefit members are designated Choice Dollars® that they can direct, thereby recommending charitable grant funding among thousands of enrolled churches and nonprofit organizations. From 2010 to 2014, 26 Thrivent donors directed $16,304 to Concordia’s Building Fund and another $6,206 to our special Properties Fund. In 2015 Concordia received $2,316. We have received about the same so far in 2016, funds that can help our Roof Fund or special Properties Fund. Your church family thanks God for your generosity!
Nationwide in 2015 313,700 Thrivent members distributed more than $54.2 million in Choice Dollars. If you are eligible to participate in Choice Dollars, or are uncertain about your eligibility, visit Thrivent.com/thriventchoice. Or contact our Sarasota Thrivent Financial consultant Jerry Reimer at 941-756-1344. Most Thrivent members are eligible also for $250 “Caring in Communities” grants. Ask Ellen Gaulke (400-6463). She’s helped many of us access these funds to bless Concordia’s “good neighbor” projects.
