This workshop will provide participants with an overview of contemporary understandings of Substance Abuse and the most common Mental Health conditions. We will then review a handful of the key concepts that will drive our work with persons with co-occurring conditions for probably the next decade. When consumers present these days with both substance use issues and mental health concerns, it is the norm, not the exception. Regardless of our professional or helping role, we have evolved some universal understandings that are already evident in some best practice applications. Some case examples, a brief video and group discussion will help accomplish the learning goals.

B. Hunger Busters: Sue Segelman, Nutrition Outreach Project, YWCA of Rochester & Monroe

County. In this session, participants will learn the basics of the Food Stamp Program, other federal nutrition programs such as WIC, & local innovative projects that help reduce hunger.

1:15pm - 2:45pm Workshop Descriptions Session II

A. Working with Transgender Youth and Homeless Issues: Erik Libey, AIDS Rochester Transgender youth face many challenges that often lead to their being disproportionately represented in the at-risk and homeless youth population. Working with youth of transgender experience in any setting can present unique challenges. This, however, can be extremely true in programs working with street and homeless youth where services are very often gender-specific in nature. This workshop will provide a general overview of the life experience of transgender youth, identify some of the pressing issues that put them at risk, and give providers some specific areas in which to build capacities around working with this under-served population.

information on the cause and prevention of foodborne diseases in soup kitchens, shelters, home day cares and food pantries.
