The Violence Against Women Act or 'VAWA' provides legal protections for

immigrant victims of domestic violence. You can file an immigrant visa

petition without the knowledge or help of your abuser. This is called a

self-petition. If approved, you will be granted deferred action status and

allowed to work in the United States. You can also apply for a green card.
