Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according

to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my

beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father

and Christ Jesus our Lord (2 Tim 1:1-2).

But I trust in the Lord Jesus to

send Timothy to you shortly, that I

also may be encouraged when I

know your state. For I have no

one like-minded, who will

sincerely care for your state. For

all seek their own, not the things

which are of Christ Jesus. But you

know his proven character, that as

a son with his father he served

with me in the gospel (Philippians

2:19-22).

First Century Faith: Faithful sayings

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I

am chief” (1 Timothy 1:15)

This is a true saying, “If a man desire the office of a bishop,

he desireth a good work” (1 Tim 3:1)

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. “For

therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we

trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men,

specially of those that believe” (1 Tim 4:9,10)

This is a faithful saying: for if we died with him, we shall also

live with him. If we endure, we shall also reign with him. If we

deny him, he also will deny us. If we are faithless, he remains

faithful; he cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:11–13).

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but

according to his mercy he saved us …” This is a faithful

saying (Titus 3:5-8)

Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness,

faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out

of a pure heart.(2 Timothy 2:22)

And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be

gentle to all, able to teach, patient in humility correcting

those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will

grant them repentance, so that they may know the

truth. (2 Timothy 2:24-25) I am ready...

Trouble ahead for all believers

But know this, that in the last days

perilous times will come: For men will

be lovers of themselves, lovers of

money, boasters, proud, blasphemers,

disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control,

brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty,

lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a

form of godliness but denying its power. And from such

people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into

households and make captives of gullible women loaded

down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning

and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.(2

Timothy 3:1–7)

Now as Jannes and

Jambres resisted

Moses, so do these

also resist the truth:

men of corrupt

minds, disapproved

concerning the faith;

but they will

progress no further,

for their folly will be

manifest to all, as

theirs also was.(2

Timothy 3:8–9)

But you have carefully

followed my doctrine,

manner of life, purpose, faith,

longsuffering, love,

perseverance, persecutions,

afflictions, which happened to

me at Antioch, at Iconium, at

Lystra — what persecutions I

endured. And out of them all

the Lord delivered me. Yes,

and all who desire to live

godly in Christ Jesus will

suffer persecution.

which is in Christ Jesus.(2

For the time will come when they will not endure

sound doctrine, but according to their own desires,

because they have itching ears, they will heap up

for themselves teachers; and they will turn their

ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to

fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure

afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your

ministry… (2 Timothy 4:3–5)

Be diligent to come to me quickly; for

Demas has forsaken me, having

loved this present world … Only Luke

is with me. Get Mark and bring him

with you, for he is useful to me for

ministry … Bring the cloak that I left

with Carpus at Troas when you come

— and the books, especially the

parchments … At my first defence no

one stood with me, but all forsook

me. May it not be charged against

them. But the Lord stood with me and

strengthened me, so that the

message might be preached fully

through me, and that all the

Gentiles might hear …

mouth of the lion. And the Lord will

deliver me from every evil work and

Erastus stayed in Corinth, but

Trophimus I have left in Miletus sick.

be with your spirit. Grace be with
