Thecircus calls it mineral-rich, organic fertilizer, which is superior to others because it has notbeen treated with chemicals.

Circus o f f i c i a l s report they were surprised atthe response, for hundreds of people showedup to fill their sacks, cans and cartons. Every-one of them, says a spokesman, is a greenthumb gardener, and it sure helps cut downon the estimated $6000 cost of disposing ofit via local scavenger services.

The green thumb folks use it for everythingfrom lawns to fruit trees, to rose bushes andgardens. They all echo the same statementmade by one woman, who said, "Everythingin my yard and garden should grow betternow."

There's an old saying, something about thatif Mohammad won't come to the mountainthen the mountain should be brought to him.In a sense it sort of explains a situation thathas developed between me and Circus Vargasover the past few years.Everytime the show appeared within a reason-able driving distance it seemed somethinghappened to prevent me from visiting them. Finally, show owner Cliff Vargas decidedthere was only one way to get me to his cir-cus and so he brought it right into my hometown (El Cerrito, Calif., Oct. 21-24). In factthe tent was just two blocks away and couldbe seen from the house. Now there was no excuse for not seeing theshow and my first visit to the lot, on open-ing day, brought some unexpected response. The front door people escorted me to thebest seat in the tent and then saw to it thatmy every wish was fulfilled.

A million nostalgic memories raced throughmy mind as I sat there waiting for thr per-formance to begin. There were thoughts ofcircus visits as a youngster, of touring on asmall show, in rain, mud and sunshine. Itwas the excitement and anticipation that on-ly a tented show can create.Suddenly I was brought back to reality asthe band played an overture and the firstannouncements were made. Then the perfor-mance got underway, and do you knowwhat? It's a good show. One that runssmoothly and quickly, is well balanced andfeatures some top-notch acts. The costumesand lighting are excellent and still they planto make improvements for next year.Show trucks are clean and neat. Practicallyevery tractor unit is new • bought this year. The paved parking lot, on which the circuswas set-up, was washed and swept each dayand the tents were washed before they wereput into the air.The weather was good, with cool evenings.Business was better than was expected withfolks coming from all over to attend theperformance. This adds up to good crowdsevery day, with two turnaways.Needless to say, I was once again bitten by

TWO PROMINENT COLLEGES in the East are preparing special circus courses and sending students toFamous Hunt in '77. To leave the show will meanflunking out and losing credits, thus Famous Huntis assured of a first class, young work force. "Naturally they'll be paid," says Marsha. The colleges?Well, I'm not permitted to name them as yet.

CIRCUS ODYSSEY, a new show formed by EDMIGLEY, in association with RALPH! MIRANDA,is set to open in San Juan. Puerto Rico, for 31/,weeks followed by two more spots. Tour begins inlate February. The WAZZANS, the GUTIS andIllusionists SCALZO & CO., are among the talentalready inked.

Gorgeous BARBARA WOODCOCK informs me hersensational son, BEN WILLIAMS, is with the BARTHOLO CIRCUS in Brazil where he is presentingthe late JOHNNY C L I N E ' s elephants, combined'with one already owned by the show. This circusbought the Cline elephants prior to Johnny'sdeath. Ben went down on a 6 week contract with a6 months option which was immediately picked up.Now, the circus wants Ben to stay on forever!

The G-M bulls, originally trained by BUCKLESWOODCOCK, and recently purchased by theFELDS, are at work on the Ringling show Thatcourt suit, instigated and then dropped by SIDKELLNER in Akron, gave ALICIA MITZLER,owner of a beauty salon who was involved, somuch publicity, business at her salon has tripled!Speaking of publicity, CIRCUS WORLD has turnedto "tours" and promotional tie-ins to hype at-tendance during the slack months. The idea hasbeen so successful it will be retained.

The cradle team of DONNA WILSON and BILLBANNISTER are set for Xmas dates, same forMOFFAT, some for Hubler ALPHONSOMAGANA and LU ANN JACOBS visited the Ringling show in Washington, DC enroute to Sarasota....JOHNNY HERRIOTT has been signed with the RedUnit as performance director • he will also be thehead horse trainer.

TV REVIEW: The GREAT HOUDINIS, recentlyaired on ABC was a disappointment to magicians. While the performances were excellent, most ofthe film was taken up by the mother-son relation-

ship (marvelously played by RUTH GORDON) andHoudini's psychopathological "war" with Spiritual-ism. Very little of Houdini's "tricks" were exposed• which is probably just as well!

JUGGLING THINGS: Whirlwind manipulator LOT-TIE BRUNN has closed her season with GATTI-CHARLES, but returns in 1977 Brother FRAN-CIS was forced to leave the Americana in PuertoRico to have a hip operation in Paris. The opera-tion went well, but Francis will be idle for sixmonths MICHAEL CHERRICK is featured withthe SID & MARTY KROFT show in Atlanta. He'sset for an indefinite run.

A promoter for ROYAL HANNEFORD absoundedwith $500 and then checked into a sanitarium - Iwouldn't touch the rest of that sentence with a 30ft quarter pole! Informed sources tell me theFELDS have NO plans to put out a tenter in '77.The reason being given is their knowledge ofbuildings does not extend to tents. Well, SarasotaAND both units are filled to overflowing with cur-rent and "ex" Ringling men who do! Very pos-sibly, the Felds could change their minds before'77 is "all out and all over!"

GOOD READING: "CHARLIE GALLAGHER, MYLOVE", a Signet paperback by English Screenwri-ter MAX CATTO. First recommended by authorDARRYL PONICSAN, who told me the book hadbeen purchased by actor JAMES CAAN for aneventual film. It's the saga of an Italian Circusstranded in the West in 1868. The book is diffi-cult to find. Look for it in the "Western Section"of major book stores.

HARRY T. HUNT is touring a series of shoppingcenters starting in January. He just played theSouth Haven Mall in New Jersey. On the programwere: PETER LUVAS' Globe of Death. ARTUROTROSTL, high wire/motorcycle, and Illusionist

' SWANSON. Harry says Famous Hunt is set to goi out despite the fact it has been in quarters less, than a month, thanks largely to the efforts of; BOB OWENS and ARTHUR BROWN.

Midget Clown JUNE DEWSBURY willhave her day in court with the IRS and says shewill let me know the outcome immediately!Good luck, June!

See you down the road, luvs.

Kans. DateThreatening skies hovered over the Carson &Barnes Circus at Marysville (Kans.) on Oct. 4where the show was on a hard to f ind lot.Because of prior rains the area was reallymuddy and many trucks were pulled ontothe lot. Most of the trucks were parked onthe street, as much as two blocks away.

Hie show used four seat wagons at this dateand drew small crowds. They were using theold 1974 big top because of the weatherand possible bad winds.

The air was cool and mud was very much inevidence at Clay Center (Kans.) where theshow played on Oct. 7th. However, facflitieswere better here. The circus carries

The circus carries one of the biggest menag-eries on the road today, with some 34 ele-phants, two zebras, llamas, and a variety ofcaged and penned animals. This writer enjoyedvisiting with Gladys Black, Jim Crawford,Shorty Shearer and others on the show.

76-77 ,by BILLY BARTON

THE BICENTENNIAL YEAR has been a Bicentennial Bust While some tent circuses made money, orat least broke even, other shows experienced finan-cial turmoil. The saturation of Bicentennial Salutes,in which local sponsors ware already deeply involvedmade 1976 a difficult year to get through. Add tothis the erratic economy and the unsettled Presi-dential situation

The Spring, always a good time for tent shows, held up fairly wall; but the summer season wii •roller coaster, certainly hurt by the increasing popu-larity of Theme Parks, which had the greatestgrosses in the history of American AmusementParks. Early fall saw the tenters heading to thebarn rapidly. The Great American closed Oct. 11.with Sells & Gray and Huxit Bros., following doseon its heels.

Some daimed the early dosings ware due to theNovember elections, but that seems utertty a justi-fication. The answar is, 1976 has simply bean avary bad circus year.

Circuses depending solely on phone promotionsfound the going rough. Such promotions will con-tinue to be active, but there are now only so manymoney-making promos left, and none are as profit-able. "Unlimited Calling" has been stopped in manyareas, with calls now costing 7 to 9 cents each. Ex-penses are overriding profits. On top of increasedpromotional costs b the "heat", which is gettinghotter A promoter finds himself running the risk ofarrest or being shut down. The heat in Canada, for example, is volcanic and a lot of that is beingfart in this country. Sponsors are making largerdemands and often promoters go into the hole.

The following is a thumbnail report on a cross-sec-tion of American tent shows, based on a 1976pulse-beat which, in turn, gives a basic idea of whatcan be expected from these shows next season.

In September, Charles Germaine launched the newPage-Cavanaugh Circus. It's promotional activity hasbeen brisk. Newport News (Va) was especially good. The circus has a run of 14 days or so on theWest Coast and two dates in the east in December, all in buildings. The plan is to play a lengthyroute in '77, in buildings and under canvas. It wasGermaine, it must be remembered, who pioneeredthe successful Miller-Johnson operation that wassold to Clifford E. Vargas.

It is a bit early to predict the future of the Paae-Cavanaugh Circus. Past track records do not naces-sarily underwrite future achievements. Germaine, however, is a first dass promoter, so look for aninitial run of about 12 to 14 weeks starting, undercanvas, about June.

April heralds the return of veteran showman RudyJacob! with an under canvas tour of Rudy Bros.Circus. Except for a brief run in Jury Jacobi shelvedthe circus in favor of a Bugs Bunny promotion.family tickets are the keys to this format TommyBendy heads the Rudy Bros, promotions and heknows what he is doing. Jacobi plans a run of 25weeks. Look for a 120 round top with two 40 ft;middles and a season running about 17 weeks asRudy Jacobi attempts to reestablish his previousroute and make a strong come-back.

Fifteen weeks of tent promotions are reportedly be-ing geared by a group of promotional mastermindslong associated with a prominent indoor circus. This project is linked together by a long chain of"ifs"; and "if" the whole thing jetts, the predictionn for a successful undertaking, but far short ef a16 week tour. Such an inniujuril tour is a bit opti-mistic with so many other shows using the sameapproach.

Believe it or not, a list compiled recently showed •65 circuses playing the U.S. and Canada. Someplayed only a single week, or dates of two weeks, while others ran six to eight weeks or less. Thisfigure induded all shows - indoors and out. tents, two rodeos and two variety/circus type chows. (Ac-tually, a very small percentage opened and folded).Inasmuch as 65 circuses were in evidence in 1976it is safe to predict at least SO will appear in 1977.

Ivan Henry launched his Henry Bros. Circus in '71on the back-end of Capell Bros. Carnival, then hewant into a park at Phoenix. He is now lookingfor a tent, so the prediction is that Henry Bros, ugoing to tour as a separata entity from Capell Bros, but with that show's backing.

The manager of a small tent circus on the road in'76 is rumored to be planning a show of his own;was, in fact, reported to be interested in LewisBros. Circus equipment. That rumor, very strong

two months back has now dissipated, so it ispossible the idea was abandoned or that terms forthe Lewis Bros. Circus were not agreeable.

Beatty Cole has been a major rumor topic all sea-son, competing with RBBB's possible tent unit forthe "Big News" of the year. It's fairly well knownthat Beatty Cole did not have a good season andreports have been strong that the show would nottour in '77 and that it quite possibly would besold.

These rumors gained further strength when otherrumors developed that King Bros, would be enlarg-ed (110 round top with 3-40 ft. middles) and thata cat act was to be added to their program. It hasbeen said that both King and Sells & Gray havesupported the mother show for many years. Ifsuch is the case then economics would seem to in-dicate that the show just cannot continue. It's abeautiful show and it would be a shame not to seeit on the road. The prediction here is that the bigBeany Cole show will tour in '77, thus dispelling

The Big John Strong Circus had a spotty spring, but made its annual cross-country tour nevertheless. It did well in Ohio and exceptionally wet) in Cana-da. Overall it was probably a see-saw season, butone that was survived with grace. The prediction isthat the show will do much better in 1977.
