    FAKING IT

Sian Evans is 22. Until last year, she lived a quiet life, playing the cello and studying

music at university. Then one day, she was given a challenge. She agreed to take part

in a television programme called Faking it. She had just four weeks to learn newskills and become a nightclub DJ. At the end of her training, she had to perform and

compete against three professional DJs. She had to convince the judges that she

    wasnt a fake.

For a month, Sian stayed with a top DJ, Anne. When Sian first met her, she felt

totally out of place. She said, She is so glamorous. I was quite scared at first, but

as soon as she arrived Sian started her training. She had lessons in mixing the

music. She had voice training to make her sound right: I learnt to shout with

attitude! said Sian. To make her look right, she had new clothes, a new haircut andeven dancing lessons. It wasnt only lessons, however. She also practised. She

practised everything, but mostly the mixing. She was on the decks for at least five

    hours a day.

At the end of the month, Sian and three other professional DJs performed in front

of the judges. Their job was to pick the fake. None of them picked Sian. In fact,

they couldnt believe it when they were told. She was professional and confident due

to the dedicated practice. Immediately after the programme, she was offered a job

as a professional DJ in a top nightclub. So, perhaps its true that practice makesperfect!
