eekends are vital in the overall formation of a health science student because it is the only time

we get to take a breather from our hectic everyday schedules as physical therapy students. This is why it moved the officers of the Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students to see that so many members took time from their rest day to attend the 8th General Assembly held last October 25, 2015. Excitement filled the hall as members from the different member schools entered the venue. The officers felt the tremendous support from the representatives and the countless hours they worked to make the event possible became worth it. Knowing that they will be welcoming students and members who are as enthusiastic and as passionate as they are gave them a new sense of achievement, a new source of strength, and it definitely further ignited their passions to serve the organization.

As the hall quickly filled with members, the keynote speaker was introduced. The organization welcomed Ms. Esmerita Rotor,

a physical therapist who gave the talk about an introductory course on “Opportunities in Pediatric Physical Therapy.” The discussion gave the students new insights as she shared her experiences in the field of Pediatrics. The lecture was followed by Parallel Sessions where members moved to assigned rooms at the UP CAMP. It was truly an educational and insightful experience as students were given 3 hours of different topics about Pediatrics namely:

Physical Therapy Role

Management of CP & DS

Alternative Exercises Play Therapy

The end of the 3 hour parallel sessions marked the beginning of the socialization segment of the General Assembly where students get to mingle with their fellow members allowing them to build new bridges and

reconnect with old friends. It was the perfect way to conclude the 8th General Assembly as it further strengthened each member’s dedication to the APPTS cause.

The 8th of September is a significant day to all Physical Therapists because on this day, we celebrate the World Physical Therapy Day. It is the opportunity for physical therapists from all over the globe to raise awareness about the relevance of physical therapy as a profession and as a solution in making the lives of people better.

As an organization, the Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students joined and participated in the celebration by allowing Physical Therapy Students all over the country to create short videos giving everyone the warmest greetings this World Physical Therapy Day. It was truly a day full of wonderful moments as it gave all the members an encouraging factor. That our profession is something that contributes to

the welfare of people and this was enough to give us all a sense of purpose and that we have to succeed to give others that same sense of purpose and encouragement to continue living life at its finest.

“Physical therapists always got your back.” Acknowledging member schools that give their warmest greetings to all:

Outreach Program & Christmas Party By Elle Brion

The Biggest Smile always belongs to all the elderly people seeing they’re happy and contended.

According to Thomas S. Monson, “Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. it is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.” Last December 20, 2015, the Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students had an Outreach Program and Christmas Party for the Cerebral Palsy and Geriatric residents at the Missionaries of the Poor at San Andres Bukid in Manila. The event started out with a short briefing, a tour of the facility, opening remarks, the prayer, and then continued on with the volunteers leading the morning exercises of both the pedia and geria residents. After which, with the help of our two licensed Physical Therapists, Ma’am Rommellie M. Barredo, PTRP and Sir Julian Philip D. Lacanlale, PTRP we conducted a short talk and return demo on transfers, proper bed positioning, infection control, hygiene and general health care with the care takers, residents and their respective volunteers. This was followed by lunch time where various intermission numbers were performed by the residents as we enjoyed our meal.

Donations Sa Tulong Kabataan “Every act of kindness to others is an act of kindness to Christ.” – Smith Wigglesworth

We were also serenaded by the barangay’s carolers. After a very good and long lunch, we continued on with the interaction; the geria residents and their volunteers had story-telling and sing alongs while the pedia residents had educational play. The day ended with the giving of gifts for each resident and caretaker and handing over our collected donations to the facility. The event wouldn’t be possible without the help of the generous donations of our member schools. We would also like to thank our volunteers from Arellano University, Our Lady of Fatima University-Valenzuela, Our Lady of Fatima University-Antipolo, Our Lady of Fatima University-Quezon CIty, University of Baguio, University of Batangas, Emilio Aguinaldo College, St. Dominic College of Asia and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila who took the time and effort to bring not only smiles to the patients but also hope in their hearts.

One of the biggest occurrences in the history of the Association of the Philippines Physical Therapy Students and one of the biggest dreams of all its member schools, the Board of Directors, and most importantly, the Executive Committee of Year 2015-2016 was met on March 6 and 20, 2016 and Emilio Aguinaldo College – Manila graciously

hosted the venue. The experience was

overwhelming as we witnessed such a remarkable event. Each and every member school showcased their school spirit through their unity, cooperation, sportsmanship, and camaraderie as a team. Although the organizers may had a little bit of uncertainty at first, it became clear that the event was going to become a success due to the support they received from the member schools and from each other. The committee was excited that the APPTS gained another 2 schools who attended the event. PhysiOlympics was joined by more than 330 players (Amazing race: 60+, Volleyball: 122+, Basketball: 148+) and we’re particularly proud of the efforts to reach out to the student community in all member schools:

DRILL- PLAYERS DRILL

The Basketball and Volleyball teams split up to their designated courts and were given enough time for their players to warm up. The assigned committee hyped up the crowd and worked together with the referees. According to Mike O’halloran “Teamwork Makes The Dream Works”. All the teams of each member schools proved it right. The game began with a whistle from the referee followed by that instant action of the players. This is immediately followed by the deafening cheers of the audience in support to their schools. The team doesn’t stop with the players but it encompasses the entire court and the way a team plays as a whole determines its success. From the dribbling of the ball to the cheering of the crowd, it’s all done with teamwork. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars, but if they don’t play together, then it won’t work out for the entire group. The organizing committee felt and saw this form of passion during the games which only proves that APPTS is united in its cause.

DAY 1: BATTLE BEGINS By Marilen Cervantes

VP – Documentation/Volleyball Committee Head

Preparations are set and the countdown has reached zero. Today is the first day of the first ever intercollegiate friendly games, PhysiOlympics! Representatives of member schools arrived at the venue early looking thrilled and pumped for the activities that lie ahead. As more schools entered the Emilio Aguinaldo College gymnasium, our hosts Daniel and Micah from Arellano University began the program by welcoming the APPTS adviser, Mr. Arthur King to deliver the opening remarks. The hosts then started setting the mood by making each school cheer for their teams and the gym was filled with their battle cries. The players then entered the court with their school flags while the PhysiOlympics flag was carried by the APPTS President, Mr. Jerome de Leon. This marked the beginning of the phenomenon that is PhysiOlympics 2016!

We would also like to acknowledge the winners of the First PhysiOlympics 2016:

MEN’S BASKETBALL Champion: St. Paul University Iloilo

2nd Place: Emilio Aguinaldo College – Manila 3rd Place: Far Eastern University

4th Place: Our Lady of Fatima University – QC

MIXED VOLLEYBALL Champion: University of Perpetual Help

2nd Place: Wesleyan University – Philippines 3rd Place: St. Paul University Iloilo

4th Place: St. Dominic College of Asia

DAY 2: MATIRA MATIBAY By Marco De Jesus Basketball Committee Head The APPTS organizing team put a lot of effort into making sure that everything would go smoothly. It is true that problems were encountered but since the team was prepared, it was easily handled. This was the indication that day 1 was a success. As basketball committee head, it was nice to meet all the team captains whom I referred to as “mga kaPTans.” I asked them to pass around the APPTS flag, from one team to the next to let them feel that this was an event of unity. It made them feel that we were all aiming for the same goals and dreams of becoming great physiotherapists. Each team was excited to compete for the title of the “First PhysiOlympics Champion” and even their supporters cheered loud and proud to show their school spirit. Day 2 was the "matira matibay" and last day of the historical PT students' friendly competition and the teams that made it to the finals were EACM and SPUI. All teams were really good and we believe that both EACM and SPUI were good in team play and I was impressed with SPUI because they were "batak". They maintained a gap between their score and the other schools and the trip from Iloilo to Manila paid off as they were announced as victors. Congratulations to the first PhysiOlympics champion, to all the school that participated, and of course, to the APPTS for a successful intercollegiate friendly competition, the PhysiOlympics.

Grateful by Jerome De Leon President of the APPTS

University of Perpetual Help – DJGTMU UPH-DJGTMU became a part of APPTS since the 8th General assembly and participate the physiolympics

“I would like to express great pride and my heartfelt gratitude to the people who helped make this event a reality

To the APPTS Alumni and our Adviser for guiding us and envisioning APPTS as the organization where PT students from different schools can work together and create projects to which they can claim ownership to

To the PhysiOlympics Committee who accepted the challenge of juggling their academics with organizing this event.

To all the volunteers who spent their day managing the program, ensuring the continuous flow of the games, and handling logistics and venue.

To the schools' PT faculty whose encouragement brought out the best in their students!

And to our greatest motivation, the PT students themselves, who sacrificed their time to train and drill with their teams. Everyone who witnessed the games last Sunday will not doubt the passion seen in each of the players. The way they competed with all they had to bring pride to their schools and true enough, each team gave their schools a reason to cheer them on!

Thank you for traveling from all over the country just to join us for PhysiOlympics. Thank you for spending your time and exerting all your efforts to make this event successful! Without all of you, none of this would have been possible.

It only proves that when we fight for something we love, our limitations are stretched further as we reach our full potentials and that at the end of the day, all our hard work was worth it. Once again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you and congratulations to each team! See you on PhysiOlympics 2017!”

APPTS BOARD OF OFFICERS 2015-2016 Seven is a significant figure in our organization, for the number represents the 7 executive committee positions that will spearhead the association and lead the physical therapy student community to the right direction.

Jerome has always exhibited dedication to always do his best no matter the task is. In my working with him, I have seen him grow into a responsible person, a passionate team player, a willingly risk taker to achieve results, a person who is not afraid of change, a truly grounded person in the present but, even more importantly, he has proven that nothing is too hard to get, that the only thing standing between you and your plan is your dedication and the passion that you invest.

-Mary Margaret A. Dendiego President, Association of the Philippine Physical Therapy Students

Ms. Presto exemplifies the adequate knowledge to assist the APPTS in achieving their goals for all members of the organization. She is befitting to endorse the organization because of her diligence and hardwork. I recommend her in disseminating all information of APPTS to further increase the awareness of the organization.

-Gerard Austin L. Grande President, UST Physical Therapy Society

Elle is a natural-born leader – proving herself over the years that she can handle anything that she puts her heart to. PT students by day, ballet dancer by night, she manages to excel in both academics and her passion for dancing which shows her capacity for time management. Being the vice president of the college student council during her 2nd year in the program, they created one of the best projects and activities PLM PT students have experienced. A good student and an even better leader, she loves to serve and make everyone feel connected.

-Karen Cathleen P. Adubal President, College of the Physical Therapy Student Council

She has been my student for two semester and I found her excellent academically and possesses good leadership qualities. She is very trustworthy and finishes any work given to her on time. She is highly motivated and enthusiastic to learn new things moreover, she has an outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills. She is able to successfully complete multiple tasks with favorable results despite time constraints. She works well even under pressure.

-Maritoni M. Pablo, PTRP, MA Program head, Our Lady of Fatima University

Being with her for 4 years, I have witnessed how dedicated and hardworking she is when it comes to everything especially in academics. she makes sure everything is well-prepared, and she is a good leader. She thinks before she acts first for the opinion of everyone before deciding. I firmly believe that she would be an asset to the organization.

-Marie-joie Lissette A. Maranan President, Future Allied Medical Practitioners Society

Ms. Nicole often called ate nicki, works with finesse and she always keeps everything organized. Having her lead us in two consecutive years. She showed us exemplary performance. As I witnessed her leadership, I commend her ‘joyful’ yet ‘fierce’ attitude on it. And I know that ate nicki, have wha it takes to be a good leader.

-Jacquelyn M. Manlapaz President, Physical Therapy Students Society

Ms. Chamorro was previous member of the PTSC (SY 2014-2015) and during her term as the business manager, she displayed natural leadership, a pleasant personality and showed that she is capable of handling affairs with little or no supervision. She is well-disciplined, creative and hardworking as a student and she applies the same traits when it comes to student council projects. Ms. Chamorro has a capacity for independent work and during our term together as PTSC members, I know that I can trust her to get the job done. She is very fun to be with at both professional and social gatherings. She expresses her own opinions and also respect her colleague’s ideas.

-Louise A. Cinco President, Physical Therapy Students Council
