(1) Unit minefields are used to improve the defense of a unit by nroviding protection to a position such as a defended locality, an outpost, or a road block~ ~ aDl. JR-tn ,., :m,.,..i""'n l;l ~ §t.Rr..aa·;Q pattern and located:

(b) On the flanks of attacking units in isolated. or salient positions.

(2) The unit commander is responsible for informing higher headquarters and adjacent units at once of any unit minefields laid -because it may be necessary to restrict! mine laying in certain areas in order to:

(a) Keep clear the ground over which a friendly counter-attack is to be launched. ·

(b) Leave lanes through which our vehicles and ,per-sonnel 0a11 move.

(c) Economize on effort and material.

(1) Divisional minefields are used to improve tha def~nsive position of a larr.te unit in a general defense. They aN ir~oStallad_ :'f;o delay, break up, and canalize the enemy's attack formation and to b6ld him in areas covered by intense defensive fire, Divisional minefit1ds are laid as part of a predetermined barrie~ plan fo~~lated ~".d.is~Jed by division or hi~her headquarters, and are tied into natural .obsta~lea, Like unit minefields, divisional minefields are laid in standard patterns. Existing minefields, both friendly and enemy, may be altered to fit .the barrier plan and incorporated in it.

(1) Nuisance minefields are installed during retrograde movements vhen the sitttation requires drastic ac~ion to ~raas and,alow the enemy, These fields generally consist of unmarked. and scattered anti-tank, anti-personnel, and inprovised mines which are installs\!. along roads or avenues o'E approach to positions, in turnouta 1 l~e:~· bivouac areas or vater points, and other suitable positions, No~ll7, nuisance minefields are not covered ~ fire; their effectiveness depends On individual mine concealment and the carelessness of the c.nemy.

(2) All minefields, regardless of their type of preVious tactical employment, hecome rro.isance minefields vhen they are ab&Ddoned and le.Pt undefended. The efi'ect~veness of a minefield, like any other obstacle,, depends upon the fire of defending weapons; hence, vhel\ the defense is removed, a field has onLy nulsanoc value.

e. ~ ~: A boo~ trap, usually installed during retrograde movements, is a conCe'lled mine or ch'l.rge designed to infl .. ot casualties on and destroy the morale of enemy personnel, Its fir~ mechanism is so pl~ced that an unsuspecting ~rson c'l.uses the Chatle . to detonate by disturbing an apparently harmlesq object. 4. Authority for installing minefields and booby traps.

a. General:

(1) To prev<nt cesu~lties to our troops, all minefields, including dummy minefields and enemy minefields that have been ~ cy our troops or incorporated in our defense positions, must be ~ked in a !llanner known to all troops.

(2) Steps must be taken to prevent our troops from entering mincfields being installed and marked,

(3) Nuisance mine fields may or may not ba marked.

~. Minefield Recording, Reporting and Responsibilities•

a, ~~. Division, corps, and army engineers ke~p ll)eoial situ~tion (barrjsr) maps on which all essential information conce~lng friendly and enemy minefields is graphically entered. This infor!Mtlon is used to keep c=anders, unit staffs, and troops in the mined ·~as accurately informed. Division corps and army engineers distributlfovsr-lays.to appropriate scales of 1:100,000 to 1:25,000 of specitll sitQiltion (barrier) maps periodically. It is inportant, therefore, that ne~ installed minefields be recorded and records be forwarded to the proper headquarters immediately. ·

(1) Hinefields are recorded while being installed; tba records and reports are secret. Whenever possible, photographic SUpple• menta to detailed minefield records should be !:lade. ·

{2) Detailed instruction on the r-ceparation of location reports and detailed minefield records are given in chapter :3, FM'·~:3l,

(b) No reports are necessary for these mined areas unless enemy action prevents entire clearance of the mines. In suoh an event, a report of the location and number of unliftcd mines is forwarded through channels. -

(4) Nuisance miMfields,

(a) Only general location reports of nuisance min&fields are prepared. These are oubm~tted to the ccmmander ordering the inatsllation of such fieljs and to auy other agency he directs.

1. An Athletic program is established for the units of this Command as listed below, The program for Division competition starts 23 ~.ay 1952 and extends to 1 September l952,

2, The following games and sports will be played in the Athletic program commencing on the dates indicated:

Division Competition will 'be played. on a basis of an elimination tournament, Rules, regulations, and schedules will be published for each separate game and sport by this Headquarters. hules and regulations will !!,OVer·n all play offs and disputes, forfeitures, or protests, will be referred to the Athletic Officer of Divisicn Special Services for· settlement.,

4, With the exception or So~ing; Track and Field Events1 the basic unit size to enter the Div ieion competition will be that of a Go!i,pany, That is to .say, separate Battalions and R•gl.ments will run their own pl~y o(fa of inter-company competition respectively. For example, one comp~ny will represent a regiment in the Division Championship Softball play offs. The basic re~son for.the above is that entrlea ln any one or all ga~be and sports would be on the sar.e basle for all units concerned, thereby permitting smaller units to compete on a more equitable basis,
