The First Battalion, Fifth Marines was in regimental reserve during the entire month of Au~~st. The command post and companies or the battalion were located in the vicinity or CT 118061. The missions assigned to the battalion during this period were:

( 1) Be prepared to occupy on order any of the seven regimental blocking posi tiona (see overlay - Appendix III) ~g ~~~;~e;~t~~~~a~~ ~~~!~ t~n:~~~~i~: !~~m;oa~~ ~~=~~=d the MLR.

(2) To maintaln and improve the combat efficiency or the battalion, and

( 3) To provide rear area sur-veillance patrols in the regimental area to apprehend unau'lhorized personnel and inspect communicatlon lines.

1. Reference (a) is hereby revoked.

2. PURPOSE

'lhe enemy- has the capabilities or 1ntil trating tile MLR and/or activating hostile partisans in our rear areas, and/or attacking

Whenever possible sectors or resnonsibilitY Will be assigned by S-3 by order and overlay. When the immediate tactical situation does not permit the above, verbal instructions will be is sued by S-3.

Company commanders will adJust limiting points by mutual agreement and insure that one company has definite responsibility tor each key terrain feature and that outposts are tied in across limiting points by sight and sound contact or by contact patrols.

50 OUTPOSTS

(a) Outposts will be established nightly from dusk to dawn by the company commander in his assigned ~ector to cover commanding ground and avenues of approach. The m1ss1on of these outposts Will be to warn the battalion of enemy attack and prevent 1nf'1ltration. Outposts will also wa~ch for u·nident1fied aircraft and reports same immediatelye Where adJacent outposts are out ot visual or voice contact with one another, contact patrols will be established.

7, REPORTS

(a) As soon as outposts have been selected, 6=3 w~ll be notified as to their location and identity, Company comrrlandsrs will immediately eetahlish communications by sound power telephone from their outposts to their CP 1 s.

(b) Outposts will report every halt hour on the hour and halt hour by phone to the internal security sentries in each CP. Any unusual incidents will be reported immediately to S-3.

8, INSPECTIONS

Company commanders will be reeponsible to see that their outposts are inspected twioe nightly, once prior to midnight and once after midnight.

9o INTERNAL SECURITY

In addition to the outnosts, Company commanders (including H&S Company commander) Will establish a minimum ot one two man walking sentry posts tor internal security in their company Bivouac areas. Additional posts will be two man posts,

When the command post is occupied by only H&S Company, H&S Company commander will be responsible for establishing the all-around security or the command post. When the command post is in the vicinity or r-eseL·ve or- other units, local security t'l'ill be tied-in w1 th them. It H&S Company is all in one area, but separated into command post, supply area, etc., local security or above Will be posted for each installation. 'rhe other procedure as outlined above will still apply.

11. LOCAI,. DEFENSE

Outpost sectors will also be local defense aeotors~ When outposts are established, Company commanders Will also prescribe defense positions for their platoons. Platoon and squad leaders Will reconnoiter assigned positions and

These s~e sectors will also be air defense sectors. Defensive posi tiona will be manned. as a dispe:r;sal measure in the event of an attack or air raid warning. Machine gune will be emplaced to deliver AA fire, and all small arms Will engage a!roraf't e.tte.cking the area from low Altitude.

13. It ls realized that no SOP in itself can e:1q>lici tely cover each and every tactical situation in which this command may be. In order to provide a period of indoctrination and instruction tor replacements joining this command in the near future, enclosures (1) and ( 2) are promUlgated tor compliance or the instructors designated. 2. The H&S Commandant will take chArge or the replacement draft during the training period, and will provide for meseing and billeting. He will insure the.t the draft is divided into two (2) approXimately equal groups,deaignated group "A" and grotlp":S1

Ref': (a) CO 5th Mar Msg dtd 020905I July 1952 Enol: (1) Schedule tor Regimental Patrol Schools, periods 04 August through 8 August through 12 August, 1952.

1. In accordance with instructions contained in reference (a), A Regimental Patrolling School is hereby established within , this battalion to instruct certain designated otf'ioers and men ot the 5th Marines. -

2. The mission of the school is to review the established principles of pe.trolling and to emphasize the application ot these principles to the present tactical situation.
