PROUD GRAMMA
Creating, Performing, and Responding
are the primary mediums through which
the Arts are integrated into the general
education classroom.
There are 5 disciplines.
ARTS INTEGRATION
Arts Integration is our school-wide approach to teaching which involves:
• Teaching the Arts Standards FIRST – this gives the class common background knowledge and a common language through which to communicate their understanding in all other subject areas.
• Students will THEN learn the Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies standards. The arts are integrated via:
• Warm-up/review activities
• Metaphors to explain new, complex concepts or ideas
• Practice throughout the lesson
• Assessment (both formal and informal)
• This does not happen every lesson, every moment of every day; only when appropriate
Common Core State Standards
• Are aligned with college and work expectations
• Are clear, understandable and consistent
• Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills
• Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards
• Designed so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society

Math
o A systematic morning procedure for math review and the students will be utilizing a math notebook for CGI problem solving practice.
o Students will typically have a three or four new lessons throughout the week and will be given a weekly check-up of the concepts learned that week.
o A lot of the student’s learning in math comes from correcting and discussing their own work. This allows them to note patterns of errors and areas of difficulties. It is important that the students complete their own homework each evening and bring it back to school the following morning in order to correct and discuss it with the class.

Reading
A Reader is not someone who knows how to read but someone who reads independently, responsively, critically, and because he/she wants to.
o Reading comprehension is the key focus. We will work on reading comprehension skills and strategies throughout every subject area – fiction and non-fiction. We will also do plenty of discussion both partners, small group, and whole group about self-selected literature. Expect your student to also be required to reflect on the literature.
o Vocabulary will be focused in all content areas.
Reading
o We will read novels as a class throughout the year. Some of the novels we read last year were Hatchet, Blood on the River, Can’t You Make Them Behave King George, Chains, Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe, andTuckEverlasting to name a few. We will determine the novels we read each quarter based on the students’ needs.
o Your son or daughter will also be required to read independently at home daily for at least 20 minutes. You can support your student by talking about literature and setting an example that reading is important. Please sign the planner.
o Engage NY ELA units
o Readbox reviews of independent novels/non-fiction books
