Daughters of Penelope A Message from the Grand President

This year passed by way too fast, I can still remember everything from the beginning of the year like it was just yesterday! It has been an exciting and enjoyable year for me and the Daughters of Penelope. The last nine months my travels took me to numerous districts where I witnessed many worthy chapter and district projects that promoted the Daughters of Penelope. Many new people came to my life and I would like to tell them how much they mean to me! Each and every one of you, the Heartbeats of the Daughters of Penelope, made my life richer, and I want to thank you. I stated last July that we are going “Green”. Therefore, to keep with that promise, this last issue of the Grand President’s Bulletin will also be distributed through email to all members and will be posted on our website. Starting with the Annual District Governor’s Conference held in Washington, D.C., my sincere thanks to all the District Governors who attended and all the Grand Lodge and other officers who made presentations. It was an informative day but also gave us the chance to get together and renew or make new friendships. Among other travels, I had the opportunity to attend Founder’s Day hosted by Eos #1 in San Francisco. I continued my travels across the US and Canada attending the outstanding events held by our chapters, in order to donate to their charitable causes. I wish you all continued success with these projects as they help promote our good name throughout the community. I congratulate you all on your support and dedication. My participation in the AHEPA Family excursion to Greece, Cyprus, Jerusalem and Constantinople provided me with an enormous wealth of information, though our meetings with political and religious leaders, our trip to Thessaloniki and tour of the AHEPA Hospital, and Evagelismos Children’s Wing in Athens, both of which carry the Daughters of Penelope name on their plaques, once in a life time experiences, and appreciation of our AHEPA Family. We spent time in Jerusalem during Holy Week, and Easter in Constantinople. We attended Holy Week services including Holy Thursday and preparation of the Holy Mirth, Good Friday and Holy Saturday liturgies. We had an audience with His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Communication this year has been fantastic and I want to thank all the chapter presidents and secretaries who sent me their newsletters, bulletins and announcements each month. The Chapter receiving the Best Communications Award will be announced at the National Convention in Las Vegas. The Penelope Scroll had two very successful issues that the chapters supported with numerous articles, and the e-newsletters kept everyone informed of different activities through the Grand President’s travels. Besides our support of the National Projects, Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc., Penelope House Family Violence Center, UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Penelope’s Place Domestic Family Violence Center, Penelopean Day Care and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, this year we also are donating to the Emergency Relief Fund to Aid Greece. Through our civic responsibility program, we had chapters and chapter members responsible for representatives joining the caucus against domestic violence/violence against women. We have made great strides in the area of communicating and developing relationships with Congress. The newly formed Congressional Children’s Caucus has 25 members. The DOP’s interest in issues pertaining to education and health of children was conveyed to them. STEM Education (Science,Technology, Engineering, and Math) seems to be an initial topic on the minds of the caucus. The caucus is more focused on education and awareness of children’s issues and desires to ensure children have a voice in a non-partisan fashion. Capitol Hill was very successful through Andrew Kaffes’ diligent efforts. I had the opportunity to personally visit with

15

my Congressman Bill Young and provide information about the DOP and our efforts against domestic violence/violence against women. We had Media Coverage of the DOP Statement on Senate Passage of VAWA, Voice of America Greek Service, Greek News, The Greek Star and The National Herald. I urge you to increase and continue your efforts in this area. As you prepare for your district conventions, I wish you harmonious and productive deliberations in the spirit of Sisterhood. Thank you for giving the honor to serve you as your Grand President this year. Thank you all for your hospitality and the courtesies extended to me during my visits, your love, friendship and support. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Annual Supreme Convention in Las Vegas, NV during the week of July 22-27, 2012. Thank you for all you do for the Daughters of Penelope. Nicky Stamoulis, Grand President ~ “You are the Heartbeat of the Daughters of Penelope”

Cleo Rumpakis Liaison

To My Sisters of District #5, In September, I asked you to start to write your Chapter History.

Your District Governor, Karen Marousis, created a guideline of questions

on the Internet to help assemble the information.

My greatest joy will be to have this project completed and placed

in archival institutions throughout your states. The Daughters of

Penelope have a rich and admirable history. Let’s tell others what you

have done. Leave a legacy to those who will follow you.

Daughters of Penelope Annual Report of the District Governor 2011-2012

To the Delegates, Alternates, Visitors and Honored Guests of the Garden Fifth District

Daughters of Penelope, I welcome you to the Annual 5th District AHEPA Family

Convention.

Dear Sisters,

Serving as your District Governor has been a wonderful experience. Like years before

it is always a pleasure to visit with my Sisters of the 5th District. Traveling

throughout New Jersey and Delaware this past year to meet with wonderful Sisters of

District 5 is always a pleasure. Again, you have graciously opened your chapter doors

and welcomed the lodge and myself whether it was a visitation or a special event.

I cannot part without recognizing my Lodge. We had met several times throughout

the year and we kept our lines of communication open in this ever-fast paced world of

technology. Within minutes, we could communicate. No busy signal would keep us

from not communicating. No mail carrier could delivery faster then the world of

email or texting.

I especially want to thank Sisters Eleni and Marcella for always being there these

past few years. We could laugh together, cry together, and even speak silly Greek

together. It has been a privilege and an honor to work side by side with a great two

great Sisters. I am positive that they will fulfill their positions on the lodge with the

same tenacity as they have the last few years.

Sisters Isa and Anna came to us new this past year and quickly learned to pick up

the pace and putting up with me! You have done a great job.

Sister Martina, a wealth of information, but more importantly your demeanor

balanced out my patience, tolerance, or intolerance! I was hoping to have all in place

days before the convention. It is now the 12th hour and I am here at my computer and

sadden as I write my final report that you will not be with us at the convention. Know

that you are in my thoughts and prayers on the passing of your mother. May her

memory be eternal.

17

To all the Sisters of the 5th District I thank you for all your hard work and support.

As we lose Sisters along the way for whatever reasons, we are always able to help one

another get back on our feet. It was this year that one of our chapters has had a rebirth.

I wish our Sisters of Cadmus # 163 continued success. Again, to my entire 5th

District Sisters you are a group of dynamic and talented women whose acts of

kindness and unfaltering devotion are the “Heartbeat of the Daughters of Penelope”.

To my Committee Chairs, your energy, intelligence, talent and commitment is

fantastic. I only had to beg once. Dina Fanikos, I believe you will have a permanent

Annual Report of the District Marshall 2011-2012

Dear Sisters,

It was a pleasure to be your District Marshall this year. This experience allowed me to

make new friendships and be more involved in my commitment as a Daughter of

Penelope.

I am very proud of my liaison chapters, Icarius #48, Jersey City, Agape #336, Wyckoff,

and Kronos #188, Clifton. It has been a pleasure to visit with you as your liaison. The

presidents of each of these chapters are very dynamic and are true examples of the ideals

of the Daughters of Penelope. Congratulations to each one of you on having such a

successful year! It was truly an honor to be a part of the Lodge visitations. May you

always have continued success.

To my sisters on the Lodge: your love and commitment to this great organization is

inspiring. I will savor fond memories of all my experiences on the lodge this year.

It was an honor to serve under our District Governor, Karen Marousis. Her creative ideas

made our Spring Luncheons fun and her drive and determination to increase our

membership and her enthusiasm are unmatched. Outstanding job!!

Anna Zavros, District Marshall
