Your MAGS Board - A Winning Team

MAGS welcomes our new President, Al Werking, and welcomes back our Board Members! Al inherits awinning team with this Board, a team which made my four years as MAGS President especially rewarding.

Dot Reed, FirstVice President and Membership Chair, worked tirelessly to maintain a steady membership. She has been assisted by Susannah Brooks, Stumped Roots Chair, who also indexed and put in book formseveral years' issues of Der Kurier..

Betty deKeyser, former Second Vice President and Programs Chair (now Member-at-Large), effectivelyplanned and organized the programs for our fall and spring meetings in a timely fashion, which facilitated theeffective publicity work of our Corresponding Secretary, MarilynneOcando assisted by Member-at-Large JoBoroff. Deyerle Atkins, our Recording Secretary, didn't miss a beat while recording minutes at Board Meetings andthe General Meetings. .Merl Arp, DerKurier Editor, put the newsletter together and coordinated with Dot Reedto ensure its timely delivery. Carl Shrader, Administrator of the Lending Library, and John Humphrey, pastMember-at-Large and now Second Vice President, have been "can do" achievers on tasks beyond their normalduties. PENN'S WOODS REVISITED -

The MAGS Fall Meeting at Trappe

A full day in an historical setting made alovely backdrop for the MAGS 1999 Fall Meeting atTrappe, Pennsylvania, on October 23. Three know-ledgeable speakers gave informative talks on thePennsylvania State Archives, Germans in BucksCounty, and Mennonite relations with otherchurches.

In a slide presentation, Jonathan Stayer, aPenn State Archives employee, reviewed the manyresources the Archives has to offer. These records

are available for research in the Archives Search

Room, 3rd and Forster, in Harrisburg, PA. Stayersuggested Robert M. Dructor's Guide to Genealogical Sources at the Pennsylvania State Archives(1968) as a detailed outline of Archives' holdings. Ina second lecture, Stayer reviewed the publishedPennsylvania Archives, warning researchers to digfurther than this valuable source because of

omissions and errors; in that multi-volume work.

Frances Waite, library assistant for theSpruance Library of Bucks County, gave an overview of German immigration into Pennsylvania andespecially to Bucks County. Waite said that by1775 to 1778 about two-thirds of Upper BucksCounty inhabitants had German or Swiss heritage.Next, Dr. John Ruth gave entertaining andinformative perspectives on Mennonite settlement inthe region. Waite's and Ruth's presentations greatlyhelped attendees understand the historical area theywere visiting.

Nearby sites were specially opened forMAGS attendees, including the historic Old TrappeChurch built in 1743. Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg, patriarch of the Evangelical Lutheran Church inAmerica, founded this church after immigrating in1742 from Germany. Those attending were alsoable to tour Muhlenberg's house and the historicDewees Tavern. Some attendees whose roots goback to Trappe said that in all their years ofresearching they had never been able to enter theMuhlenberg house or the Old Trappe Church, so thisMAGS program was a special treat.

Our thanks go to many for the MAGS FallMeeting: to Betty deKeyser and John Humphrey, program arrangers, and Susannah Brooks, forarranging entry into these historic sites; to PastorHerbert Michel of the Augustus Lutheran Church, toDr. John Shetler, and Dr. Ivan Hess, for their tours ofthe Trappe Church, Dewees Tavern, and Muhlenberghouse respectively.

We owe special thanks to Joan Sheviak,MAGS Registrar, and Marilynne Ocando, Corresponding Secretary for making available the manyhandouts which provided information on the historicalsites of the area. Vendor Jane Adams Clarke of the

Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania added freehandouts on research in the area. The brief business

meeting included installation of officers of the newMAGS board. The day was topped off with ssumptuous lunch and a dozen door prizes.

An Overlooked Source: German-born Account Holders in the Freedman's Saving andTrust Company

Compiled by Susannah E. Brooks

Asgenealogists wehave a tendency to categorize recordsbytimeperiod, recordsource, orethnicgroup. In many casesthisnarrows our searchandhelps to pinpoint the recordsweneedto find specificinformation about our ancestors. In other cases it causes us to overlook valuable sources ofinformation, because the records do not fit into our parameters. A case in point is the records of the Freedman'sSaving andTrust Company, especially the signature cards."Amongthe most underused bodiesoffederalrecords useful for AfricanAmericangenealogicalresearch are the records ofthe Freedman's SavingandTrust Company."1 Theserecords are almost entirely overlooked by those doing Europeanimmigrantresearch. Immigrants, who were born in Germany or other German-speaking parts ofEurope, openedmore that four hundred accounts.

The Freedman's Bank was established in 1865 by a group ofphilanthropists and investors andchartered by Congress as a place for Black soldiers to save their bounty payments, pay, and bonuses.Because many slaves had been denied the right to learn to read and write, a signature was often uselessas a means of identification. Therefore, the bank required a great deal ofinformation about the person(age, complexion, birthplace, where raised, residence, parents' names, names of spouse and children, siblings names, etc.). When the branches required that the "cards" be completely filled out (not allbranches did), the result is a mini-genealogy ofthe family. The Bank became the bank for the military ina few cities and the soldiers were the first European immigrants to open accounts. Ofthe signature cardsthat survive, various branches had varying numbers ofGermans opening accounts (from 4 in Shreveport,Louisiana to approximately 240 in New York). The New York Branch passbooks included informationabout bank rules, etc. in English, German, and French, so it is obvious that this branch intended to attractimmigrantdepositors. The New York Branch signature cards are the most complete, asking, in additionto the required questions, "how long have you been in the US; age and location ofparents, siblings, andgrown children; name ofhusbands ofmarried sisters or daughters, and amount of initialdeposit." Forthe researcher lucky enough to have an ancestor (or one of his/her immediate family members) whoopened an account in the nine years the bank existed (1865 -1874), this may be the place to find the hintsneeded to determine birthplace, date ofimmigration, or locationofa sibling who vanished. The weaknessofthese records is the information was dictated to a bank employee, who had little knowledge ofGermannames or geography. Like other records ofthis era the spellingis creative at best. Often the records areincomplete (Baltimore branch records are consistentlyincomplete

As space permitscopiesofinformationfrom individual signaturecards ofpersons born inGermanywillbe printedin Der Kurier. "Germany" will include the various German states, Alsace in France, Switzerland, Poland,Bohemia, and Austria. The compiler has attempted to copy the records exactly at they were written on the signaturecards. At a later date other records, such as letters and questionnaires completed by a few German-born accountholders, will be included in articles in Der Kurier. (continued next page)

Nemesis At Potsdam: The Expulsion of

the Germans from the Eastby

Alfred M DeZayas.

Revised edition available from Picton Press, P.O. Box 250,Rockport, ME 04856. Soft-cover, 6"x 9", 270 pages,photographs, maps, illustrations, complete index $23.95postpaid.

Ethnic cleansing is not a term or process new to thelate twentieth-century - in central and eastern Europeit has been going on for centuries. America and theworld have taken note of the purging in Serbia in thisdecade, but the West knows little of the cleansing thattook place in eastern Germany, Poland andCzechoslovakia at the end of World War II. Russian

and eastern European troops, with full knowledge ofthe American and British governments, expelledfifteen million German-speaking men, women andchildren from east and central Europe. Two million ofthe fifteen million German civilians died during theexpulsion.

Alfred M. DeZayas in his book Nemesis at Potsdamchronicles the details of the horror and the American

complicity. He discusses the genesis of the Oder-Neisse Line which fixed Germany's eastern border.Zayas goes on to note the transfer was not as "orderlyand humane" as had been decreed in the Potsdam

Accord. In 1945 the Times reported that Berlinhospitals "made the sights of the concentration campsappear normal.''

For Americans whose German roots are in the east, this book is a must if somewhat disturbing read.

This three-volume publication is the first state-widecommunity service project compiled by the AMHNYS,an attempt to inventory all the cemetery sites in theentire state. This work includes name of cemetery, location, dates of first and last burial, type of cemetery(private, religious, military, etc.), whether active orinactive or deserted, and name of contact person. Some entries note number of grave-sites, Rev. Warburials, etc.

The data is organized alphabetically by county, bytowns and cities within each county, and by cemeterysite within the smaller jurisdiction. The Table of Contents shows in which counties the cemeteries of the

five boroughs of NYC are listed. Volume I includesthe counties of Albany through Livingston; Vol. IIMadison through Schuyler; and Vol. Ill Seneca throughYates.

A researcher will likely need all three volumes in orderto access the data, since the Table of Contents is inVol. I and the Index is in Vol. III. The coverage isexcellent for some localities, but absent or uneven forothers. Some locations were listed but noted as not

participating. Other localities were neither listed nornoted why they were missing. For example, the City ofBinghamton has several cemeteries but city or itsburial sites are not mentioned. Appendix B of VolumeIII includes An Inventory Addendum Request Form )so that additions and corrections may be made to theoriginal inventory.

A word of caution about using the Index. It is comprehensive but it has a glitch. Be sure to look up yourentry twice in the Index, once in the uppercase list andnext in the lowercase list which follows. This was

apparently a data entry incompatibility, which hopefullywill be corrected in subsequent editions.

This work is a major accomplishment. Undoubtedly, more data has been collected than was summarized inthis initial offering. I hope funding and interest in thisproject will continue to produce valuable material forall researchers.

History of Augusta County, Virginia

byJ. Lewis Peyton.

Originally published in 1882 by Samuel M. Yost & Son,Staunton, VA. Reprinted in 1986 by Heritage Books, Inc.,1540E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD 20716; 1-800-398-7709. Soft cover, 387 pages plus index, Item #P197. $31.00plus $5 shipping.

Augusta County in Virginia was established in 1738.Originally, it covered a vast area referred to as the"utmost limits of Virginia," which meant its westernboundary was the Mississippi River. The heart of theCounty was the Shenandoah Valley, which was firstexplored by Alexander Spotswood, who served asGovernor of Virginia from 1710 to 1723. In 1716,Spotswood lead a party called the "Knights of theGolden Horseshoe" over the Blue Ridge into theShenandoah. From their accounts, settlers east of theBlue Ridge began to take note about "this lovely andfruitful Valley," and were soon attracted to settle in it.In 1732, sixteen families from Pennsylvania settlednear today's Winchester. That year, Jost Hite andothers settled on a 40,000-acre piece of land in theValley. Unfortunately for German researchers, JostHite is given less attention in the eariy narrativeconcerning Augusta County than are other eariyinhabitants - especially those of British ancestry. Theauthor especially covers the history of John Lewis, whose French Huguenot family settled in Ireland priorto immigrating to America. He details informationabout the Koiner family, originally from Wurtenburg, and the Hanger family from Germany, but mostfamilies he discusses are of British and Irish origin, includingTates, Baldwins, Bells, Cochrans, Crawfords,Prestons, and others.

The value of this book to German researchers is not in

family history. Instead, it provides a frame-work forunderstanding the early history of the ShenandoahValley where Germans settled in significant numbers.

MEMOIR AND OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF

GEN. JOHN STARK: Also a Biography of Capt.

Gen. John Stark begins with the memoirs of JohnStark, who was bom in New Hampshire on August 28,1728. He was the son of Archibald and Eleanor(Nichols) StarkofScotland. An addition to his memoirsnotes that Stark married Elizabeth Page, who was tenyears his junior. Stark lists children bom to him andElizabeth, and the author of the book, Caleb Stark, followsthis list with this comment: "The Stark family issupposed to have originated in Germany."

Stark relates his capture by Indians in 1752, hisrunning the gauntlet, and his life among Indians. Hefurther details his activities in the French and Indian

Wars where he fought with Captain Rogers, and hisactivities in the American Revolution. His memoir is

followed by correspondence between him and suchnotables as George Washington, Ethan Allen, HoratioGates, John Hancock, and Thomas Mifflin. The correspondence, in turn, is followed with a biography of JohnStark's son, Major Caleb Stark (1759-1838), CaptainRobert Rogers of New Hampshire, and CaptainPhinehas Stevens.

This book focuses on early New Hampshire history, sothe German researcher looking for ancestors in theMid-Atlantic states will find little help here. However, those wanting to learn more about the history of theFrench and Indian Wars and the Revolutionary Warwill find this book most interesting.
