The Race - What’s Happening?

• Running from Saturday July 7th to Sunday July 29th 2018, the 105th Tour de France includes 21 stages

• These stages cover a total distance of 3,329 kilometers (a little more than the driving distance between New York and Albuquerque, NM).

• 22 teams, 176 riders, Many MILLIONS of Spectators (10-12 million at the roadside on 2016)

• Rider’s telemetry and big data (from 2015…). For instance - Total calories spent: 23,940,000 or 85,807 hamburgers….

• Much more than just bicycles…

– GPS/Telemetry data: Comes from trackers on the cycles - contains the timestamp, latitude, longitude and the speed of the rider.

– Race data: Provided at beginning of race

– Timing data: Data from official timing provider regarding results, photo finish etc.

– Environmental data: From third party sources, uses ordnance data as well hyper-localized weather data.

– Social Media data: from handles like @letour and @letourdata

– Media: Photos, videos and other data

– And a lot of crazy fans doing crazy fan stuff…

The Race, the Hub Where the Future Meets the Future…

• Drones– Already utilized in coverage of massive sport events

– Getting better, steadier, longer-lived, faster

• 5G Slices – eMBB for video

– uRLLC for controls

– mMTC/eMBB for telemetry

– E2E slice management

• More and more telemetry and big data– Geolocation (location, speed, cadence, acceleration, power)

– Weather and environment

– Biotelemetry (wearables, ingestible, implantables, injectables)

• Analytics and ML– For network self-healing

– For consumer data

– For medical surveillance and anti-doping control

Catalyst Drivers

Drivers

• INCREASE THE VOLUME AND CHOICE OF CONTENT AVAILABLE TO VIEWERS

• LOW COST OF DEPLOYMENT AND OPERATION

• NEW REVENUE STREAMS

• IMPROVE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

• GET IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE OF SPORTING EVENT

• ENSURE SAFETY AND SECURITY

Details

• Tour De France is a very popular event worldwide and viewers want to be able to watch any part of the race live depending on their inclination e.g watch a team they follow. Also there is a market for recorded content for different aspects of the race.

• Every Tour De France location is different. Operators don't want to invest a huge amount in infrastructure that is useful only for one event. It is imperative that the infrastructure is dynamic and operations are automated.

• Traditional revenue streams are dwindling with commoditisation. New revenue streams have to be found to sustain the business.

• Customers now demand superb customer experience - be it innovative products and services, ease of use, flexibility of use, excellent performance at the right price point. Online and real time experiences are now table stakes.

• Sport viewers are not content with just passively watching the event. They want to experience being in the event. This could include watching the event with friends and family online, or getting real-time data about their favourite participating sports person including hear rate, speed, listen to conversations on the field or even experience the race from the perspective of the riders using VR.

• Safety and security of the people on the field as well as data is really important.

• Thursday, 26 July 2018 – At 172 kilometers, the 18th stage of the Tour de France runs from Trie-sur-Baïse to Pau.

• Relatively flat stage, will serve as an opportunity for sprinters to catch up

• A 5G operator provides (and assures) multiple slices

– eMBB slice for 4K drone video

– uRLLC slice for drone control

– eMBB slice for video and data (DL/UL) for roadside users and sport portal fans

– eMBB slice for rider’s telemetry

• Different SLAs are established between different parties, for different slices:

– 5G operator – Drone operator (coverage, latency)

– 5G operator – Broadcasting company (video quality, event coverage)

– 5G operator – Sorts Portal Provider (availability, quality)

– 5G Operator – Sport Organization/Sport Teams (latency, availability)

Use Case 1 – Drones based broadcast: additional drones

Flow: New drone is raised into the air to cover the accident => slice loaded => threshold crossed => policy applied => slice parameters changed (#supported UEs) => new drone is put back into standby state => slice scaled back (#supported UEs)

Use Case 2 – Drones based broadcast: restricted flight zone

Flow: Drones get near the restricted flight zone around Pau’s airport => as they evade this zone they get into an area of bad or no 5G coverage => Proactive policy is applied to move some drones to 4G => as the drones circumvent the restricted flight zone, they get back to full 5G coverage

Use Case 3 – Graphical description – Roadside Users

A Local Rider is leading the stage and is in a VERY good position to win the event. Road-side users density is massively increasing on the route, especially towards the finish line.Steps Taken:=> slice becomes heavily loaded => Broadcasted Video Quality degraded => Subscriber Mobile Broadband Service Impacting and RCA => MEC Application is overloaded => Policy is applied to Increase Max allowed UE on the slice and Scale MEC application and ensure Subscribers are well served

An OTT application using Team’s Telemetry network Slice and providing Race Analytics gets flooded having an impact on on telemetry measurements reliability and generating Radio Access Bearer errors on the 5G NR Cells => Policy is applied to recommend OTT application scaling

• The catalyst proposes and explores new services and innovation areas, creating new engaging end-customer services and experiences, also considering the multi-provider within B2B Business model.

• The catalyst proposes and explores slicing concepts and mechanisms, covering practically all the 5G requirements, enabling the network service provider to dynamically balance capacity and resource allocation according to real-time dynamically changing loads onto the range of slices. This can be used as a tool to support Operations team to effectively manage QoE and the offered service levels. Such alignment of expectations is key to well-managed customer experience.

• The insights into operational aspect around Service Orchestrator and Service Assurance with closed control loop is a key enabler for 5G.

• Key takeaways and main finding generated by this Catalyst could be used as input to standardization work
