“They’re watching us, they're always watching us.” The simple fact that he didn’t like being watched is what set Michael apart from everyone else. Michael didn’t want to be different but he couldn't help it; it was just the way he was - different. The city Michael lives in is a very unusual one by most anyone's standards. Michael and his whole city are lizard human hybrids, so as the reader can imagine, the city looks very different from the real world. Plus, there's a wall -- or actually a building -- surrounding the city. As the number of cameras on the city begins to dwindle, Michael starts to look for answers about the cameras, about how he and the city got there, and about what's beyond the wall. But when the library and his schoolteachers have no answers for him, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Michael needs answers and he is willing to go an incredible distance or face many problems to get them. Problems and obstacles repeatedly test his determination as he searches through the watchers’ base to find his answers. When Michael finds out some rather unsettling info, he immediately heads back home to warn the city. Though he speaks the truth and has all good intentions, the people don’t believe him; he can't convince anyone of what he has learned. Eventually, he’s forced to go to the city council and request an evacuation of the city to save everyone's lives.
